For Your Eyes Only: Films with Outstanding Visual Style
On the occasion of the release of Sin City 2, KinoPoisk recalls other films of recent years that boast outstanding visuals and interesting stylistic solutions – from Hero and Avatar to Inferno and Tree of Life.
“Hero”
Director Zhang Yimou, 2002
Together with Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and The House of Flying Daggers by the same Zhang Yimou, Hero sparked a new wave of love for Asian cinema in the West. The historical epic amazes with its large-scale scenes, color palette, battle choreography, costumes, sets and impeccable craftsmanship of the outstanding Australian cameraman Christopher Doyle. He has worked with Jim Jarmusch, Gus Van Sant and Barry Levinson, but is best known for his collaborations with Asian filmmakers, in particular with Wong Kar-Wai. And if in the paintings of Kar-Wai Doyle proved that he had no equal in staging intimate and sensual scenes, then in “Hero” he confirmed that he was equally well given majestic scenes.
“Aquatic life”
Directed by Wes Anderson, 2004
This place could have been any of the films of the indefatigable dreamer Wes Anderson, but the Aquatic Life dedicated to Jacques-Yves Cousteau is perhaps his most daring and visually extraordinary film. And also the longest and most expensive, but failed at the box office and coolly received by critics. And behind the whimsical façade of Anderson's most underrated work lies a host of eye-catching inventions characteristic of his unique toy style. What are the marine life created with the help of stop motion animation or the Belafonte ship built in section ?
Pan's Labyrinth
Directed by Guillermo del Toro, 2006
In Chronos, Devil's Ridge and Hellboy, Guillermo del Toro has already shown the world what his boundless imagination is capable of. But a real triumph for the Mexican director was Pan's Labyrinth, with its visual metaphors and rich details – animated sketches from his albums. This dark fairy tale, captivating with its style and emotions, shook the genre, and del Toro proved that he, like no one else, is capable of creating amazing, unique worlds in cinema. It is quite logical that it was him that Peter Jackson wanted to see in the director's chair of The Hobbit. Guillermo del Toro does not please the audience with new works as often as one would like, but the vision of the master also influences his production projects, which are also worth paying attention to.
“Blur”
Director Richard Linklater, 2006
The 12-year-long project “Adolescence”, which has recently amazed the entire cinematic community, is far from the only daring experiment of the American director Richard Linklater. In the mid-2000s, he decided to bring one of Philip K. Dick's most surreal novels to the big screen and do it in a befitting manner. Blurred with Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey Jr., Woody Harrelson and Winona Ryder used the technique of rotoscoping – creating animation by outlining live footage. Filming with the actors was completed in just 23 days, but work on the animation was carried out for another year and a half.
Outland
Directed by Tarsem Singh, 2006
The stunningly beautiful independent fantasy of the Indian visionary Tarsem is a bright, surreal and touching fairy tale that is conveyed to the viewer by the words of a crippled stuntman (Lee Pace) and the imagination of young Alexandria (Katinka Untaru). “Outland” pleases the eye with majestic castles, endless deserts and a rich palette of colors. It would seem that such locations cannot be found in real life. But the most amazing thing is that the film, which was filmed for four years in twenty countries, does not use computer graphics. The film divided critics into two camps, but all agreed on one thing: “Outland” is an outstanding visual work.
“Science of sleep”
Director Michel Gondry, 2006
Even before taking on big-time cinema, French visionary Michel Gondry impressed music lovers with chilling sketches in Bjork, surreal dancing in Daft Punk, and the Chemical Brothers' beats moving in unison. In the full-length format, he received even more scope for creativity, which is clearly visible in the blurring boundaries of fantasy and reality “Science of Sleep” with its cellophane seas, cotton clouds, plush horses and cardboard cities. Later, Gondry staged an equally inventive film adaptation of Boris Vian's “Foam of the Days”, and, perhaps, only his imagination could cope with such a text.
“Fountain”
Director Darren Aronofsky, 2006
Darren Aronofsky was never afraid to go on artistic experiments, just remember “Requiem for a Dream”, where a fish eye lens was used to convey the state of the heroine Ellen Burstyn. He went even further in the parable “The Fountain” with Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz – one of the most beautiful films of recent years. Aronofsky decided to minimize the presence of special effects, so instead of computer graphics, macro photography of the chemical reactions of various elements on miniature saucers was often used. Believe it or not, the most dramatic shots were created with nothing more than curry and a drop of alcohol. All this was done not only because of the limited budget. Aronofsky believed that computer special effects, unlike organic ones, would sooner or later become obsolete.
“Renaissance”
Directed by Christian Volkmann, 2006
Long-term construction (the picture was in production for six whole years) by the French artist and director Christian Wolkmann, who was inspired by American noir and German expressionism. And if the contrasting black-and-white scale with very few gray shadows evokes associations with the “City of Sins”, then it is with the original source, not the film. Volkman's animation tape, like no other work, resembles a graphic novel that has come to life. Despite its almost monochrome, not only the futuristic landscapes of Paris in 2054, but also the heroes look amazingly alive here. The fact is that along with computer animation creators have used motion capture technology (motion capture ), and to the dubbing has managed to attract very famous actors, such as Daniel Craig, Ian Holm and Jonathan Pryce.
“300 Spartans”
Directed by Zach Snyder, 2007
Another screen adaptation of Frank Miller's graphic novel. And again, the style of the master was recreated with the help of abundant use of computer graphics. Storyboarding, Zach Snyder directly borrowed entire pages from Miller's work, later trying to recreate them one by one on the big screen. The resulting picture is really impressive, and Frank Miller admitted that he himself was blown away by it. Subsequent films by Snyder also resemble animated comics, whether it be the stylish adaptation of Alan Moore's The Keepers or the independent fantasy novel Sucker Punch.
“Speed Racer”
Directed by Andy and Lana Wachowski, 2008
The adaptation of the 1960s anime series of the same name has been in development since the early 1990s, and at various times has been associated with the names of Alfonso Cuaron, Gus Van Sant, J.J. Abrams and Johnny Depp, who was assigned to the lead role. As a result, the Wachowskis, who have been big fans of the series since childhood, took on a difficult task. They tried to blur the line between Japanese animation and cinematography, got the latest technology at their disposal and put the actors in a colorful world created entirely on the computer. “Speed Racer” awakens a child in the viewer, but many did not succumb to the charm of the picture and were unhappy. Any other work of Wachowski deserves a mention on this list, be it “The Matrix”, “Cloud Atlas” or the thriller “V for Vendetta” produced by them.
“Inferno”
Director Danny Boyle, 2008
British director Danny Boyle performed in an unusual genre of sci-fi thriller, having at his disposal $ 50 million, which is significantly inferior to most modern blockbusters. However, without fabulous budgets, Peklu managed to surpass other representatives of the genre and show one of the most impressive pictures in cinema in recent years. In Boyle's claustrophobic painting, the monster is not hiding in the dark like Ridley Scott's, but outside. This is the dying sun. Cinematographer Alvin Kühler suggested that the director perform the interior of the spaceship in gray, blue and green tones and abandon orange, red or yellow as much as possible in order to create a contrast with the dying star, the remnants of the warmth of which the viewer should feel every time it appears on the screen.
“Entering the Void”
Director Gaspard Noé, 2009
Inspired by the “Tibetan Book of the Dead,” Gaspar Noe's “Entrance to the Void” puts the viewer straight into the soul by the ridiculous accident of the deceased Oscar, which rushes between past, present and future. The picture is almost completely shot from the first person, the only exceptions are flashbacks that are shown to us from behind the hero's shoulders. After all, so often in our memories we see ourselves from the outside. Through the eyes of a young man (or his ghost), we observe walks in the neon night of Tokyo, the dark side of the metropolis with its brothels and underground clubs, and even the effect of drug intoxication, the creation of which, by the way, the director was guided solely by his own experience.
“Avatar”
Director James Cameron, 2009
Believe it or not, just 5 years ago, studio bosses treated 3D as a gamble, believing that the audience would not overpay for the ticket. But James Cameron's dream project, which became the most profitable film in history, made the world love 3D. Cameron and his team of almost nine hundred people, armed with the most powerful computers and the latest technology, managed to achieve photorealistic graphics, blur the line between animation and live filming, revive the planet Pandora and endow it with breathtaking beauty.

How the standard of beauty has changed. Which person is the most handsome?
At different times, tastes for the ideal have changed and modified, but the most beautiful people of all time remained in the memory for a long time. There were times when fullness and curvaceous forms were appreciated. But even in an era when fullness and beauty were synonymous, fullness did not mean vague, but meant that the shapes should be rounded, but clear.
For the Renaissance, an example is Botticelli's muse Simonetta Vespucci. The girl was considered the standard of beauty – at one time she was glorified by poets and artists. Botticelli became one of such artists, as the saying goes, “out of this world”; it was in her that he found zest, beauty, both internal and external. The famous painting “The Birth of Venus” shows the world what criteria of female beauty were in those days – pallor of the skin, long hair, big eyes, soft outlines of the body, delicate facial features.
The most beautiful people in the world. Fragment of the painting “Lady Clare” The Lady Clare, art. John William Waterhouse and Fragment of the painting “The Birth of Venus”, art. Botticelli.
About 100 years ago, thinness began to rule the world. Where it came from and why it came into fashion, no one knows for sure. Some believe that the post-war period, the imposition of the media, the emergence of sexual minorities influenced the situation. Experts believe that the fashion for thin people came from Paris in the 19th century. There is an opinion that what life is, so is the fashion for beauty.
In our time, frank thinness with protruding bones is no longer in vogue. In connection with the increased athleticism of the younger generation and the available information about a healthy lifestyle and proper nutrition, more and more beautiful and less beautiful people are becoming slim, strong and moderately well-fed.
For women, the approximate beauty standard for 2016 is:
- Big eyes
- Long, moderately plucked or even completely natural eyebrows
- High forehead
- Smooth small nose
- Beautifully defined, slightly puffy lips
- Smooth teeth of small size
- Slightly elongated face oval
- Long neck
- Lush hair
- Slim fit body
- Slim waist and pumped up abs
- Beautiful posture and fluidity of movement
- Naturalness, cuteness are in fashion
Male beauty standards go back to ancient Rome. It is enough to look at the sculpture of David or Apollo to understand what traits were appreciated before and what were the most beautiful people on the planet. In men, these are the correct facial features combined with an open gaze and a high forehead, well-developed muscles, and narrow hips.
The most beautiful people in the world. The portrait of a young man by Titian and the statue of David are the work of Michelangelo.
Modern beauty criteria for male beauty are more vague than for women. Let's highlight the main trends:
- Beautiful cut of the eyes
- Elongated face oval
- Medium chin
- High forehead
- Medium nose
- Outlined cheekbones
- Thick long eyebrows
- Wide lips
- Open, charming smile
- Small ears
- Light bristles
- Medium length hair
- Tall and well proportioned, pumped-up body
Men without strong muscles are not as eye-catching as pumped-up men, the beauty of the body, as well as the inner qualities, give out the ideal man – handsome by 100%. Among men in every country there are written beauties, and among women – beauties who win hearts half-turned.
By the way, the most beautiful modern people are like the legendary personalities of the past. The chiseled features of famous models resemble the statue of Nefertiti and the Lady with the Ermine (artist Leonardo da Vinci).

For example, we took the countries that have the most beautiful people. Let's choose from them one man and a woman worthy of your attention.
Ukraine
In Ukraine, the most beautiful people are Olga Malyuk and Sergey Melnik.
The most beautiful people in the world. Ukraine. Olga Malyuk and Sergey Melnik.
Ukrainian beauty was formed on the basis of the southern Slavs (Bulgarians, Serbs, etc.) and the Cossacks. Therefore, among the Ukrainians there are many dark-skinned black-browed beauties and beauties. There are also blondes. In Ukraine, most people have straight noses and a brighter appearance (due to darker eyebrows and hair and larger facial features) than Russians.
Top model, Olga Malyuk stands out from all the rest of the gentle and regular facial features. The waist of the model is 58 centimeters with a height of 172. The girl entered the TOP-100 of the most beautiful women in Ukraine. She has posed for glossy magazines such as Elle, Flair, Votre Beauté and others.
From the male population, the role of a brutal handsome man rightfully belongs to Sergei Melnik, a participant in the Bachelor Show. He impressed everyone with his charm, and even those who are not fond of watching TV shows, stared at him throughout the project. Many are attracted by his expressive sky-colored eyes, an enigmatic smile, and a toned body. The footballer has repeatedly proved his love for the chosen sport, and as it became known, his career comes first, and then personal relationships.
Ukraine, probably, is the very country where the most beautiful ordinary people live. There are most beauties and beauties here.
Russia
The most beautiful people in the world. Russia. Valentina Zelyaeva and Ivan Urgant.
Russian beauty canons are not much different from Ukrainian ones, but the difference can still be traced. A high forehead, a long line of eyebrows, almond-shaped eyes, a pensive gaze, a gentle chin, a straight nose, sensual lips. Among the Russian beauties, there are many beautiful Tatar women and pretty girls with snub noses and round faces. But still, purebred Russian beauty has northern roots – these are long stature, blue or gray eyes, blond hair, very light skin, a slightly snub or straight nose and small lips.
Light tan and blonde hair are encouraged, everything should be natural and makeup should be applied in moderation. For example, you can take the famous model Valentina Zelyaeva, it has sophistication, harmony and sexual sensuality. The girl became the face of Ralph Lauren and posed for famous gloss. Working with the most famous advertising firms and fashion designers, Valentina gained worldwide popularity and has been living in New York for 10 years. The height of the model is 177 centimeters, which makes her legs even longer, and her azure eyes attract her like a magnet.
In Russian men, they value an expressive look and strong hands, but not only this is in the conqueror of millions of women's hearts, whom we will call. This is a well-known personality, presenter and actor – Ivan Urgant. He has not only the beauty of the body and attractive facial features, but also tremendous charisma. The perky gaze of blue eyes, combined with the bright appearance of a brunette, disarms the female part of the population. Handsome and showman Ivan Urgant is also a music producer, winner of multiple awards in television and radio art and, of course, a wonderful actor.
Great Britain
The most beautiful people in the world. Great Britain. Rachel Hurd-Wood and Jude Law There are many beautiful people in the UK too. The standards of female beauty are: a rounded oval face, a small (sometimes even upturned) nose and voluminous voluminous lips. Many British beauties have red hair.
A toned silhouette, slender legs and tanned skin are highly valued. Particular attention is paid to the figure so that she is thin enough, but the girl does not seem emaciated. An example is the beauty of cinema and model Rachel Heard-Wood. This sophisticated beauty with a natural smile and striking eyes resembles an angel. Her gentle, rounded facial contours and natural blush draws even more attention to her. Rachel is known as a young actress – she starred in the films “The Ghost of the Red River” and “Perfume”, and took part in a dozen other films. She played all the roles as naturally as she looks herself.
British men have a special aristocratic beauty – very harmonious facial features, an intelligent and deep look, the hair of many men is slightly curly.
The most handsome young man in Great Britain is undoubtedly Jude Law, a handsome man with a tall and toned figure. Bushy eyebrows and a piercing sly glance add “demonicity” to it, and volumetric lips of the correct shape dilute the severity of the contours and make the image softer. He has a perfect head shape, a high forehead and a sincere smile! Whatever the actor appears before us, he always looks amazing.
Brazil
The most beautiful people in the world. Brazil. Ana Beatriz Barros and Caua Reymond Women's beauty in Brazil is always bright – big eyes framed by thick eyelashes and long eyebrows, pronounced cheekbones, full sensual lips, straight nose and thick wavy hair And the figure should repeat smooth lines guitars.
All these traits are present in the charming model and the most beautiful woman in Brazil – this is Ana Beatriz (one of the Victoria's Secret Angels). Her natural hair color is chestnut, which suggests that not only the facial features of Brazilian women should stand out clearly and brightly. If we consider her figure, we can say that she has not deviated from the clear standards of 90-60-90, while possessing even greater growth than the previous beauties of our rating – more than 180 centimeters. The model represents brands such as Valentino, Versace, Christian Dior and other well-known brands.
Male beauty in Brazil is dark, sexy, tall men with indigenous features (dark eyes and large lips). Moreover, they must have a slender and muscular body. What do you think is the most handsome person in Brazil? Hopefully we won't lose face if we say that this is Kaia Raymond. Son of the sun, this is how his name is translated, the model not only “illuminates” the catwalks, but also became famous as a wonderful actor. It's hard to underestimate his muscular, powerful physique, sly dark eyes, wide smile and stunning tan.
France
The most beautiful people in the world. France. Vincent Cassel and Marion Cotillard
France – a country worthy of attention, because it is very beautiful people live – Marion Cotillard (Marion Cotillard) and Vincent Cassel ( of Vincent Cassel).
France is a country where naturalness and the power of natural beauty are valued. Men love naturalness and pretty features in women. The less makeup the beauty applied, the better. Pale skin and lean physique, natural lip and eyebrow color, anything that emphasizes femininity is considered the standard of beauty. Among the French and French women there are blondes and brunettes, most women have small facial features, and men often have a crooked nose and large eyes.
A striking example of naturalness is such a Frenchwoman as Marion Cotillard, an actress of theater, television and cinema. Gray almond-shaped, slightly protruding eyes, perfect eyebrows, delicate lips, a small nose, dark hair and raised cheekbones – all this attracts and inspires. And the presence of a charming mole on the forehead is a bit like an Indian beauty. The strangeness of the beauty of the peoples of the world
If bandaging your legs and putting on rings around your neck seems like normal things to you, we throw in some more information for thought. So in Ethiopia, both men and women love to scar their bodies. A man with scars is a worthy candidate for husbands, a hunter and a breadwinner. If a woman has scars on her body, then she is beautiful! A woman cuts herself with glass or a knife, then spices the cut with plant sap, resulting in a kind of colored tattoos. At the same time, they consider themselves beautiful and happy people.
In Iran and other Asian countries, women pay special attention to the plastic of the nose and beautifully highlight the eyes. Since the body of the beauty is closed from prying eyes, and the face is almost all open, it is believed that the nose should be chiseled and only of the correct shape, no flaws. Rhinoplasty is not a novelty for these women; on the streets you can see women and girls with patches on their noses.
But these are still flowers in comparison with African countries that are sophisticated in such ways that our women will not even dream in a nightmare. For example, by pulling the earlobes and stretching the lips, women strive for perfection. The ideal wife will be the one whose ears are elongated and hang down to the shoulders, who has stretched lips. Thank God that such traditions were preserved mainly only among black African tribes.
In some countries, for example in Mauritania, the highest “quality” of a bride is still her fullness. And in China, some women still wrap their feet to make them smaller. Other peoples pay special attention to the neck (Thailand), others – to the skin (Japan, Korea). Someone appreciates diminutiveness, someone big growth and an athletic figure, such as the Australians. But we all agree on one thing – beauty should attract, inspire, cause a sincere smile, attract.
