One of the main attractions of Kiev is the Golden Gate. This architectural monument belongs to the XII century and was built in 1164, during the reign of the Kiev prince Yaroslav the Wise. Initially, the townspeople called them the South Gate, which is an integral part of the defensive structures of the southwestern side of Kiev. To strengthen the grandeur and significance of the building, under the leadership of Yaroslav the Wise, a small church was erected in honor of the Orthodox holiday of the Annunciation. Since then, chroniclers and travelers began to call them as the Golden Gate of the City of Kiev.

It was the acquaintance with the Golden Gate that the journey around the city began. So, in 1648, at the Golden Gate, the townspeople met Bohdan Khmelnitsky after a military campaign, and in 1654 – the Russian embassy after the reunification of Ukraine with Russia. According to experts, the gate was 7.5 meters wide, about 25 meters long, and the passage height 12 meters.

Unfortunately, time did not spare the building and travelers of the XVI-XVII centuries noted the dilapidated state of the architectural monument. At different times, restoration and architectural work was carried out at this place. In 1970, a special pavilion was built over the ancient ruins, which protected from destruction and recreated the original appearance of the architectural monument. Nowadays, tourists can see a beautiful tower with battlements 14 meters high, a gate church, brick ornaments typical for ancient Russian buildings of that period, and much more. On the territory of the architectural monument there is a museum of the same name.

Kiev-Pechersk Lavra

One of the first monasteries of Kievan Rus, a revered and important Orthodox shrine. The monastery is included in the UNESCO heritage list. The Lavra was founded in the 11th century by the monk Anthony and his disciple Theodosius. The architectural complex of the Kiev-Pechora Lavra includes several churches, a theological seminary, cave monasteries, the State Library of Ukraine and a museum complex. The relics of God's saints are kept in the Lavra.

Trinity Cathedral

Trukhanov island
