St. Stephen’s Cathedral is a symbol of Vienna. It significantly stands out from the general architectural picture of the city, making it even more mysterious.

Construction of the future Austrian Late Gothic monument began in 1137, but fires caused great damage to the Romanesque building, and construction of the current building began in 1359. During the Second World War, the cathedral was badly damaged, but thanks to the efforts of the entire Austrian people, it was successfully restored.

Among the sights of the cathedral are the red marble tombstone of Emperor Frederick III, made in 1467-1513 by Niklas Gerhert van Leyden, the pulpit built by Anton Pilgram around 1500 and his organ base in the northern nave (1513), both works are supplied with a self-portrait of the master.

Equally noteworthy are the Gothic altarpiece from Wiener Neustadt (1447), the tombstone of Prince Eugene of Savoy (1754) and, of course, the richly carved pylons inside and outside the cathedral.

Hofburg palace

The modern Hofburg Palace is the official residence of the President of Austria. During the time of the Empire, the palace was the winter residence of the ruling Habsburg dynasty. Since 1279, the possession of the Habsburgs in Vienna expanded. Various buildings are attached to the Hofburg: Amalie Palace (Amalienburg), chapel (Hofkapelle or Burgkapelle), Natural History Museum, Museum of Art History, Imperial Court Library (Hofbibliothek, now Prunksaal), Treasury (Schatzkammer), National Theater (Burgtheater), riding school (Hofreitschule), stable (Stallburg and Hofstallungen) and Hofburg Congress Center. Among the architects who worked on the Hofburg are such famous names as Filiberto Luchese, Lucas von Hildebrandt, Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach and his son Johann Fischer von Erlach.

It is known that the Babenbergs, the dynasty of rulers of Austria before the Habsburgs, began to rebuild the Hofburg. Buildings from this period were located on the site of the Scottish courtyard. The earliest buildings that have come down to us date back to the 15th century: a Gothic chapel and a treasury. Almost every representative of the Habsburgs, ascending to the throne, began to rebuild and expand their residence. Under Maximilian II, the imperial stables were built, under Charles VII – Amalienburg, under Leopold I – the Leopold’s wing, and so on.

Today you can visit the imperial apartments in the Hofburg, which include the living and office premises of the palace, which have come down to us in almost an exact form. The exposition shows how the monarchs of Austria lived, how they spent their day and how they had fun. The palace houses a museum of Sissi, the Bavarian princess Elisabeth, the first beauty of Europe. The Silver Chamber was opened, where you can get acquainted with heirlooms and tableware of the imperial family.

Historic center of Vienna

The historic center of Vienna or, as it is also called, the Inner City is the central region of the Austrian capital. This is the tourist center of Vienna, on the territory of which the streets of the late 19th century, parks, gardens and whole architectural ensembles with castles and monuments have been preserved, thanks to which in 2001 the Historical Center of Vienna was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Currently, the inner city also serves as the business center of Vienna, on the territory of which hundreds of offices are located and more than one hundred thousand people work daily.

Until 1850, when the borders of Vienna were significantly expanded, the Historic Center was not only its central area, but also completely coincided with the borders of Vienna. Geographically, the Historic Center is bounded by the wide Ringstrasse, built on the site of the demolished walls in the 19th century.

Today, the Ringstrasse is home to most of Vienna’s museums, including the Museum Quarter. The inner city has its own center – it is the cathedral and St. Stephen’s square of the same name. In this popular tourist destination, you can see everything: from the ancient cemetery to living statues and organ grinders.

Plague Column

In the Middle Ages, in the countries of Central Europe, a tradition arose to erect the so-called plague pillar with the Virgin Mary in gratitude for the end of the epidemic. There is such a pillar in Vienna as well. It stands on Gabin Street, in its very heart.

Its opening took place in 1693, and it was installed at the behest of Emperor Leopold I, whose prayer statue is located at the very base of the pillar. And a little higher on the pillar there is an image of a very simple man in the street named Augustine. It is about this that Augustine is sung in the famous Austrian song “Ah, my dear Augustine”, mentioned in the fairy tale “The Swineherd” by H.H. Andersen. According to legend, Augustine was a drunkard. One late night, as usual, he left the tavern and accidentally fell into a pit into which the corpses of plague patients were dumped. In the morning, tearing his eyes open, he tried to get out, began to call for help, and, to prove that he was alive, sang the song “Ah, my dear Augustine.” The song said that everything was lost, that there was no jacket, Augustine was lying in the mud and because of the plague epidemic, Vienna would soon be the same. Despite, that Augustine spent the night next to the plague, he remained absolutely healthy, without even catching a cold. This incident pointed out to the townspeople the importance of disinfection and immortalized the name of the drunkard Augustine.

The baroque column is dedicated to the Holy Trinity. It is decorated with figures of angels.

Untersberg

A mountain near Salzburg – in the Untersberg Nature Park. You can climb the mountain by cable car. Its upper station is located at an altitude of 1853 meters. There is snow, clouds are floating by. The view of the city from the top of the mountain is comparable to the view from the window of an airplane. Several walking paths have been laid from the station along the mountain range. Many tourists find the Schellenberg ice cave on the side of a mountain interesting.

Hundertwasser House

The Hundertwasser House is the embodiment of the idea of building ordinary municipal houses in an atypical way. The architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser himself believed that houses, like people, should have their own characteristics and not be similar to each other. Therefore, the facade of the building has a bright palette of colors and a random arrangement of windows. In accordance with the principles of environmental friendliness, the author of the building used natural materials in the construction, and also borrowed asymmetric, irregular natural forms. The floors in the house are undulating, the walls are plastered unevenly, bushes and trees grow chaotically on stepped terraces and even in the windows. All objects are decorated with ceramic tiles. Despite such a riot of colors and shapes, the house looks very attractive and really pleasing to the eye.

Palaces and chic park ensembles are the pride of Vienna. It is with them that I advise you to start your acquaintance with the capital of Austria. Ideally, if the weather is favorable for you and conducive to walking in the parks. Then I’m sure you will like Vienna even more.

1 Hofburg

The main imperial palace in the very center of Vienna. It houses the imperial treasury of the Habsburg dynasty.

The Hofburg area is huge – 24 hectares. Not everything is open for inspection. Part of the palace houses the official residence of the Austrian president. These are the former apartments of Maria Theresa and her son Joseph II in the Leopold wing.

Hofburg was founded in 1279. Initially, the palace was much smaller in size. Each of the emperors added new buildings to it and increased the territory. Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Classicism – all the architectural styles of past eras can be seen here.

On the vast territory of the Hofburg, there are many different museums and interesting places. I recommend checking out the Imperial Stables and the Spanish Riding School. The stables are home to the Lipizzanian Horses Museum, the Yiana, a white horse with strong legs, a lush mane and tail. The breed was bred in Lipica, Slovenia. Horses of this breed participate in equestrian ballet at the Spanish Riding School.

2 Schönbrunn

Luxurious summer residence of the Habsburgs and one of the most impressive palace and park ensembles in Europe. Included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. There are so many interesting things in Schönbrunn that you can easily spend a whole day here.

The palace in Schönbrunn was built in the style of the Viennese Baroque. Years of construction: 1696-1713 The architect is Fischer von Erlach, he is considered the founder of the Habsburg (Viennese) Baroque.

The park around the palace is very beautiful and worth taking some extra time to walk along its paths. On Christmas Day there is a fair and concerts. On warm spring and summer days, strolling through the blooming park is a pleasure.

Schönbrunn is located about 5 km from the city center, in the Hitzinger district. The most convenient way to get there is by metro (metro station 200 m from the park entrance).

3 Belvedere

The palace complex in the baroque style. Built for Prince Eugene of Savoy in 1714. Architect – Lucas von Hildebrandt. After the death of the prince, Empress Maria Theresia bought the palace, but she rarely visited it, as she preferred to live in her summer residence in Schönbrunn.

The Lower Palace was built several years earlier than the Upper Palace. It housed the prince’s living quarters. Now the palace is temporarily closed (information is available on the website).

An art gallery is located in the halls of the Upper Palace. Back in 1781, by order of the Austrian emperors, one of the world’s first public museums was opened here. Later, the imperial collection of paintings was housed in the Kunstmuseum (art history museum).

Now people come here to look at the world’s largest collection of paintings by Gustav Klimt. His famous “The Kiss” is located right here. In addition to Klimt, the gallery exhibits works by other artists of the Biedermeier style: Oskar Kokoschka, Egon Schiele and others.

Spanish Riding School

The world-famous Spanish Riding School in Vienna was founded back in 1562, when Emperor Maximilian II, wishing to please his courtesans, brought the famous Lipizzan horses to the country. Today it is one of the city’s leading attractions.

On a regular basis, the Winter Riding School, a Baroque building built in 1735 on the grounds of the Hofburg Palace, hosts spectacular shows, during which the incredible heights of horsemanship are demonstrated. Tickets for these shows sell out quickly, so you should book in advance.

Ice Giant Cave Eisriesenwelt

The cave is located at an altitude of 1641 meters, in the Hochkogel mountain. It has many tunnels and mysterious passages. The river that once flowed there has dried up long ago, and nature has created an amazing miracle of nature. Research has been carried out in this cave since 1920, but now the territory is intended for tourists. Funiculars deliver travelers to the cave.

The ticket price is 19 euros. Working hours: from 10:00 to 19:00.

The volume of ice build-ups on the walls and vaults of the cave exceeds 30 thousand cubic meters.

Kreuzenstein

This ancient castle, 266 meters high, is erected on a cliff. There is a beautiful view of the Danube River from there. The museum exhibits old edged weapons and other amazing exhibits. Translated from Austrian Kreuzenstein means “stone cross”. In 1645 it was blown up by the Swedes and stood in ruins for a long time. The landmark was restored only in 1974. This was done by the architect Karl Kaiser Gandolfo.

Salzburg Old Town

The narrow streets of the city are striking in their beauty. It is not for nothing that this popular tourist destination is included in the UNESCO heritage list. Many styles of architecture are represented here – Baroque, Renaissance, Romanticism. Some of the main objects for sightseeing are the Salzburg Cathedral, the house where Mozart was born and lived, and the Hohensalzburg fortress, located in the cliffs of the mountains. Authentic cafes with bright and colorful signs are also praised.

Nordkettenbahn cable car

Located in the city of Innsbruck. The funicular takes everyone to the Hafelekar mountain peak with a height of 2256 meters. The cable car ride from the city center takes 20 minutes. The route passes through several stations, some of them are made in the form of glaciers. From the top of the mountain there is a view of the snow-capped mountain landscapes, the Inn valley and the city of Innsbruck itself. The cable car is open all year round.

Wachau cultural landscape

A section of the valley located between the towns of Melk and Krems. Included in the list of sites protected by UNESCO, thanks to the many monuments of history, archeology and culture. The valley has preserved the unique traditions of winemaking and fruit growing. Dachstein mountain range

Herberstein Castle

Semmering Railway

The world’s first railroad in the mountains. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The oldest section of the road, 42 km long, was built in 1848-1854. Due to the complexity of the relief, the builders had to build more than 100 stone bridges, 16 viaducts, and cut 14 tunnels. There is a picturesque mountainous area around the road. Neusiedlersee-Seewinkel National Park

What else is Austria famous for? This unique reserve, covering an area of 35 thousand hectares, was created in 1932. It is distinguished by a variety of landscapes, among which there are meadows, Central European steppes and reed beds.

Pastere Glacier

St. Peter’s Church (Vienna)

A church with stately Baroque architecture. It hosts daily organ music concerts, with free admission to the daytime concerts. The inside of the church is decorated with marble. The stucco molding is decorated with gold and silver. The monastery depicts the Holy Trinity, to which the construction of the church is dedicated, as well as the Face of the Queen of Heaven. Museum of art history

New town hall

Looking at this imposing structure, it is difficult to say that there are only three floors. The building in the Gothic style almost completely burned down in 1650, after reconstruction a fire destroyed the town hall again in 1700. This happened on the very day that Emperor Leopold was crowned. Despite the bad fate, the building was quickly restored, and for several centuries the city council has been sitting there. Bin House Ossuary

Lindwurm fountain

The fountain is a graphic representation of an ancient myth. There is a legend that says that in ancient times the inhabitants of Austria were kept in fear by a dragon, which every year kidnapped young girls, but once it was overpowered by a knight. The fountain was installed exactly at the place where the duel took place. In support of this myth, historians claim that the remains of an unknown creature were once found in this place. The same dragon is depicted on the coat of arms of the city of Klagenfurt.

Durnstein

The imagination is striking with an abundance of buildings erected in different architectural styles. The world’s largest ice cave, Eisreisenwelt, is located near Salzburg. For tourists, a 1 km route is available. A cable car leads to the cave, you can get there by car and by train, then walk a little.

The natural creation is located in the Hohen Tauern park, flows into the Krimmler-Ache river. It is impossible to take your eyes off the beauty of the waterfall and the splashes shimmering in the sun. The area is somewhat reminiscent of Swiss landscapes, especially in good weather.

While you are getting to this unique natural phenomenon, we advise you to slow down on the Autobahn (110 km / h limit) and enjoy the beauty of the places. By the way, the roads are ideal here. The neatness of small villages, such as the Salzach Valley, will be especially impressive.

When visiting the valley, be sure to stock up on warm clothes and waterproof jackets. Be prepared for physical activity, it will take a long time to climb to the observation deck.

Museum quarter

The MuseumsQuartier is a remarkable complex of museums, cafes, restaurants and bars, housed according to a project by Fischer von Erlach, inside the former imperial stables. This is the place where the cultural life of Vienna is in full swing – people come here to hang out, meet friends or unfamiliar but interesting people.

Imperial crypt in the Church of the Capuchins

The Vienna Capuchin Church, dedicated to the Virgin of the Angels, is known throughout the country for the Imperial Crypt located in it, which contains the remains of 145 members of the Habsburg family. Almost all Austrian emperors since 1633 are buried here. The nine burials are arranged in chronological order, which allows tracing the evolution of taste, at least in the burials.

One of the main attractions of this place is the Crypt of the Founders – the final resting place of Emperor Matthew, who died in 1619, and his wife, Empress Anna, who died a year earlier.

Equally interesting is the tombstone of the grave of Empress Maria Theresa, who died in 1780, and her husband Franz I, which is a double sarcophagus in the Rococo style.
