Golden Gate

One of the main attractions of Kiev is the Golden Gate. This architectural monument belongs to the XII century and was built in 1164, during the reign of the Kiev prince Yaroslav the Wise. Initially, the townspeople called them the South Gate, which is an integral part of the defensive structures of the southwestern side of Kiev. To strengthen the grandeur and significance of the building, under the leadership of Yaroslav the Wise, a small church was erected in honor of the Orthodox holiday of the Annunciation. Since then, chroniclers and travelers began to call them as the Golden Gate of the City of Kiev.

It was the acquaintance with the Golden Gate that the journey around the city began. So, in 1648, at the Golden Gate, the townspeople met Bohdan Khmelnitsky after a military campaign, and in 1654 – the Russian embassy after the reunification of Ukraine with Russia. According to experts, the gate was 7.5 meters wide, about 25 meters long, and the passage height 12 meters.

Unfortunately, time did not spare the building and travelers of the XVI-XVII centuries noted the dilapidated state of the architectural monument. At different times, restoration and architectural work was carried out at this place. In 1970, a special pavilion was built over the ancient ruins, which protected from destruction and recreated the original appearance of the architectural monument. Nowadays, tourists can see a beautiful tower with battlements 14 meters high, a gate church, brick ornaments typical for ancient Russian buildings of that period, and much more. On the territory of the architectural monument there is a museum of the same name.

Sophia Cathedral

The best places in Kiev in one day: a tourist's guide. Sights of Kiev what to see

St. Sophia Cathedral, founded by order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise at the site of the victory in the battle with the Pechenegs. The name of the cathedral was chosen in honor of the temple of the same name in Constantinople, and therefore its interior decoration and appearance should not be inferior to the original. At that time, it was the most grandiose and majestic structure in the city.

The original beauty of the cathedral, created in the 9th century, has been preserved to this day. The Cathedral of St. Sophia of Kiev belongs to one of the most important monuments of history and culture. This is the first historical monument in Ukraine, included in the list of specially protected sights of the World Heritage by UNESCO. There are practically no such structures in the world. And although the exterior of the cathedral has undergone several changes, the interior remains completely original.

The main value of the cathedral is its unique mosaics by Byzantine masters. The most famous of them is the six-meter Our Lady of Oranta.

St. Sophia Cathedral is the burial place of the Kiev princes, but only the remains of Yaroslav the Wise and his wife, resting in a carved sarcophagus inside the temple, have survived to this day.

The main sights of Kiev

Walking along Khreshchatyk is the first thing to do in Kiev. On weekends and holidays, the street is closed to cars and becomes a huge pedestrian space. It houses the building of the Kiev City Council, the Main Post Office, the Central Department Store, the Kiev City Hall, the National Philharmonic of Ukraine and other architectural landmarks. Of course, there is no shortage of places for snacks and rest.

As noted above, Kiev is a very green city. It is pleasant to walk on it at any time of the year, but especially, of course, during the flowering period. More than 60 parks are open for residents, where you can spend time with friends, having a picnic or playing outdoor games. The main park is the National Botanical Garden, where people come to admire lilacs and tulips.

An obligatory item in the program is an Orthodox shrine, the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. One of the oldest monasteries in Russia rises on the right bank of the Dnieper. They say that in the early years the monks lived in underground caves, and then, when there was not enough space, they began to erect buildings above the ground. Popular rumor “dug” passages from the Lavra to other monasteries in Kiev and even laid one under the Dnieper; one can only guess whether this is true or not. Also worthy of a visit are the St. Michael's Golden-Upper Cathedral, Theophania Monastery, St. Andrew's Church.

The most unusual architectural landmark can be considered the House with Chimeras, built a century ago. Bizarre sculptures in the form of birds, animals and non-existent living creatures – all these chimeras – make a strong impression on the untrained passer-by.

Dnepr River

The Dnieper flows through three states: Ukraine, Russia, Belarus. The longest channel it has is within Ukraine, where 26 cities are located along the banks.

After the cascade of reservoirs was built, the Dnieper is a series of artificial lakes, which are separated by dams, and canals were dug on both sides of them. More than 70 species of fish are found here – almost all species known in Ukraine.

In Kiev, tourists are invited to go on a fascinating walk along the Dnieper on a motor ship or boat. This flat river has a calm, slow current, a winding bed and picturesque banks.
