“Legend No. 17” (2012) 6+

Already firmly rooted in American cinema, the wave of bypokups swept over Russian cinema in the 2010s. Following the biographies of Vysotsky and Poddubny, a film about the Soviet hockey star Valeria Kharlamov appeared, tailored according to strong Hollywood patterns – ups alternate with downs, and passions boil with genuine power that does not subside until the final frame. The drive of “Legends No. 17” will be enough for a dozen of such films, and this was felt by the audience, who provided the film with an unprecedented box office for a domestic film product.

“Bitterly!” (2013) 16+

A hilarious and at the same time sincere picture about a senseless and merciless wedding in Gelendzhik can rightfully be considered a new national comedy – the debut of director Zhora Kryzhovnikov has already been compared with Gaidai's films and the landmark Peculiarities of the National Hunt. Witty jokes and heroes with their merits and demerits turned the film into a real encyclopedia of Russian life, which is both bitter and joyful to study. Despite the radical approach to depicting reality, that is, all the “crap”, the film is not devoid of authenticity, a healthy portion of cynicism and sharp humor. Cinematographers have not been able to mix such a cocktail in cinema for quite some time.

A still from the movie “Walk, Vasya!”

It happens that you blurt out something without thinking, and then you don't know how to get out. The provincial Mitya who settled in the capital found himself in approximately the same situation: he accidentally proposed to the girl, and her father already sets the date of the wedding. Everything is fine, but Mitya already has an official wife. There is nothing between them for a long time, it remains only to divorce quietly so that new relatives do not learn about the dark past of the future son-in-law.

The end result is a funky comedy with memorable dialogues, and in the characters you will probably recognize someone from your acquaintances. If you don't expect anything good from the phrase “Russian comedy”, “Take a walk, Vasya!” will be a pleasant discovery.

“Dislike” (2017) 18+

Perfect in all respects, Andrei Zvyagintsev's drama is imbued with an atmosphere of desperate hopelessness, which the director knows how to transfer to the screen like no other. This is a story about a typical Russian family, in which the spouses move further and further from each other every day. Nobody gets love here, not even his son Alyosha, who, feeling the indifference of his father and mother, runs away from home. “Dislike” turned out to be the most emotional work of Zvyagintsev, who brutally squeezes the audience's heart into a fist and does not let go until the final credits. The film received international success, a prize in Cannes and nominations for an Oscar and Golden Globe.

Dovlatov (2018) 16+

Dovlatov's prose always inspired Alexei German Jr., but he did not want to film it. The director decided to shoot a biopic about the writer himself and capture on the screen a few days from his life in Soviet Leningrad. Herman's wife Elena Okopnaya worked to recreate the atmosphere of the Northern capital, and her city turned out to be magical, authentic, transferring to the past. Sad Dovlatov wanders along its streets, pounding the thresholds of publishing houses and getting rejection after rejection. And during breaks, talented friends and colleagues in the literary workshop visit, drinking and reflecting. The chamber drama was broadcasted for only four days, but during this time it raised more than 100 million rubles, becoming the director's highest-grossing film.
