The easy way to scan documents and photos in OS X

Bottom Image Capture has a panel with basic settings, in which you select the folder where to save the result and paper size, for example A4. It remains to click the Scan button and the document scanned in color will appear on the desktop. The whole operation takes a few seconds and is almost completely automated, but if you need to do something special, you need to use an advanced method.

Advanced way to scan documents and photos in OS X

By clicking the button in more detail, a panel will be displayed where you can select many useful parameters: image type, resolution, selection of scan areas, image format and correction.

Scan Parameter Settings

Image type. This parameter is needed in order to be able to choose whether the result will be color or black and white. If you are scanning documents, black and white may be preferred. There is also a mode called “text”, but it is quite crude and the result is only suitable for very primitive sketches.

Permission. This parameter is responsible for the number of points per unit area. Simply put: the higher the resolution, the larger the scanned image and the more detail it contains. When scanning documents, 100-300 DPI will be sufficient. Higher resolution will be useful when scanning photos.

Selection of scan areas. By default, the application will scan the entire surface of the scanner and save the result as a single file. Suppose that you have several pieces of paper or objects on your scanner at once, this parameter allows you to select them in separate areas, which will be saved in separate graphic files.

Format. If you need to get a special type of file at the output, for example, JPEG, PGN, TIFF, then this can be configured in this paragraph.

Image correction. This item allows you to edit the brightness, contrast, color of the picture at once, so that later you do not need to change it in a graphics editor.

Connecting / checking the scanner

Establish an EPSON Scan connection and check if the scanner is working.

Notes (edit)

This feature is not available for all printers and may be disabled.

Double-click: Macintosh HD, Applications, Utilities, then EPSON Scan Settings.

Notes (edit)

If the scanner is listed but cannot be selected immediately after the EPSON Scan Settings window appears, wait for the search to end.

After confirming that the printer is selected, click the Network button , then Add.

Enter the Scanner Name and wait for the search to finish.

Click the IP address of the printer, then click ‘ OK.

Notes (edit)

If the address does not appear, check the connection and click the Retry button or the Enter address button, then enter the IP address directly. Entering the IP address directly turns off the automatic address tracking function.

Select your scanner, then click the Test button .

Verify that the message The connection test was successful appears and that the scanner name is displayed, then click OK.

Scanning a document from printing devices

This is the first and easiest scanning method. Navigate to the Printers menu located in System Preferences. An image of the printer appears, indicating print and scan. You need to click on it and a pop-up window will appear with the device that is installed on the computer for scanning.

At the top of this window, open two options: printers and scanners. Select SCAN. When you have entered the scanner tab, click on Open Scanner, a window will open with digitizing the document on the scanner’s mirror. On the right side of the menu, options will appear to apply the settings of the scanned document, such as color, the type of document where you want to save it, etc.

Scan with MAC Preview Application

This option is faster and less specific in options. With it, you can scan a document, but with fewer options for document settings. The first thing to do is go into apps and select the preview option.

A new window will open that corresponds to the preview. In the upper left corner of the window, click on the FILE option and then Import from Scanner. You will need to select the hardware that is installed for scanning. Remember that the document must be positioned on the mirror of the printer or scanner. Immediately click and the device will begin the process of digitizing the document on the scanner glass.

The scanned document will be displayed in a preview. As in the first step, we can choose the options to apply the parameters of the scanned document, such as color, the type of document where you want to save it, etc. Continuing the method for scanning by shooting.

Scanning from your printer to your Mac just got easier

The most reliable way to scan a document on macOS is with the preinstalled Image Capture software. Image capturing also has the advantage of being simple and easy to use, making it ideal for periodic scans and those less confident in their technical knowledge.

How to scan a document on Mac using Image Capture

  1. Open Image Capture. You can find the application at / Applications / Image Capture.app on your Mac, or enter the name in Spotlight of Finder.

  2. Select your scanner in the panel on the left. If you don’t see your scanner, click Share on the left to open shared devices.

If your scanner doesn’t appear at all, please reinstall the scanner first and see if it appears. Otherwise, you may need to restart your printing system before manually reinstalling the printer or scanner on your Mac. Also make sure you have all the required software or drivers from the scanner manufacturer downloaded and installed.

  3. Capturing an image will automatically warm up the scanner. If you are using a flatbed scanner, the app will also perform a quick overview scan. This is just a quick preview, not your finished scan.

    To insert a selection field:

    1. Click on the scanning area not surrounded by a frame.
    2. Click and drag to create a bounding box around the object you want to scan.
    3. Repeat as many times as necessary to select all of your objects.

If you only need one scan, you can drag the anchors onto the existing selection box to resize it.

  4. Select the correct scan options in the rightmost pane. Most importantly, use the Scan To drop-down list to select the location where your scan will be saved. The default option is Desktop.

  5. Click Scan to start scanning.

  6. When the scan is complete, you will find the scanned file saved in the previously specified location.

  7. Once the scanning head is back in place, open the scanner and remove the document. If you set up PDFs to be merged into one document, the following scans will be attached to the end of the generated PDF.

Mac Scan Options in Image Capture

  • View. Select Color, Black & White, or Text. Changing this setting will update the overview scan to reflect your choice. If your scanner is correctly calibrated, the colors should be very similar to the original document.
  • Permission. Set DPI or dots per inch for scanning. Each DPI point represents one pixel. The higher the DPI, the more pixels there are per square inch.

300 to 240 are sufficient resolutions for typical documents. Higher DPI values should be reserved for documents that will receive higher resolutions, such as photographs.

  • Size. Set the size of the selection box in inches.
  • Angle of rotation. Rotates the selection box clockwise by the specified number of degrees.
  • Automatic selection. When you scan an overview, the image capture software automatically detects the edges of the document and places a selection box around them. If that doesn’t work correctly, you can adjust your settings here.
    • Identify the individual elements. Finds multiple items in the scan stock. Each item gets its own select box and its own file.
    • Define Inbox: Will place one box in which all your documents will be placed. They will all be scanned at the same time in one file.
  • Scan to. Shows where the scanned file will be saved. By default, scans will be saved to your desktop.
  • Format: Set the scan file format. PDF is best for documents or a combination of text and images. JPG or TIFF is best for photographs. If you’re not sure which to choose, PDF will always work. PDF can be easily converted to JPG later.

If you choose PDF, you will see a checkbox for Combine into one document. This option combines all your scans into one multi-page PDF. If you forget to check this box, PDFs can also be merged in preview after scanning is complete.

  • Image correction. If your scanner supports it, you will see the Image Adjustment options here. Change the dropdown from Automatic to Manual to display adjustment sliders for brightness, hue, temperature, and saturation. The histogram above the sliders will change as you make corrections.
