To go on my first trip, I saved up. I just saved a certain amount after receiving each salary, and lived with the remaining money without frills. No going to the movies – you can watch at home, no fitness club – there are also dumbbells at home, practically no cafes – I can cook, almost no new clothes, only if I really want to. It was not easy, but it was not hard either. A dream warmed me, so I could be patient. I made travel my priority and after receiving my salary, first of all I put it aside for a dream.

This is a very important point, because you will not be able to save the required amount of money if you do not prioritize your goal, giving up various pleasant little things in favor of a dream every day. All that year, I did not have enough money for new clothes and gadgets, going to the cinema and cafes, taxis, etc. because at the beginning of the month I saved most of my salary and lived off the leftover money.

As you accumulate, you will have to tackle your budget. If you want to travel the world on your own – the ability to keep track of income and expenses is paramount. Without this, there is simply no way, it is better to get used to it in advance.

Let’s start with the bad, but rather predictable, news: it’s unlikely that such a journey will be implemented without a penny. There are two cost items that cannot be saved.

The first is visas. Of course, you can ask a trucker friend to smuggle you across the border, but, firstly, this will create a number of obstacles during an illegal stay in the country, and, secondly, we prefer legal ways of saving.

The second is medical insurance. Before you go to travel the world, you need to clearly understand that this activity is very adventurous, and often dangerous. The bus is an inexpensive form of transport, suitable for short transfers between cities. Study the route and ticket prices carefully. It often happens that the price of tickets “on the transfer” will be much lower than for a direct flight.

The train is also inexpensive, especially if you book your tickets in advance. It is better to choose night flights, in which, if you are lucky, you can sleep, saving at the same time on accommodation.

Meals during the trip

One of the main components of how to travel for free is food during the trip. First, let’s take a look at the options that don’t require money.

To eat without spending money, you need to plan the route in advance so that it passes through charities that host open dinners. There are several such organizations in Europe with dozens of branches.
You can also wait until cafes and restaurants close and ask the staff if there is any excess food left. It remains almost always, and instead of throwing away the food, it can be given to the tourist. Perhaps you need an interesting travel story in return! But what can you not do about hunger, right?
There is an option with minimal spending of money – buying groceries in supermarkets. Here, too, you need to prepare and compare prices in different supermarkets in advance, and then write down several addresses with the most reasonable prices and buy there. Travelers usually buy bread, cheese, sausage and beach packs.

If you spend the night at someone at a party, the owners premises, as a rule, you and feed.

In various religious institutions, temples, monasteries, there are often free canteens. For example, many people like to eat at a Sikh temple – in India or some other country. In Buddhist monasteries, Orthodox charitable canteens, etc.
Take food with you and carry it in your backpack. If you are traveling to expensive countries, then you can stock up on food from home. If you have the necessary utensils, a gas burner, a wood chip stove, you can cook very cheap Russian food yourself instead of spending money on buying ready-made meals, even in cheap public catering. Cooking yourself will be cheaper.
This method will seem ethically unacceptable to some, and I have not personally used it yet, but many people practice it (and not only homeless people!). Pick up, while still fresh food, thrown into the trash. To put up a tent in the center of a city, of course, is not the best idea, but if you stop well in front of the city, even on the highway, you can easily find a place to sleep. This is the same tourism as if you went hiking in the mountains. The tent can be set up in the city itself, in some park, forest belt. If you come at night and leave early in the morning, then no one will see you. And in many places, even if they see it, it’s not scary, with experience the fear of such overnight stays passes.
In some countries, due to the high population density, it is extremely difficult to find a quiet place for a tent, but in them you can find an overnight stay, a registration with local residents. To do this, you need to contact someone with a request to spend the night. Often this is difficult and here you need to apply your sociability and experience of such conversations. Come at the right time and place. This is best done in residential areas (not in the center) with one-story buildings. You can go up and ask the owners about spending the night with them, and if not with them, then with someone of their acquaintances. Good for such communication, various holidays and folk festivals are suitable, where people are located for acquaintance, especially with a foreign traveler. People in the Caucasus and Muslim countries are very hospitable. In rural areas, the chances of finding an overnight stay are greater than in the city.
You can try to spend the night in administrative buildings, some institutions with a security guard, where there is no particular severity. The same tent can be set up in a guarded parking lot right in the city itself, among the stone jungle.
In some countries, there are rest rooms at gas stations for truck drivers where you can sit, watch TV, etc. I spent the night in such places in the United States when there was a heavy downpour on the street, which made it difficult to sleep in a tent (there was a single layer without an awning).

There are various benches and gazebos. Even locals often stay overnight in such places. There is nothing shameful in this, it is quite normal to spend the night in such a place.

1) View ticket prices to nearby locations. It often happens that tickets to large cities are cheaper than to small ones. It will be much more economical to buy a ticket to a “cheap” place, and from there it will not be difficult to get there by train or bus.

2) Visit the tourist information office. There you will be advised where it is better to go, where it is cheapest to eat or spend the night, and they will also give you a map of the city so that you do not get lost. The addresses of such offices can be easily found on the Internet (most often on the official website of the city).

3) Use free Wi-Fi. In most large cafes, in Starbucks, McDonald’s, in libraries, you can use the Internet for free. To search for Wi-Fi hotspots, I recommend using the www.shareair.net service.

4) Use free toilets. The savings are made up of little things. Free toilets are almost always available in large supermarkets, bars, hotels, and government agencies.

5) Food is cheaper where there are no tourists. There are expensive establishments on the central streets, but decent and inexpensive places to eat can be found in small streets.

7) Skip-the-line sightseeing and save a lot of time. At lunchtime, the queues are minimal because organized groups of tourists visit the sights either early in the morning or in the afternoon.

Probably like all stories, it’s hard to start a story. This story is no exception. Several years ago, with the same title, I began a story about my trip to Russia by car. Then that story did not get much response. Today I will try to open you a new chapter of my travels from a different angle of perception.

June 29. Start.

I started my journey from Veliky Novgorod. Behind his back hung a complete hiking backpack weighing sixteen and a half kilograms. The card had a little less than five hundred rubles. Staying overnight at the track is not an option – it is too noisy and dangerous. I opened the navigator and looked at what was ahead of the settlements, but they were far from the road and I decided to go to the nearest gas station. After asking permission from the guard, he set up a tent next to the gas station behind the fence. I put a bag of clean clothes under my head, ate a banana and went to bed.

30 June. I slept in a few hours, but decided to sleep more – the road was long. Slept, by the way, very comfortable. I had a bite of kozinak and went to stop again. Picked me up outbid, who drove the car to the sacrum for sale to his uncle. By the way, at first he mistook me for my grandfather because of my beard. And he picked me up, because at the age of 16 he ran away from home and went to Moscow and knows how difficult it is to hitchhike. I decided to go further on foot to the next village to which it was about 10 km. The weather was not pleasing – in the evening, according to the forecast, rain was promised. Three kilometers later, a woman picked me up and gave me a lift to the village of Yazhelbits, where I was heading. After a little walk, I saw summer residents and asked for food.
