How effective are makeup fixative sprays?

Fixative sprays – pampering and a great myth or an effective way to prolong the durability of makeup? Can they clog pores and do they dry out the skin? We are happy to answer these and other questions regarding the most discussed cosmetic product.

Let's start with the basics: what is a fixing spray? In the classical sense, this is a light facial mist containing water and alcohol, as well as several caring ingredients (such as glycerin and niacinamide). Some manufacturers include powder particles and their exclusive complexes in the formulas, the compositions of which are more reminiscent of the periodic table. Hence, there are so many questions about the safety of this cosmetic product.

“Fixative sprays will completely change the way you think about makeup," says Emmy-nominated celebrity makeup artist Gloria Elias-Foyer, who has worked with Kelly Clarkson, Alessandra Ambrosio and Emily Ratajkowski. “They noticeably extend its lifespan.” The product should be applied after all makeup has already been done, or, conversely, use it “before” as a primer. “If I need makeup to be waterproof, I spray it after every step of makeup (base, eye shadow, blush, powder, etc.),” continues Elias-Foye. 

“A setting spray is perfect for events like a wedding or a summer pool party,” says celebrity makeup artist Mia Young, who has Cara Delevingne among her clients. The secret of the formula, according to her, lies in the special combination of ingredients.

Who suits?

As we have already said, most fixing sprays are based on alcohol, which can really dry the skin and provoke inflammation. “Keep in mind that a makeup setting spray is not suitable for everyday use, the quantity also matters. A few puffs will be more than enough,” continues Mia Young. However, there are sprays that are suitable for all skin types, including sensitive ones. 

Safe analogues

The most versatile fixatives are often categorized as moisturizing sprays. The so-called mists and hazes contain plant extracts and minerals (eg green tea and rose quartz powder) instead of a complex of chemical ingredients. You can calculate them by the labels all skin types (suitable for all skin types) and alcohol-free (without alcohol). “But keep in mind that alcohol sprays are more effective. They have a stronger grasping power,” warns makeup artist Gloria Elias-Foye. Therefore, if you decide to use the classics, moisturize your skin well beforehand.
