What is interesting to see in the capital of the Saratov region in one day on your own
It is better for a tourist to start acquaintance with Saratov from the walking route through the city. First, you should take a walk along Kirov Avenue to Chernyshevsky Square. Then turn onto Radishchev Street and walk to the Art Museum. Alexander Nikolaevich and the Lipki park. Next – go to Babushkin Vzvoz and move to Chernyshevsky Street and the famous museum-estate of the same name.
There are always a lot of Saratov residents walking on the square
From Grandma's Vzvoz we go down to the Volga. We walk and admire nature on the Embankment, then along the Fedin and Gagarin squares, and Lermontov street. We reach the Museum Square, where the famous Holy Trinity Cathedral stands.
The length of the route is about 10 km, so it is advisable to go on a city tour in comfortable shoes and do not forget to take a guidebook with detailed descriptions of all the memorable places of the city.
Installed in front of one of the buildings of the Saratov University
For those who have 2 days at their disposal, an independent walk along Moskovskaya Street is suitable. There you can see the monument to Cyril and Methodius, the Profitable House, the Zybin's mansion, interesting for its architecture, the Moskovskaya hotel. It is also worth going to the Artist's House, to the square of the first teacher and to other sights for which the city is famous.
Transport: how to get to Saratov, how to get around the city and where to go in the Saratov region
How to get to Saratov inexpensively?
Well, firstly, you need a civil passport, and secondly, an air ticket or a train ticket. Let's note right away that a plane to Saratov costs about the same as a rocket to Mars RT ticket (in one direction and the other) from Moscow, if you buy it strongly in advance, will cost about 6-7 thousand rubles. The usual price is 10-12 thousand. And all because in Saratov there is actually a monopoly on the airport – earlier only the notorious Saravia flew there, and only since 2018 Aeroflot and S7 flew to the city. But they prudently did not reduce prices … So the Saratov residents waited on August 20, 2019, when they opened a new Saratov airport, from where the Pobeda locomotive now flies.
So if you just need to get to Saratov “inexpensively”, then only the train and the bus remain. Saratov is a major railway junction, so it is quite easy to get here by train. From Moscow, a ticket to the side of a reserved seat can be caught for 800 rubles, a ticket for the lower bunk of the same carriage costs about 1,500 rubles, but I would call 2,500 rubles a good price for a ticket in a compartment. For St. Petersburg, prices are about 30% more expensive. Note that trains to Saratov (especially from Moscow and St. Petersburg) run mostly new, so you definitely shouldn't be afraid of a train trip.
Well, and the bus: personally, I would not recommend it, because the roads in the Saratov region, frankly, are not very good, and it travels for a long time, almost 14 hours. And the difference in price is not very big – a bus ticket from Saratov to Moscow costs about 1,500 rubles.
How to get around the city?
In Saratov, public transport is poorly developed, so it is better not to meddle here in winter – the roads will most likely be unclean, and you will wait for your trolleybus-bus for a very long time, and then stand still in ten-point traffic jams.
So go in the summer! In summer, the city is good and there are much fewer problems with transport, moreover, there is a convenient transport hub near the airport and the railway station: you can ride both a trolleybus and a bus. Visitors are especially surprised by the location of the old airport – you pick up your luggage from the belt, leave the building, and there is a public transport stop right in front of you! Traveling by trams is not as romantic as in Berlin, just because they are not very pretty here; but if you need to get to your destination by a certain time, then it is more productive to move on this particular transport, admiring the views from the window. But we do not recommend getting on the buses – they are old in Saratov (they saw Germany in the 80s), cramped and dirty.
Keep in mind: public transport turns into a pumpkin at about 21:00 – later you will have to stand at the bus stop for a very long time.
Travel by tram and trolleybus in 2020 costs 23 rubles if you pay in cash and 21 rubles if you pay by card. Bus and shuttle “Gazelle” cost the same – 23 rubles. We will pay special attention to prices for intercity to neighboring Engels, which we will discuss below. Only buses go to Engels and you will have to pay 26 rubles for the journey.
Well, the most comfortable option to travel around Saratov is a taxi. The cheapest way to call a taxi is online, especially since nowadays there are quite a few special applications:
- Taxi “Lucky”
- Metro Taxi
- Yandex,
- Taxi “Maxim”,
- Uber.
Is it possible to travel without a ticket?
In 99% of cases, no – there is a conductor in each transport, and if not, then the exit is carried out only through the front door when paying directly to the driver. One good thing is that there are virtually no fines for travel without a ticket. So if you want to ride for free, then you can pretend to be a felt boot or get rude to the driver – then you will simply be kicked out of the transport. But keep in mind – they can also beat you. You can act differently: politely ask to enter into a penniless situation, explaining the situation – for example, you are hitchhiking.
How to get around the Saratov region?
If you are already tired of being in Saratov (I don't believe you!), Move on. Take an intercity bus (schedule on the Saratov Bus Station website) or a regional train / commuter train (schedule on the Railway Station website). Between themselves, they do not differ much in terms of comfort, but buses, as a rule, are cheaper, and in some cases even faster.

What to bring as a souvenir
Saratov is famous for its edible souvenirs. First of all, this is the famous Saratov kalach. It is baked according to the same recipe, created back in the 19th century. In addition, Bohemia beer is often brought from this city, which is brewed according to an old Czech recipe from Czech ingredients. And, of course, fish should be brought from Saratov.
Saratov kalach was always considered the most delicious bread in Russia, as it was made from high quality grain.
If the journey home from Saratov is expected to be a long one, then food souvenirs are not suitable. Then you can opt for the local light fabric “sarpinke”, which was produced by the Germans living in the local area in the 19th century.
Church Soothe My Sorrows
In 1906, in the center of Saratov, the construction of an Orthodox church (designed by PF Zybin) in honor of the icon of the Mother of God “Consolation in sorrows and sorrows” was completed. According to legend, the temple icon was a copy from the Athos miraculous image.
During the period of revolutionary persecutions, the temple was lucky – there were no warehouses or granaries, it was not destroyed. During the years of Soviet power, a planetarium was located in the temple building.
In 1990, the building was returned to the diocese. Over the course of three years, repairs were carried out, a side-chapel and a bell tower were built. In 1993, the temple was consecrated and became operational.
Soothe my sorrows – that's what the temple is called

The sights of the Saratov region are closely related to the name of Yuri Gagarin, the world's first cosmonaut. The Saratov region is replete with monuments, museum expositions and whole architectural complexes dedicated to the name of the national hero – near the village of Smelovka there is an open-air museum “Gagarinskoye Pole” with the place of the cosmonaut's landing, several monuments to Yuri Alekseevich have been opened in Saratov and there are thematic exhibitions, including Local history museum of the city.
In the historical heart of Saratov, the most fascinating attraction of the Saratov region is located – the Museum of Local Lore, with exhibitions about the history of the Volga region. The main attraction of Saratov is the Trinity Cathedral – a magnificent temple complex of the 17th century. Other Orthodox sights of the Saratov region are the Roman Catholic Church in the village of Kamenka, the Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos in Khvalynsk, Holy Trinity Cathedral in Volsk, and the Church of the Archangel Michael.
Among the museums of the Saratov region there is an art gallery named after A. A.N. Radishchev, the estate museum complex of Chernyshevsky, the ethnographic museum, several local history and others. Natural objects of the region – Stepan Razin's Cliff, Kudeyarova Cave, Khvalynsky National Park, Limonarii, Saratov Victory Park. Among the attractions of the Saratov region, it is worth noting the natural heritage of the region – magnificent chalk cliffs, spreading forests and pine forests, nature reserves, the picturesque Volga, city embankments, beaches, mountains shrouded in legends and endless valleys.
Vavilov Dol
Located near the village of Shchigry. It was formed by a robber, after whom it was named. He was blinded for numerous crimes and left for dead. Babel repented, dug a cave in the forest and devoted his life to prayers. Other hermits began to join him. This is how the cave monastery was formed. During the war years, he and the church built nearby were almost destroyed. Now there is a chapel with a well and a font.
Holy Trinity Cathedral
If you move up from the Cosmonauts Embankment (from the river station) along Moskovskaya Street, you find yourself on the Museum Square. It houses the Holy Trinity Cathedral – the first Orthodox church on the Saratov land.
The history of this temple is consonant with the history of the city: it was transferred from the left bank to the right side of the Volga, burned (originally the temple was built of wood) together with the fortress. In 1697, the construction of a stone church began.
Trinity Cathedral (built in the Moscow Baroque style) is the only architectural structure dating back to the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries.
Over the past centuries, the image of the temple has changed, the cathedral has been rebuilt. But it has always remained a spiritual haven for parishioners. Ordinary townspeople came to it, royal persons attended the service:
- Peter the Great (1722)
- Prince Nikolai Alexandrovich, brother of the crowned Alexander III the Peacemaker (1863)
- Maria Alexandrovna, granddaughter of Nicholas I (1913)
During the Soviet era, the cathedral was closed for services for a short time – from 1936 to 1942. At this time, it was transferred to the Regional Museum as a repository. This saved the cathedral from the sad fate of other temples.
Miscellaneous about Saratov
Well, about different things: about what was not included in other sections.
How much will the trip to Saratov cost me?
To live one day in Saratov, you need at least 1,200 rubles per person: this includes a room in a modest hotel, 4 rides by public transport and two lunches in inexpensive cafes.
But in general, if you come from Moscow, then you can just boo – the regional prices surprise Muscovites so much that they take, try and buy everything in a row – and still do not spend more than two or three thousand rubles on entertainment and food.
When are the best weather conditions in Saratov?
The most favorable period for pleasant walks and exploring the city sights is in May-July. In May, for example, an impressive blooming of trees, and in summer the blooming greenery on the Embankment and the beautiful Volga are simply breathtaking, especially beautiful and attractive in summer are city squares.
In summer, you can go on exciting cruises and admire local sights from the deck of a pleasure boat. And, of course, rest at the camp sites! You can relax near the water in “Ivolga”, “Volzhsky Daly”, “Assembly” and “Cambodia”.
What shouldn't you do?
We do not recommend that you swear at Saratov people, and in general it is better not to react to them or distract them: sometimes the locals are not very friendly. Naturally, we do not recommend that you “shine” with big cash. Also, if you see someone very unusual on the street or in transport, you should not look at the person at close range, and even more so point your finger. It is best not to photograph children (without the consent of their parents) and police officers.
