Sea sponge: from make-up remover to baby skin care

28

A natural sponge is the most ancient and natural remedy for cleansing the skin. It can compete with any cleansing sponge, if only because it is 100% organic and does not harm the environment. And your skin.

Synthetic sponges and facial cleansers have a natural competitor – a sea sponge. It is a skin cleanser that has been used by mankind since ancient times. But it is still relevant today due to its accessibility and versatility.

History of the sea sponge

The extraction of natural sponge was carried out in the Roman Empire, Egypt, Hellenistic Greece. About how multifunctional it is, they really guessed back in antiquity. Legionnaires of the Roman Empire used it as a pad to keep their metal armor from chafing their skin. In Egypt and Greece, sponges were soaked with a decoction of soapwort root – it foamed and was used as a shower and wash gel.

Greek and Roman women also used them for other purposes. Sponges were soaked in lemon juice and used for contraception … They were also used as a natural exfoliant. The sponge gently exfoliated the skin, making it smooth and radiant.

Sea sponge: use cases

The most obvious (and proven for thousands of years) way is to cleanse the skin of the face. The organic sponge is suitable even for those with sensitive skin due to its soft texture. Synthetic sponges for washing are really made in her likeness, but they sometimes irritate the skin and provoke peeling.

With a sponge, you can remove the remnants of makeup, sebum, excess cosmetic creams and masks. It is used in the care of the delicate skin of babies, so as not to cause them discomfort and cause irritation. The sponge is reusable: with proper use, one will last 6-12 months. The best alternative to makeup remover wipes and cotton pads!

The sea sponge delicately removes dead cells, does not provoke skin stretching and does not stimulate excessive production of sebum.

How to use and store a sea sponge

When dry, it looks more like a pumice stone than a gentle cleansing sponge. Hold it under warm water for a while – it will become soft and increase in size. Now you can apply a little cleanser on it and use it for its intended purpose! Or just massage your skin with a damp sponge.

After the washing ritual, the sponge must be rinsed under running water and squeezed out. But it's still not worth twisting: the sponge not only provides delicate treatment for your skin, but also requires a similar attitude towards itself. It should not be left in the sun, but be sure to let it dry at room temperature.

To prevent the sponge from becoming a home for bacteria, twice a month it needs more than just rinsing with clean water. Soak it for 5-10 minutes in a glass of water with the addition of a teaspoon of soda, then rinse and dry. Such care will not harm the sponge, but it will definitely protect you from acne and other unpleasant surprises.
