Gravity Falls (“Gravity Falls”), USA, 2012 – 2016

Gravity Falls was very difficult to miss – when the show first started, it very quickly generated a huge wave of hype, from which it was hard to hide. However, I held out for quite a long time – approximately until the end of the first season – but then I could not resist and also decided to join. In the end, the only thing that I seriously regretted later was that I did not have the patience and did not wait for the release of the second season. Watching one episode once a month was unbearably difficult.

The problem was that the show was initially shown “as usual” – once a week, and then there were delays. And if in total the first season was shown “only” for one year, then the second one stretched out for the whole year and a half, and the fans were waiting for the last episode for several months. Yes, of course, quality is above all – but every missed week, I’m sure the fans of the series, with quiet, kind words, remembered Alex Hirsch and his desire to do everything right.

To understand why the fans generally behaved this way, waiting for several months of the cherished episodes, it is worthwhile to briefly tell what kind of “Gravity Falls” it is in general. At first glance, this is a typical “Disney” project – a very soft palette of colors, no hot topics for you, smiles from ear to ear and other indispensable attributes of such shows. And at first, GF is really successful at pretending to be a simple cartoon series. And then all the crazy devilry starts happening.

Well, that is not so. The devilry has been going on in the series since the first season – here you have a mysterious diary with a six-fingered palm on the cover, and gnomes puking a rainbow, and a local version of the Loch Ness monster … but at first it does not get out of hand. Well, yes, a light raid fool – why not?

However, towards the end of the first season, the series changes beyond recognition. Yes, this is still a rather light humorous show, however, a cross-cutting plot looms in it, which makes it clear that not everything in Gravity Falls is so simple. Quite unexpected variables are added to the story, due to which fans between seasons diligently made up various kinds of conspiracy theories, one more delusional than the other. The theories, of course, turned out to be much less crazy than the real scenario of the second season, but this, in general, is not surprising.

In many ways, of course, the characters also contributed to the success of the series. In addition to the characters of the very third plan, everything turned out to be worked out, and their images Hirsch and the team use both seasons very cool. Moreover, the characters of the characters seem to be for the most part – the same set of stamps. Here you have a reckless girl (Mabel), an overly serious guy who often gets nuts because of his own mind (Dipper), and a distant relative leading a double life (Stan), and a shirt-guy who loves friends (Zus). However, this does not interfere with the series, on the contrary – the team of creators squeezed the maximum out of these cliches, contriving to make the characters uninteresting at first glance bright and original.

Much of this is due to the same scenario. Over the course of forty episodes (two seasons of twenty episodes each), the heroes always find themselves in various non-standard situations that reveal them from one side or the other. This makes it very interesting to follow the characters, and their antics do not seem boring and stupid.

If you ask me to draw an analogy with some adventure series, then I will say this – “Gravity Falls” is a bit like “Twin Peaks”, just with an eye not on an adult, but on a teenage audience. The creation of Alex Hirsch is much brighter and, in general, more optimistic than the series by David Lynch, but the mysterious atmosphere, various mystical devilry and the “smack of a detective” these works are in some way related.

Just don’t think Falls is a “kiddie” series since I’ve called it more teenage than Twin Peaks. No, this is not at all true. Yes, he is more flamboyant, silly and reckless. On the whole, it is much lighter than Lynch’s brain-absorbing creativity. But this does not make the series not interesting for people who have crossed a certain age threshold. On the contrary, it will allow you to relax and laugh enough without feeling like a fool.

In a word, if you still haven’t joined, I highly recommend it. Forty episodes of excellent humor and a mystical atmosphere await you, very competently filmed and presented. Yes, there will be no third season … although maybe twenty years later Hirsch will still please old fans and shoot another season or two, like Lynch? I would like to believe.

Daredevil (“Daredevil”), USA, 2015 – today

The first adult superhero series appeared at a very difficult time for superhero television – in 2015. The CW channel has already managed to launch a whole industry of nasty soap-opera costumed clownery with “Arrow” and “Flash”, on Disney ABC created by Joss Whedon “Agents of SHIELD” continued once a week to offend the intellect of viewers with cartoon frivolity of action, the mediocrity of the dialogues written by Whedon’s brother and daughter-in-law and the absurdity of plot structures. And suddenly on the Netflix platform, like a bolt from the blue, 13 episodes of a superhero project appeared at once, which was not much filmed as a real big (and maybe even an author’s) movie, and also shocked with the depth and overall quality of the script.

Moreover, the main character there was extremely dubious. This is a blind lawyer from New York, whose main superpower is the ability to very quickly beat people on the head with a truncheon, and the area of action is limited to Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen. That is, in terms of superhuman skills and involvement in global issues of the eternal struggle between good and evil, Matt Murdoch is no different from your local gopnik. The 2003 film Daredevil with Ben Affleck convincingly demonstrated how ridiculous a grown man looks in a red latex suit and a helmet with horns.

Moreover, the first two episodes of the series written by Drew Goddard confirmed the worst suspicions – a stamp on the stamp, the same hackneyed story of the hero’s origin (only this time without a suit) and an idiotic line about the Russian mafia and the kidnapped boy whom Murdcock first tries to save and then saves (awesome unpredictable course of events). Actually, you can watch all this only because of the 5-minute battle scene, filmed in one take in the spirit of “Raids” and “Oldboy”. She was impressive on her own, but in no way atoned for the ringing plot emptiness of the series.

But then we got very lucky: Goddard left the project, and Stephen S. DeKnight became the main writer and producer of “Daredevil” after the first two episodes. Like Goddard, DeKnight started out on Buffy and Angel by Joss Whedon, but over the past ten-odd years has evolved into an interesting original author, who turned all the ideas about historical series with the magnificent first season of Spartacus: Blood and Sand and Spin -off “Spartacus: Gods of the Arena”.

And under the leadership of DeKnight, Daredevil blossomed into the most serious, darkest crime series with incredibly brutal fights and murders. It was the general super-seriousness of the mess that made us so worried about Matt, Karen and Foggy – DeKnight knows how to put his heroes in a desperate situation, make them hang on the edge of the abyss, clinging to the edge with his nails, whether it’s Spartacus in a gladiator’s pit or Daredevil, who challenged the entire corrupt New Police -York.

Well, and most importantly, an absolutely amazing villain, Wilson Fisk, played by Vincent D’Onofrio, who does nothing threatening for the first couple of episodes, was very skillfully and timely introduced into the series. Attends exhibitions, looks after women … The character’s heavy weight conveys the reaction of other characters, who prefer to commit suicide in a very brutal manner, rather than cause Kingpin’s displeasure.

Under the pen of DeKnight and his writing team, an ordinary gangster from New York has turned into the best on-screen villain in Marvel – smart, charming, calculating, capable of thinking outside the box, but not hitting overcomplicated “villainous plans.” Moreover, with all his charm, Kingpin remains a complete psychopath with a blood-curdling history of origin, bloody hallucinations and the ability to personally tear any opponent to pieces. In the second season, Matt and Fisk were joined by John Bernthal’s Punisher – the best supporting anti-hero in Marvel history, who later got his own (albeit not superhero) great series.

Overall, Netflix’s superhero universe – with one very notable exception, which we’ll talk about further upstream – doesn’t deserve a show like the first season and a half of Daredevil. After the shock of the first season of Daredevil, you expect other shows to be just as high-quality, and instead you end up with ninja and Electra trash like the second half of season two.

What will happen if enough talented people get together, think, and decide to make a “Bondiana”, but in a parody key? It will be Kingsman: The Secret Service. Well, what will happen if the authors absorb various alcohol-containing substances in liters at the same time, have not slept for a week and at the same time want to kick the ass of the cycle about the British special agent, which is already disgusted with everyone? Right. It will turn out to be “Special Agent Archer”.

“Archer” is generally a very specific show – about half of my friends, who tried to watch it, spat, scared curses and turned them off, while the rest sat all the way, getting high from each of the episodes. This is, in general, an understandable reaction – to call “Archer” a kind, normal, or at least an adequate series, the language does not turn in principle. This is a very vulgar, immoral show, the creators of which seem to enjoy themselves from what kind of game they create.

The creators of “Archer” manage, for example, in one character – actually in Archer – to combine the qualities of the most dangerous special agent on the planet, from one view of which Bond would quietly merge into the sewers, a mama’s son and a reference idiot. And then, over a very large number of episodes, gradually show the evolution of the character. Archer and his entourage are changing very, very little (well, except for Cheryl, who can be wedged almost several times in a series). And it turns out the same!

Of the ten planned seasons so far, only eight have come out, however, there is already enough where to turn around. The series begins with one big (and very caustic) parody of “Bond” and other works about super-spies, but gradually the authors begin to dig deeper. Geopolitics, actions of the “greens”, the North Korean threat, the Cold War between the USSR and the USA, drug trafficking and all that kind of stuff are involved. Since the fifth season, however, the authors got tired of messing around with Bond and derivatives, so they outplayed everything dramatically, making Archer and his comrades drug dealers. And then again by special agents. And then the employees of a private detective agency. In short, the life of Archer Sterling and his colleagues is very, very busy.

The jokes from the series, in general, match everything else. Half – below the belt, half – at the level of this very belt. The authors are not shy in principle, and the object for jokes here is anything – from the constant concern of Cheryl, to the too big hands of Aisha Tai … oops, Lana Kane’s agent. The characters are also not far behind. In addition to Archer himself, the series has a mad scientist who is a clone of Adolf Hitler, an accountant who is too smart (and therefore often gets in various parts of the body), a homosexual priest with cybernetic implants, a Soviet Terminator and a huge number of characters written in approximately the same spirit.

But yes, it is obvious that “Archer” will not go to everyone. Someone will be cut off by the vulgarity and outright madness of the series, someone will be repulsed by the way it is all drawn, someone will not like the way the series mercilessly passes through absolutely all people without making any discounts. But as for me, this is precisely in “Archer” and catchy. Madness, bawdy humor, tons of references and banter over movies about spies who constantly go around with extremely serious faces.

The best British youth sitcom lasted only 2 seasons of 7 episodes – but that was enough for Spaced to become the most important phenomenon of geek culture in the early 2000s. The series was released at the turn of the millennia, when this very geek culture was breaking down and rebuilding, globalizing under the general influence of the Internet (I think it would be more appropriate to write this word with a capital letter here).

In the USA, in the UK, and in Russia, young people watched and revisited the same films and TV series, played the same video games, read the same books and comics, went to very similar conventions, discussed them in a similar way offline and online. As a result, a kind of lingua franca was formed – Esperanto for geeks, where the words “Star Trek”, Star Wars and “X-files” successfully overcome the difference in the cultural and historical background. Spaced speaks to the viewer in this universal language.

Spaced is based on a very simple idea for a good romantic sitcom: in order to rent a comfortable apartment cheaply, a barely familiar guy and girl have to pretend to be a couple in love. The situation is complicated by relationships with real guys and girls (even former ones), two attractive young people have to live under the same roof, dispensing with sex and denying the growing affection for each other.

But in the interpretation of director Edgar Wright and screenwriters Simon Pegg and Jessica Hines (who played the main roles), this romantic sitcom from the lives of young Londoners turned into a real encyclopedia of geek hobbies: science fiction, zombies, robbery films, jokes about Gillian Anderson, The Matrix, “Apocalypse Now” and, of course, “The Phantom Menace”, after which one of the main characters solemnly burned all his “Merch” on “Star Wars” at the ceremonial bonfire.

I am sure that in real life at that time one of your acquaintances or friends did the same. Both Wright and Pegg grew up watching the same American videotaped films and American TV shows on local television that we do – only without translation.

Spaced’s plots show the beginnings of future full-length films by Wright and Pegg: one of the episodes, titled Art, tells about the insanity of the hero Pegg for Resident Evil 2 and is a shortened version of “Zombie Called Sean.” Parodying war films and police action films, the Battles series is entirely devoted to paintball, and this uncomplicated entertainment demonstrates the trademark musical editing and growing directorial abilities of the future author of “The Type of Cool Cop” and “Kid on the Drive”. Nick Frost plays almost the same role as in the “Blood and Ice Cream” trilogy – a fat friend of the protagonist, this time obsessed with all kinds of military clique.

The series is beautiful in itself, apart from all the rest of the work of these wonderful directors and screenwriters. I preferred Spaced to the cult British situational comedies Black Books and The IT Crowd because humor is more universal here, and sitcom’s sexual tension is much better combined with topical (even in 2018, in the era of sequels, remakes and reboots) geek themes.

This proportion is very difficult to maintain correctly, as evidenced by the failure of the American remake of Spaced, which did not go beyond the disgusting pilot stage. By the way, in the original, the name Spaced is much thinner than our “Fuckers” and refers not only to drugs, space and the general idiotism of the characters, but also to the fact that our hero and heroine have to share one room.
