So to spoil your life – this talent is needed! A story about a childhood friend

I am simply indignant. I have not been with my parents for almost a year and a half. I live 1,500 kilometers away. Came on vacation. I brought some gifts. When I got out of the car, a childhood friend was walking along the sidewalk. I confess that I didn't even recognize her right away – she had changed a lot. The skin is pale, sunken, bags under the eyes … Then I thought that she was ill. Well, anything can happen.

Alcoholic

A friend gave me an alcohol calendar for my birthday. It's like a regular calendar, only in it you need to mark the days when you drank alcohol. In the last 50 days, I have not drunk for only 4 days. And so every evening I drink a glass of dry or a glass of something over forty degrees.

Found solace in a bottle after a divorce

Good morning, afternoon or evening! I will not introduce myself. Perhaps there are other women who have found themselves in a similar life situation.

I lived with my husband for 19 years and 11 months. A month before the anniversary, he left me. The daughters already have their own families, they live separately. At 42, she became a divorcee. It seemed to me that if you have lived with a person for half your life, then this is something, yes it means … It turned out that nothing means a damn thing. And it was not even the fact that my husband left to someone else's place that knocked me down … He left me. He did not have a mistress, and even now he does not meet with anyone – he lives alone.

The revelation of an alcoholic

"Life passed by itself": the story of a woman who quit drinking after 14 years of addiction. Tag: Female alcoholism

I began to drink from stress and a good life. I never counted money. And I started drinking … Damn, I don't even remember when I started drinking. Sometimes it seems to me that I have always taken a drop on my chest. For the last two years I have been drinking a bottle of semi-sweet or sweet.

How to Stop Drinking: A Quick Guide for Women

How to Stop Drinking: A Quick Guide for Women

My name is Julia, I am 34 years old, I am an alcoholic with 14 years of experience. Former alcoholic. 4 years ago I quit drinking.
I wrote this text to share my experience of sobriety. I want women (and men too) to stop being ashamed of their problem and realize that there is a way out. To stop being an alcoholic it is necessary: to change the lifestyle (environment, conditions, habits) and the way of thinking (not to think badly about yourself, not to cheat yourself, not to dwell on the past, to think constructively and positively) + just not to drink: hour after hour, day by day, year by year"Life passed by itself": the story of a woman who quit drinking after 14 years of addiction. Tag: Female alcoholism
Quitting doing something habitual is stressful, just like starting to do something new. In my life I gave up and started a lot of things, and today, when changes have become a habit, I can say that they no longer cause such wild resistance as it happened before. It is clear that few people want to leave the comfort zone once again, but there is nothing you can do about it – if you want to swim, you will have to get up from the lounger and enter the cold water. Moreover, you still have to change – this is life and change is inevitable. Quitting drinking and starting to live soberly is like moving (for someone to another planet). Unusual, scary, everything is not so, everything is different. If earlier the reaction to problems was “to drink”, now this is not and you just have to live the moment as it is. No additives, no additives, no spices. Only pure taste. nostalgia for days gone by, all-inclusive vacations, troubles at work, an incredibly lonely rainy Friday evening, a sauna trip, New Years, birthdays, lunch with colleagues, etc. alcohol-free. Always on a sober head and with empty hands (without a glass). In fact, this is normal, and it should be. Objectively, alcohol does so much harm to people that it is vulgar to talk about the culture of drinking.
So.
You guess you can't control your drinking. You can see how negatively it affects the quality of your life. Your loved ones regularly tell you that they don't like it when you drink. You have a hangover in the morning. You have promised yourself more than once to abstain or drink less, but. A week passes and you drink again. Yes, you are an alcoholic. This is absolutely certain, just accept it. And if you don't stop drinking, it will only get worse. It won't get any better. You will never learn to drink. Don't be fooled. This is an extremely important point.

Further.
Alcohol gives you nothing but temporary relaxation and escape from reality. Alcohol is a great deceiver. For some time. But in fact, it doesn't change anything. Your life is only getting worse. Alcohol does not strengthen friendships. Doesn't make sex more enjoyable. Doesn't fight stress, doesn't make life easier, doesn't solve problems. These are illusions. Alcohol gives you the temporary illusion of relaxation, fun, creativity, etc., but it takes away much more. Health. Willpower. I believe in myself. Ability to rejoice and enjoy life Ability to think critically and productively (according to the prominent Russian psychiatrist and academician V.M. Bekhterev, even small doses of alcohol weaken mental abilities). The ability to control your actions. I'm not talking about the real danger to the life of the alcohol itself or the consequences of its exposure – here everything is clear anyway.
Now let's talk about everything in order.
So you've decided to live soberly. Now what?

Relax. You may be hungry for a drink. Perhaps this will happen quite often. In moments that are consonant with the ones in which you drank before, you will want to be stronger, so it is better to insure yourself, at least for the first time, while you are still vulnerable and have not grown a new (sober!) Behavioral model. Now you are considered naked, unprotected, as if without skin. Therefore, take care of yourself, live carefully. After all, life is all we have. It's infinitely sorry to waste it or even lose it.
What helped me personally:
1 The irrevocable confession of being an alcoholic
You don't drink because you are an alcoholic. Don't be ashamed of it, shame and guilt are a big hindrance. Your sobriety is your personal responsibility. No one is to blame if you drink. And it doesn't “happen”. Nothing happens by itself. You are the one who gets drunk. Then you drain the responsibility. Take the steering wheel in your hands and hold it tight. This is just your life. Do not back down and everything will go well.

2 Support for loved ones
My husband supported and praised me very much, rejoicing with me every sober month, reinforcing the motivation for sobriety. He and my parents gave up alcohol altogether to support me. It helped a lot, I can't even imagine how our communication would develop if they drank. Before that, there was a different story. When at the age of 25 I was coded, my parents and I went to St. Petersburg – they decided to give me such a gift. Dad's cousin lives in St. Petersburg with her husband, and literally every evening at dinner and after they drank. Dad also drank beer during the day, because he was on vacation. You have no idea how pissed me off! I didn’t sit at the table with them and even refused to ride the waterbus because my dad took the beer. Drinking people were physically unpleasant to me. But after that I lost my temper. Therefore, if someone you know is coded or throws himself,

3 Life without stress
Of course, this is not possible. But. When you quit, your nerves are already at the limit. Therefore, take care of your nerves, protect yourself from knowingly stressful situations, simply because it is harmful for you – in a state of stress it is easy to break loose. Often the alcoholic himself escalates the situation and provokes quarrels in order to have a reason to break loose. Track such moments. A fight is just a fight – it happens, as do failures and bad days. It will pass. This is not a reason to take offense. Over time, the habit of living on an emotional swing will pass and you will realize: living soberly is normal. Whatever society imposes on us.

4 Vegetarianism
Helped to revise life values, revise the dietary system, become more conscious and healthy. When you eat healthy foods, drinking unhealthy liquids is kind of strange.

5 Sports
Helped to become healthier, lose weight, strengthen muscles and willpower. Exercising every morning lifts my spirits and gives me a positive attitude for the whole day. I do not go to the gym, I study at home with music. I am pleased with my reflection in the mirror, so sport is very, very conducive to the growth of self-confidence. And the main thing in sports is regularity. It is not necessary to perform sports feats every day, even a few simple squats will give a positive charge and a reason to tick the box: the day was not in vain, I strengthened my health and a good habit.

6 Positive outlook on life
In my drunken years, I looked at life negatively, in any situation my brain first of all found a sad outcome. I saw bad things in people, I didn’t trust them (myself, however, too), I was afraid to change anything (what if everything would be even worse?), I was afraid to seem stupid, I was afraid that people would reject me, they would laugh at me, they would despise me, etc. Therefore, she preferred not to protrude once again. To take a break from the negativity, I got drunk and the world really seemed more rosy to me. It’s a pity, it didn’t last long, because I quickly got drunk to the point of bestiality. I woke up and everything became doubly bad – a vicious circle.
I worked a lot with my thinking (and I continue to do this) and now the world has ceased to make such a depressing impression on me. Yes, sometimes you have to shift the focus of attention from minus to plus by an effort of will, but the result is definitely there) I believe in myself, I like my life, and, it seems to me, everything is fine with me.)

7 Taking care of yourself
On the physical plane, it is healthy food, sleep, sports. With the disappearance of alcohol, I began to consciously cultivate in myself feminine qualities that I had not felt before – indulge in all sorts of feminine pleasures such as manicure, outfits and scrubs. These are my needs, this is important, because I feel good with them. For those who think that they have no money for this – just count how much you spend on alcohol "Life passed by itself": the story of a woman who quit drinking after 14 years of addiction. Tag: Female alcoholism
On the mental: elimination from life of toxic people who suck energy and give nothing in return. You need to communicate either pleasantly or not at all. I respect myself and if someone wants to pour out negative, I just leave – let it pour without me.)

8 How to replace alcohol?
Nothing. Alcohol is a drug; there is no need to replace it with anything. Just get off it, and things will come into your life that you really want to do that will bring you pleasure.
In my case, these are: family, cooking, reading, cinema, English, sports, personal care, personal growth, meditation, my Sober Blog. It makes me happy, it makes up my life.
9 Forming a sober program
I did everything intuitively, based on the 12 steps of A.A.. Slowly, step by step, she erected a new sober reality in place of the destroyed drunken world. My teetotal convictions were strengthened by reading (Russian forum of mutual help for people suffering from alcohol addiction, articles and books: Gennady Shichko, Oleg Stetsenko, Fedor Uglov), conversations with a like-minded person (husband) and keeping a diary (a diary helps to see how much you have done and how progress, even if at times it seems that nothing is happening).

ps
What if your loved one is sick with alcoholism?
1 Do not solve problems for him, otherwise he will never understand that he has them at all.
2 Do not drink with him or keep alcohol at home.
3 Do not scold him for drunkenness (this makes you want to drink even more), but praise him for sobriety and other good deeds.)
4 Alcoholism is a consequence, find the reason why he drinks and treat. Means better than psychotherapy are unknown to me.

pps You
can always stay sober, even when it's scary, lonely and painful. And, believe me, sobriety is wonderful. Let me make a comparison: now the drunken years seem to me like a dirty swampy pond where all the villagers dumped their waste. And today's life is a cool and clean mountain lake.

How to Stop Drinking: A Quick Guide for Women

well, great! I am very glad of your sobriety, and the topic, of course, will be useful to those wishing to live soberly.
I do not have too many components of your sobriety, so for those reading who will be confused by the lack of support from loved ones – do not be embarrassed! this is great, but if this is not the case, then you can also sober up!))

About alcoholic traditions

My mother is the daughter of an alcoholic, her father died at the age of 40 from a heart attack. All I know about my grandfather is that he drank and raised aquarium fish. Mom never told me anything – neither about her childhood, nor about her first husband. I think she has a lot of unspoken pain in her soul. I don’t ask: in our family it is not customary to get into each other’s soul. We suffer in silence, like partisans, with an expression of love, by the way, about the same story.

I have never seen my mother drunk, which I cannot say about my father. Mom drank like everyone else – on holidays. Grandmothers also drank, preferring strong drinks. I remember these family holidays: kind, cheerful adults, gifts, delicious table, good mood and bottles. Of course, no one would have thought that I would grow up and become an alcoholic. I saw that all adults drink, and I knew that when I grow up, I will too, because drinking on a holiday is as natural as eating a goose or a cake.

Early, when I was six, I tried beer (my parents gave me a sip), and at the age of thirteen or fourteen, at the festive table, I was already gradually poured champagne. In high school, I learned what vodka is.

I hardly remember my wedding: when my parents left, I began to drink vodka with friends – and that's it, further failure

My boyfriend introduced me to vodka – we started dating in the 10th grade. I didn't really like him, but everyone thought he was cool. After a couple of months, we drank a bottle of vodka together every day. After school, they bought a bottle, drank it at the guy's house and had sex. Then I went to my house and sat down to do my homework. My parents never suspected me of anything. I quickly developed a tolerance for alcohol – it was bad only the first couple of times. This is a wake-up call: if you feel normal after a lot of alcohol, then your body has adjusted.

How an alcoholic thinks

After school, I entered the Faculty of Journalism. In the second year she got married and transferred to correspondence course: I was too lazy to go to college. She got married just to leave her parents. No, I remember being deeply in love, but I also remember my own thoughts before the wedding. I smoke in the yard and think: maybe, well, why am I doing this? But there is nowhere to go – the banquet is appointed. Okay, I think I'll go, and if anything, I'll get a divorce! I hardly remember that wedding: when my parents left, I began to drink vodka with my friends – and that's it, further failure. Memory blackouts, by the way, are also a bad call.

The future husband at that time lived in the editorial office of the newspaper in which he worked. My parents rented an apartment for us, and we began to live together.

I have always considered myself ugly and unworthy of love and respect. Perhaps for this reason all my men were either drinkers or drug addicts, or both together. One day my husband brought heroin, and we got hooked. Gradually, everything that could be sold was sold. There was often no food at home, but there was almost always heroin, cheap vodka or port.

One day my mother and I went to buy me clothes. July, heat, I'm in a T-shirt. Mom noticed the injection marks on her arm and asks: “Are you injecting?” “Mosquitoes have bitten,” I answer. And mom believes.

Typical alcoholic logic: he never takes responsibility for what happens to him

I remember in detail one day from that period. A couple of my classmates came to us. In the midst of a booze, we go to a cafe, where we run out of money, and a classmate leaves a gold ring as a pledge. We go outside to catch a taxi. Here a police car slows down in front of us. We are drunk, my husband has an open bottle of champagne in his hands. They want to take the guys to the police station, and I, so brave, declare that I have acquaintances in the traffic police. I go around the car to write down the number, winter, slippery – I fall, I look at my leg and realize that it is somehow strangely twisted. In a second, hellish pain. The cops immediately turned around and left, and I ended up in the hospital. At nine months with two shin fractures.

One break turned out to be difficult. I underwent two operations, they put on the Ilizarov apparatus. At the same time, I continued to drink, even while lying in the hospital – my husband brought port wine. Once she got drunk while in a cast, fell down and pierced her lower lip with her tooth. But in my head there was no cause-and-effect relationship between what happened to me and alcohol. I thought that it happened by chance, that I was just unlucky, because anyone can fall, and indeed “the cops are to blame for everything.” Typical logic of an alcoholic: he never takes responsibility for what happens to him.

About blackouts

We divorced my first husband a couple of years after the wedding. I fell in love with his friend. Then another one and another …

When I was twenty-two, an acquaintance of my father called me to write scripts for a youth series. It was pleasant work in all respects: I wrote at most a week a month, and the rest of the time I walked and drank. That same year, my grandmother died, leaving me her apartment, in which I made a real hangout. In a relatively sober state, fear and anxiety were the main feelings of those years. It’s scary when you don’t remember what happened to you yesterday. Just once – and consciousness wakes up. You can find your body anywhere – in a friend's apartment, in a hotel room, on bare ground outside the city, or on a park bench. At the same time, you have only a distant idea of how you got here, and you have no idea what you did and what the consequences will be. You're just scared and dark. Why is it dark? Is it still morning or is it already evening? What day is today? Did your parents see you? You start checking your phone, but there is no phone – apparently, you have lost it again. Trying to complete a puzzle. Does not work.

On trying to quit drinking

I was hostile when someone hinted to me about my alcohol problems. At the same time, I considered myself so terrible that when they laughed in the street, I looked around, confident that they were laughing at me, and if they said a compliment, I snapped back – they probably scoffed or wanted to borrow money.

There was a time when I thought about committing suicide, but after making a couple of demonstrative attempts, I realized that I didn't have enough gunpowder for real suicide. I considered the world to be a disgusting place, and myself the most unfortunate person on earth, it is not clear why I ended up here. Alcohol helped me to survive, with it I at least occasionally felt some semblance of peace and joy, but it also brought more and more problems. All this resembled a foundation pit, into which stones were flying with great speed. It had to overflow someday.

The last straw was the story of the stolen money. Summer 2005, I work on a reality show. There is a lot of work, starting soon, we work for twelve hours seven days a week. And here is good luck – for once we were released early, at 20.00. My friend and I grab a brandy and fly to relieve tension in the long-suffering grandmother's apartment. After (I don't remember) a friend put me in a taxi and told me the address of my parents. I had something about 1200 dollars with me – the money was not mine, the “workers”, it was the taxi driver who stole it from me. And, judging by the condition of my clothes, he just threw me out of the car. Thank you not to rape or kill.

I remember how, having once again distinguished myself, I told my mother: maybe I should be encoded? She replied: “What are you making up? You just need to pull yourself together. You're not an alcoholic! ” Mom didn’t want to admit reality simply because she didn’t know what to do with it.

Out of despair, I nevertheless went to be encoded. I wanted to take a break from the troubles that fell on me every now and then. I was not going to quit drinking forever, rather I was arranging a sober vacation for myself.

I didn't get sober, I just didn't drink alcohol

In honor of the encoding, my parents gave me a trip to St. Petersburg. The three of us went, staying with my relatives. Parents with them, of course, drank – how could they do without it on vacation. It was unbearable for me to see them drunk. I somehow could not stand it and said in a rage: “Well, why can't you not drink at all?” Petersburg saved me. I ran away into its rain, got lost among the canals, and then I definitely decided that I would return here to live.

I lasted a year and a half using the encoding (it was the standard encoding by hypnosis), and my affairs seemed to go smoothly: I met my future husband, there were much fewer problems at work, I began to look decent and earn money, I stopped losing phones and money got a license, my parents bought me a car. But almost every day I drank non-alcoholic beer, and my husband accompanied me with alcoholic beer. I didn't get sober, I just didn't drink alcohol.

Non-alcoholic beer is a ticking time bomb. Someday alcohol will replace it, and then dynamite will work. One evening, when my “zero” was not in the store, I decided to try a regular drink. It was scary (if received, the encoder promised a stroke and heart attack), but I'm brave.

Encoding is not a bad thing on one condition: if you put yourself on pause and start changing your life, actively developing towards sobriety, solving problems that led you to alcoholism. It is important to move in a different direction.

Having decoded, I, as they say, got hold of alcohol. It was a tremendous – even by my standards – binge. Alcohol returned to my life, as if it never left it. And six months later, I find out that I am pregnant.

About pain peak

I didn’t think about the child (to be honest, I’m still not sure that motherhood is mine), but my mother constantly said: “I was born when your grandmother was 27, I’m you too at 27, it’s time for you to give birth to a girl” …

I thought that maybe my mother was right: I am married, and besides, all people give birth. At the same time, I did not ask myself: “Why do you need a child? Do you want to look after him, be responsible for him? ” Then I didn’t ask myself questions, I didn’t know how to talk to myself, to hear myself.

I searched the Internet for stories of women who also drank and gave birth to healthy children.

Having learned about the pregnancy, I was not at all happy, but I promised myself that I would quit drinking and smoking. Gradually. I managed to slow down by giving up my favorite spirits, but I could not stop drinking at all. Every day I promised myself that I would quit tomorrow, and I searched the Internet for stories of women who also drank and gave birth to healthy children.

In the seventh month of pregnancy, a placental abruption occurred, I was given an emergency caesarean, the baby died, and I went into a binge, devoured by a sense of guilt for drinking and refusing to go to bed. It was a habit to blame myself. He did it, obeyed – and you can live on without changing anything.

At that time I already had very bad hangovers, I was seriously afraid of delirium tremens. Now it is already difficult to describe this state … You cannot do anything. Head splits. Grabs the heart. It is hot, then cold, you cannot lie still, your body twitches, you are unable to eat or drink, you throw in vitamins – nothing helps. You cannot fall asleep without light and a TV, and even with them it does not work out very well – sleep is intermittent and sticky. And a huge anxiety, one that is bigger than you: something is going to happen now.

I remember sitting in the car with a friend, and I said: my husband forbids me to drink, I probably have to quit, otherwise he will leave. A friend nods sympathetically – it's hard, they say, you understand. It was August 2008: my first attempt at tying myself.

About living with sobriety

Alcohol is a very difficult form of recreation. Now I am amazed at how my body in general withstood all this. I was treated, tried to quit and again broke down, almost lost faith in myself.

I finally quit drinking on March 22, 2010. Not that I decided that on the 22nd, on the bright day of the vernal equinox, I stop drinking, hurray. It was just one of the many attempts that led to the fact that for almost seven years I have not drunk. Not a drop. My husband does not drink, parents do not drink – without this support, I think nothing would have happened.

At first, I thought something like this: when he saw that I had stopped drinking, God will come down to my earth and say: “Yulia, what a clever you are, well, finally, they waited, now everything will be fine! I will now reward you as it should be – you will be the happiest with me. “

To my surprise, this was not the case. Gifts did not fall from the sky. I was sober – that's all. Here it is, my whole life – the light is like in an operating room, you can't hide. For the most part, I felt lonely and terribly unhappy. But against the background of this global misfortune, for the first time I tried to do other things, for example, talk about my feelings or train willpower. This is the most important thing – if you cannot walk in the other direction, you must at least lie down in that direction, make at least some body movement.

The first sober year is difficult. You are so ashamed of your past that you want one thing: to dissolve, go underground. I took my husband's last name, changed my phone number and email address, retired from social networks and distanced myself from my friends as much as possible. All I had was me, who drank fourteen years of my life. Who didn't know herself. For the first time I was left alone with myself, I learned to talk to myself. It was unusual to live completely without anesthesia, to be permanently present in your life, without hiding or running away. I don't think I've cried so much in my life.

A couple of years before I quit drinking completely, I became a vegetarian. I think the recovery process started exactly when I first thought about what (or rather, whom) I eat, that in the world, besides me, there are other creatures that live and suffer, that there might be someone else worse than me. Asceticism appeared in my life, which developed and made me stronger.

Sometimes I remember myself and I don't believe that it was me and not a character from the movie “Trainspotting”. Thank God, I was able to forgive myself and finally start treating myself well – with love and care. It was not easy and took a long time, but I managed it (not without the help of a psychotherapist). The next step is to develop, albeit slowly and slowly, but go forward every day.

In the summer of 2010, my husband and I quit smoking. I started to meditate. Every free minute I read affirmations and convinced myself that I could handle everything.

Three years ago I started the Sober Blog. At first, it was for me something like a diary, a platform for reflection: I wrote because I felt an inner need. At first, no one read the blog, but, one way or another, it was a statement about myself – I am, yes, I drank, but I was able to quit, I live.

Beautiful wealthy women come to me, they have husbands and children, and everything seems to be fine. Only every day they secretly drink a bottle of red wine

Then I realized that sitting and reflecting is the same as doing nothing. Because there are thousands of people like me. They are just as helpless, they do not understand how to end the war within themselves. Therefore, now I am conducting consultations for people with similar problems. Everyone has different degrees of dependence: beautiful wealthy women come to me, they have husbands and children, and everything seems to be fine. Only every day they secretly drink a bottle of red wine. It is not customary to talk about this, but almost every second person in our country drinks with one or another frequency. That is, he drinks regularly. And few people admit it to themselves.

I did not want to be ashamed of myself and my past – it bothered me, I felt not free. Therefore, I plucked up the courage and began to talk about alcohol addiction, so that alcoholism would no longer be regarded as something shameful or super-secret.

I am honest: I am not a psychologist or a narcologist. I am a former alcoholic. And I, unfortunately or fortunately, know too much about how to quit drinking and how not to do it. I try to help those who have realized for themselves that they want to live soberly and are ready to do something for this. In this case, the more information the better. Therefore, I am here and share my experience – how I drank and how I live now.

Better sleep

You will wake up feeling refreshed and energized, and not tired as a week ago (before giving up alcohol). Alcohol disrupts normal sleep patterns. Instead of 6-7 REM sleep cycles at night, according to experts from The Priory Group, you only have 1 or 2 when you drink.

Agree, this man has definitely become more energetic.

A study in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Studies found that drinking alcohol before bedtime increases alpha wave patterns in the brain, a type of brain activity that usually occurs when you are awake but resting.

Improving sleep also has many benefits, including increased productivity and efficiency.

Water balance and youth

Everyone knows that awful feeling of complete dehydration and headache after a hard night of drinking.

This is because you are losing about four times more fluid than what you drank. If you give up alcohol, you can noticeably rejuvenate.

This man looks younger every year.

No headache

The headache occurs because your organs are drawing water from your brain due to dehydration. Avoiding alcohol will improve mood and concentration, and the frequency of headaches will decrease.

No acid reflux

After two weeks without alcohol, you will notice a decrease in reflux when stomach acid burns your throat.

Weight loss

Alcohol increases your daily calorie intake. One bottle of beer has an average of 208 calories, and a glass of wine has 83.

On top of that, alcoholic drinks force us to gravitate towards a snack, which increases our calorie intake. Avoiding alcohol will lead to weight loss.

Photo with a difference of 8.5 months.

Photo with a difference of 8.5 months.

Pressure is normal

After quitting alcohol, your blood pressure will gradually drop back to normal levels. This will reduce the risk of future health problems, including type 2 diabetes.

Healthy heart

In severe cases, drinking alcohol can trigger alcoholic cardiomyopathy, which causes the heart to swell and lose its ability to pump blood throughout the body.

The effect of ethanol on the vessels of the skin

Both capillaries and larger arteries react to ethanol in the same way – due to the harmful effects of ethyl alcohol, the cells of the walls begin to die off. As a result, the vessels become not so strong and lose their initial elasticity, which negatively affects metabolic processes.

Because of this, after a few months of alcohol abuse, the first changes in appearance appear – the skin on the face becomes drier, peeling, redness and irritation appear. If you do not give up alcohol, the condition of the skin on the face will gradually deteriorate, and the renewal of the epidermis will be extremely slow.

Causes of facial edema in drinking people

One of the first to suffer from uncontrolled drinking of alcoholic beverages is the urinary system. Beer, wine, vodka and other alcohol, when decomposed, release a large amount of toxins, for the elimination of which the body uses the kidneys and liver, forcing them to function in an enhanced mode.

If these organs are constantly exposed to excessive stress, sooner or later this will provoke a water imbalance and the development of other dangerous disorders.

It is kidney disease that is the main reason why alcoholics often have face swelling and bags under the eyes. In not properly filtered blood, the concentration of iron, vitamins and various trace elements decreases over time, which adversely affects the state of health and appearance.

Important! The kidneys can work at an increased pace for only a few years, after which they simply fail. As a result, the risk of a hypertensive crisis increases, which often ends in a stroke.

Changes in appearance

The longer a person suffers from alcohol addiction, the easier it is to distinguish him from the crowd. Moreover, each stage of alcoholism is accompanied by its own characteristic features:

First stage

At this stage of addiction, the appearance of the alcoholic practically does not change, so it will be problematic to recognize the addiction. The only symptoms that can betray alcohol addiction include:

  • slight swelling, which can be mistaken for a symptom of a cold;
  • red eyes and the appearance of dark circles under the eyes – usually this symptom appears after 3-4 months of regular drinking, but it is often confused with a symptom of fatigue or insomnia.

To avoid unnecessary conversations, the drinker may try to hide any changes in appearance. But this is not at all easy to do, especially when it comes to women. If she continues to apply to the bottle every day, her face will look wrinkled and tired – it is unlikely that it will be possible to disguise all this with the help of decorative cosmetics.

Influence on appearance

On a note! A fairly effective way to remove bags under the eyes after drinking is to apply brewed tea bags to problem areas for 5-10 minutes.

Second stage

If timely measures are not taken, and the person continues to abuse alcohol, his appearance will continue to deteriorate, and the effect of alcohol on the skin condition will be even more pronounced. At the second stage, in addition to the primary ones, new signs of alcoholism are added on the face and body:

  • not only swelling appears on the face, but also redness and peeling, indicating problems with metabolic processes. If the epidermis is too sensitive, rashes may often appear on the face;
  • bags under the eyes from alcohol are always present and do not go away, even if the person has not drunk for several days;
  • since during hard drinking metabolic processes are disturbed, a person can lose a lot of weight or, conversely, gain weight, which will also affect the face;
  • due to liver damage to toxins and alcohol decomposition products, the face acquires a yellow-gray tint, true signs of premature aging appear;
  • since the kidneys lose the ability to remove fluid from the intercellular space, edema appears throughout the alcoholic's body. At the same time, human skin is severely dehydrated, which is why it peels off and loses its original shade.

The second stage of alcoholism is considered chronic, at this stage indirect symptoms of the disease begin to appear. People for whom drinking becomes the most important thing in life simply stop taking care of themselves, become untidy and unkempt.

Third stage

Since alcohol abuse has a detrimental effect on appearance and is accompanied by an aggravation of the tendency to change it, it will not be difficult to recognize an alcoholic, especially if the person is in the third stage of addiction. If the disease has passed into this form, it entails not only external, but also mental changes. If we talk about how alcohol changes appearance at the third stage, then in most cases the following changes can be noted:

  • hyperemia of the skin becomes chronic and becomes pronounced – red streaks and spots appear on the face;
  • there are plentiful foci of peeling on the face;
  • in a drunken person, hair thinns greatly, they become brittle and dull;
  • facial features change, it becomes swollen and puffy;
  • in the third stage of alcoholism, the eyes will be red not only after the direct consumption of alcohol, but also constantly, which is due to the thinning of the capillaries;
  • most people suffering from drunkenness have a shifting gaze.

 Alcoholism

People who are at this stage of alcoholism look detached, they are betrayed by a shaky gait and impaired coordination of movements.

Benefit or harm

"Life passed by itself": the story of a woman who quit drinking after 14 years of addiction. Tag: Female alcoholism

Despite the fact that alcohol is in principle considered a harmful product, for many decades (if not centuries) there has been a debate about whether there are any health benefits from all these distilled and fermented fun drinks. While the arguments continue, we sometimes get horrified in the morning after a feast, looking at ourselves in the mirror.

Moderate (albeit regular) consumption of alcoholic beverages is unlikely to lead to the fact that you will begin to lose your human appearance in the near future. Moreover: there are a number of studies (we will talk about one of them a little later) that allegedly prove certain benefits for the health of individual organs (but not for health in general!) From very moderate and occasional drinking.

In the long term, if we are talking about the regular use of alcoholic beverages (albeit of very high quality!) In quantities that can hardly be called moderate, we begin to notice some changes in our appearance that are clearly caused by many years of “friendship” with alcohol.

While the debate about the dangers and benefits of drinking is conducted at the household level, read not articles on the Internet, but the conclusions of numerous experts and scientists based on the results of hundreds and hundreds of studies. And these are not some British scientists! Although they also claim that 60 percent of our health problems are related to alcohol consumption.

Within the framework of this article, the conclusions of the specialists of the Institute for the Study of Alcohol, based in London, UK, are of interest. Experts, having studied the results of various international studies, conducted a detailed analysis of the changes that occur to our appearance over a long period of drinking. It's time to get familiar with them.

Premature aging

According to dermatologists and cosmetologists, nothing destroys our skin as actively and quickly as alcohol-containing drinks do. The famous women's fashion magazine Vogue published at one time the conclusions of world-famous health nutritionists, who confirmed that the skin of most of their patients wears out prematurely because of alcohol.

  • Let's look at the mechanism by which alcohol affects the skin.

It is not disputed that excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages leads to regular dehydration of the body. After a violent libation, some drink a considerable amount of water during the night; others wake up in the morning, praying for a glass or bottle of life-saving liquid by their bedside, which they greedily devour. Still others drink a lot of liquid both at night and in the morning.

It would seem – what does dehydration have to do with it? However, this water, as they say, is not for our future use! Regular alcohol consumption slows down the production of the so-called antidiuretic hormone called vasopressin. The task of this hormone is to preserve fluid in our body, which is especially important for blood vessels.

  • It is necessary to compensate for the lack of fluid in the body after drinking alcohol, but this is a double-edged sword. A large amount of fluid overloads our kidneys, which begin to work twice as actively as usual. The kidneys seem to try to maintain the balance of fluid in the body, which leads, in any case, to temporary dehydration.

A kind of litmus test that tells us that we too often expose our own body to dehydration is our skin (by the way, the largest organ in our body). In this case, the human skin, even if it is relatively young, loses its elasticity, softness and moisture, becoming covered with wrinkles, cracks, and potholes. And we start to look older than we really are.

Helpful advice

Nobody forces you to give up alcohol – it should be exclusively your conscious and individual decision. However, it is highly recommended that you accompany every glass or glass you drink with a little water to prevent dehydration, rather than combat its effects. The rule “do not drink” has long discredited itself! The main thing is to drink it with clean water (still).

Hair problems

Lush, healthy curls – a reason for pride and for the envy of others – also suffer from regular alcohol consumption as much as our skin. The hair of the drinker becomes brittle, turns gray earlier, split ends appear (even if you have never encountered such a problem before).

In modern cosmetology, there are many ways to combat split ends of hair, as well as means to add volume and healthy appearance to our hair. However, answer this question: would you give up alcohol if you knew for sure that without drinking alcohol on a regular basis, you simply would not need to use all this expensive hair cosmetics?

The fact is that excessive alcohol consumption leads to a deficiency of zinc in our body. According to research by American scientists from the National Institutes of Health, approximately 30 to 50 percent of regularly drinking people suffer from a significant permanent lack of zinc in the body, which leads to intense hair loss.

The matter is not limited to zinc: if alcohol is a regular “guest” in our body, it also leads to a lack of a number of essential vitamins and minerals. In particular, people who drink have a lack of vitamins B and C, which, against the background of an increased level of the hormone estrogen, leads to a violation of the structure of hair, their loss and growth retardation.

Helpful advice

If it so happens that you often come to grips with the “green snake” and lose it, periodically getting drunk, it is strongly recommended to organize your hair more serious careful care. Better to stop abusing alcohol!

Skin changes color

Regular consumption of alcoholic beverages is often the cause of facial redness. In the most severe cases, these color changes can be so pronounced that the face becomes not only red, but also bluish. This phenomenon is called rosacea and, worst of all, it can be irreversible.

But let's first: Everyone knows that excessive amounts of alcohol lead to a significant increase in blood flow to the skin, which translates into an unhealthy (at best, not very natural) skin tone. Often this shade lasts for several days (we are not discussing the extreme signs of alcoholism, like a puffy face and a puffy blue nose!).

The reason is that alcohol causes even the smallest blood vessels in the skin to dilate. Because of this phenomenon, a large amount of blood ends up at the very surface of our skin. Quite often, the vessels and capillaries simply cannot withstand and burst. The results are especially good on the face of heavy drinkers.

Attention!

Not only the skin of our face suffers, but also the vessels of our eyes. But even if this fact does not bother you much and is unlikely to force you to refuse regular libations, think about this: bloodshot eyes are just the beginning. In particularly serious cases, this can lead to complete or partial loss of vision.

This phenomenon is called neuropathy (toxic amblyopia, that is, impaired vision). But that's not all! The consequences are also a decrease in the functionality of our pupils. In other words, the normal fast connection between our eyes and the brain is lost.

Change in facial expressions

The devil, of course, is in the details – that is, individual signs that you regularly go too far with alcohol can be seen on problems with your skin, hair, circles under the eyes, and so on. However, all these changes in the complex significantly change the facial expressions of our face in the complex.

There is such a not very scientific term – the face of an alcoholic. Of course, the physiognomy of an obvious lover of “pouring the plum” changes in a cardinal and specific way. However, even in relatively moderate but regular drinkers, the same symptoms can be observed, although they are less pronounced.

One of the typical signs that you go over with alcohol may be facial wrinkles on your forehead, which appear ahead of time (it is also one of the signs of the same premature aging ). The reason is that in people who often drink, the face itself is usually relaxed (facial muscles), and the forehead muscles, on the contrary, are tense.

Relaxed facial muscles lead to the fact that the face sinks somewhat: the corners of the mouth sag, the nostrils widen, the lips become larger, and folds form in the inner eye. These signs may be subtle, but when coupled with other signs of high alcohol abuse, the frequent drinker's face becomes less attractive.

Does the liver recover

This organ is the main “cleansing factory” of the body – it distills a large amount of blood through itself. Moreover, the liver is considered one of the fastest regenerating organs. If, over the years of drinking, she has not undergone cirrhosis or other serious consequences under the influence of ethanol, then recovery will occur relatively quickly. To speed up the regeneration process, a former alcoholic needs to stick to a diet that consists of natural and healthy foods.

In the first months after the refusal of alcohol, it is necessary to minimize or it is better to completely exclude food, which contains intensifiers of taste and smell, emulsifiers, preservatives, dyes and other components of the chemical industry. Daily consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables, fresh juices and natural products will help to quickly put in order not only the liver, but also the whole body. In this case, the intake of synthetic trace elements and vitamins is not recommended, even if their content in the body is low.

Brain cells after alcohol

The brain begins to reanimate approximately 16 days after giving up alcohol, but the speed of recovery of this organ depends on which parts have been affected. Drinkers are often unaware of the destructive effects alcohol has on brain cells. If a person continues to drink, then this kind of dependence will eventually lead to the degradation of all brain function and the formation of various mental illnesses. All this will lead to dementia, i.e. dementia.

Renal and pancreas resuscitation

Against the background of alcoholism, renal failure can develop, but the kidneys, like the liver, can independently reanimate. If you stop the intake of alcohol, then this process will take at least 7-8 weeks – the specific period depends on the experience of the alcoholic, age, kidney resource and state of health. You can speed up the process of kidney rehabilitation with the help of recommendations:

  • Establish a drinking regimen, join a fractional and sparing diet.
  • Set aside time for active sports on a regular basis. Physical activity helps to speed up metabolic processes. This has a positive effect on the work of the entire urinary system.

Recommendations to help return the pancreas to normal operation are almost the same as for the liver. Additionally, you can say that you need to eat more often, but in smaller portions. Try to organize your diet so that there are fewer thermally processed and fatty foods on the menu. At the same time, increase your intake of vegetable fats (oils, nuts) and natural protein.

Quitting alcohol: consequences by day

Even if there is a desire to quit drinking alcohol, withdrawal causes fear of a sober life. It's not just about psychological issues. The poisoned body, when refusing new portions, begins to experience stress. Withdrawal symptoms appear, accompanied by:

  • anxiety;
  • headaches due to vasospasm;
  • nausea;
  • weakness;
  • vomiting;
  • tremors of certain parts or the whole body;
  • violation of attention;
  • thinking problems;
  • depressive state;
  • a feeling of fear.

Depression with alcohol withdrawal

It is not very easy to get out of the habit of drinking alcohol. Psychological changes in the absence of alcohol on the brain can be serious, requiring the help of specialists, taking antidepressants. A person in this state has symptoms of depression:

  • loses confidence in himself;
  • gets annoyed;
  • become aggressive;
  • feels hostility where there is none;
  • feels remorse;
  • sees everything in a negative light;
  • cannot relax;
  • sleeps poorly;
  • often changes mood;
  • easily aroused;
  • indifferent to others;
  • may attempt suicide.

When a person abruptly quit drinking, the consequences of the day, of course, will worry him.

Moral preparation for what will happen in the body and what can be expected is very important.

Of course, when he suddenly stopped drinking, the consequences for everyone can be different, because here the gender of the person, and the initial state of the body, and how many days they have consumed alcohol play a significant role.

For people who drink, quitting drinking is already a big act, therefore it is very important for them to prepare for this, so that if suddenly it becomes bad, the person does not get scared and does not grab alcohol again, trying to justify this by the fact that when he takes alcohol, he feels it is better that the body can no longer live without alcohol.

  1. After 3 days after giving up alcohol, alcohol is completely removed from the blood. Getting rid of toxic substances begins.
  2. In the first week, sleep begins to improve, a person falls asleep more calmly and faster, sleeps better. This week, you can take a course of glycine or herbal soothing infusions, such as valerian and peony, to speed up the normalization of well-being. In the same 7 days after quitting drinking, there will be an improvement in well-being and appearance: a blush will appear, the skin will become more elastic. The work of the gastrointestinal tract is getting better, but some, due to a little nausea, may still be bothered by a lack of appetite, but this symptom disappears pretty soon.
  3. After 2 weeks after a person quit drinking alcoholic beverages, the work of the cardiovascular system improves, tachycardia (increased heart rate) goes away, blood pressure normalizes, headaches and dizziness that could torment before, disappear. A person begins to think faster and memorize information, speech becomes more beautiful and varied, there is an interest in new things in life, in work.
  4. Within a month, alcohol is completely removed from the brain, in which it remains the longest. All signs of a depressive state, irritability and dissatisfaction with oneself and others disappear, a person becomes calm and happy, his relations with the outside world and his family are completely improved. After this period, weight normalization also occurs, because alcohol has a very strong effect on metabolism. Accordingly, those who actively had a snack during feasts will lose weight, and those who, on the contrary, have lost a lot of weight while taking alcoholic beverages, will be able to gain body weight and look like a healthy person.

After a person has stopped drinking, of course, one cannot do without withdrawal syndrome, when the feeling that everything is bad haunted, headache, nausea, depression. A completely different feeling of myself.

And others are perceived differently. However, it is worth enduring a little, and in a day or two there will be an improvement in the body, a person will feel healthier.

The quality of life after the abolition of alcohol will noticeably improve, everything around will sparkle with new colors, there will be much more time for yourself, your hobbies and loved ones.

The general condition of the human body is always reflected in its appearance and an experienced doctor, by one glance at the face, can diagnose a number of ailments that the patient suffers from. The most noticeable marks are the excessive use of alcoholic beverages. The face of an alcoholic reveals not one or two characteristic signs, but a whole complex of pathological changes, which became all the more obvious the longer the addiction lasted.

What can a person's face tell?

A person's face can tell a lot about his character, habits, lifestyle, social and intellectual level and other individual characteristics. Being a kind of visiting card, an attractive face contributes to success, building a brilliant career and establishing contacts with people, and, conversely, any flaws in appearance significantly complicate life.

Alcohol abuse leaves an indelible mark on faces, significantly altering features and making it impossible to hide this pernicious passion in secrecy. The face of a drunkard is a very unsightly and repulsive sight, capable of causing only negative associations in others with all the ensuing consequences.

Characteristic features of the face of drunken alcoholics

In medicine, there is the term “face of an alcoholic.” This concept is a collective image of the most typical features and characteristics of the appearance of a person who abuses alcohol. First of all, such a face can be recognized by its characteristic puffiness and strongly pronounced pigmentation. Swelling in the wings of the nose and eyelids is usually most noticeable, and the skin on the cheeks becomes pale.

Skin turns bluish, looks withered and dehydrated, and enlarged pores often become inflamed. Violet vascular network, formed due to micro-rupture of capillaries, is also considered an integral sign of alcoholism. Facial features become coarse, and the look loses meaning. A person looks much older than his years, which is primarily characteristic of women who, even having abandoned the bottle, will no longer be able to return their former attractiveness and freshness.

Who would have thought:

Alcohol changes the body's hormones, increasing the amount of male hormones in women and female hormones in men. It is for this reason that the sexual desire of drinkers quickly fades away and even external sex differences are erased, turning them into asexual alcoholics.

Under the influence of alcohol, irreversible changes in the tone of facial muscles occur, which leads to drooping of the cheekbones and lips. The forehead, on the contrary, is constantly in a tense state, which, in combination with half-closed, puffy eyes, is a very repulsive picture. The pores of the skin become noticeably enlarged and often inflamed, leading to rashes and ulcers.
