How to replicate a trendy effect on different skin types

Eternal shine or perfect matte? Makeup artists put the question squarely, offering different interpretations of both trends. We refuse to choose, so we have prepared step-by-step instructions for each.

Use a primer

Apply primer every time before putting on makeup. It will even out the surface and prolong the durability of the foundation. When creating matte skin, give preference to silicone bases – in addition to their main functions, they also absorb the remnants of sebum. 

Choose the right formula

For those with oily skin, a non-comedogenic, oil-free foundation will do the trick. Those with dry or dehydrated skin should look to weightless fluids and water-based tints. “A light texture is less likely to look like a butter pancake, even if you're new to makeup," says makeup artist Mary Irwin, founder of The Makeup Standard. 

Avoid highlighter and glitter

It is not difficult to guess that matte makeup involves a complete rejection of frilly sparkles and cosmic radiance. But this does not mean at all that the skin should not glow from the inside. For a natural glow without a hint of oiliness, use a finishing powder. Its light-reflecting pigments simultaneously mattify the skin and achieve a uniform complexion.

Carry powder and matting wipes with you

Even the matting foundation begins to slowly slide off the face by lunchtime. But you can help keep it in place by periodically powdering it. “Be sure to focus on the T-zone and under-eye area, which tend to look the most depleted during the day,” says Min Min Ma, a celebrity makeup artist who has worked with Leonardo DiCaprio and Mia Wasikowska. If carrying a compact is not an option, look for matting wipes containing an absorbent powder (talc, kaolin, zinc oxide, or titanium dioxide).

Apply the product with gentle patting movements only where needed. “Focus on the center of the face, where the most redness and age spots are located,” continues Mary Irwin. Then spread a light tint fluid over the entire face and, if you have very oily skin, use translucent powder to finish.

Don't skimp on highlighter

As Rihanna says, when applying highlighter, the main thing is not to be afraid! Play with textures and shades depending on the effect you want to achieve. Here are some of the most relevant schemes for creating glossy skin:

• Dolphin skin – feel free to layer shining textures on top of each other (liquid ones are more suitable for this). The main areas for applying the highlighter are the cheekbones, bridge of the nose and temples.

• Gym skin is the minimum highlighter. We achieve the effect of glowing skin exclusively with the help of tonal products.

• Yoga skin is a classic scheme for applying a highlighter (it is better to use powder): bridge of the nose, cheekbones, a check mark above the upper lip and areas under the eyebrows.
