When peeling onions, molecules of volatile sulfur, which are contained in the cells of the plant, enter the air. And our body tries to protect the eyes from this substance, washing it off with tears.
Accordingly, in order not to cry when peeling onions, it is necessary to prevent sulfur vapors from getting to the eyes.
Let's take a look at a few ways to get rid of tears when you need to chop onions.
Put on your swimming goggles. They are equipped with elastic bands that fit tightly to the skin around the eyes, therefore, they will create a physical barrier between the sulfur vapor and the eyes.
Another mechanical method for removing sulfur vapors. Place the fan near a cutting board, preferably in front of your face. And the harmful sulfur simply cannot reach the eyes.
It is an excellent neutralizer. Chew the parsley as you cut the onions. The sulfur vapor will oxidize and there will be no tears.
Oxidation of sulfur vapors can also be achieved using a flame (for example, a candle). Place a flame source next to a cutting board.

Place the onion in the refrigerator to cool before slicing or peeling. This will reduce the release of harmful substances, which means it will reduce the number of tears.
When peeling or cutting onions, moisten the onion with cold water as often as possible. And don't forget to moisten the knife, because it also has flying sulfur on it.
Or you can put the peeled onion in cold water for 15-20 minutes. The sulfur will be released into the water and dissolve in it. Then, when cutting into the air, there will be “nothing” to stand out.
Put chewing gum in your mouth. Chew it when peeling and slicing onions. One condition: at this time you need to breathe through your mouth, not your nose. Believe me, there will be no tears!
This is an old and time-tested method. As soon as you are about to peel the onion, fill your mouth with water. Keep it in your mouth until you feel a burning sensation. Spit it out and re-fill your mouth with water. Usually, to cut 1 or 2 onions, it is enough to put water in your mouth once.
Rub a chopping board and knife with a lemon wedge and chop the onion. Lemon also neutralizes sulfur fumes.
