The Etherpad based TitanPad is the one I missed. This allows you to do much more than just take notes with other users at the same time without having to sign in. You can import documents and then export the modified document. With its clean and highly functional interface, the TitanPad has collaboration features that many alternative web apps lack, such as chat, blame colors, and a time slider for viewing a timeline. You can even save revisions without having an account.

CoSketch is a multi-user whiteboard with an interface that requires little or no training. Its design is not “modern” in today's environment, but it is one of the best considering the possibilities and their usefulness. It supports hotkeys, provides undo history, many tools, image library, image upload, google maps embedding and chat. You can also quickly change your username to something that your teammates recognize you by.

Collaborative coding

Firepad seems to offer the best features combined with an intuitive interface. In addition to changing your name and choosing from several style preferences, perhaps the most useful feature is the drop-down menu of all past “sites” automatically saved. It's always a plus if the tool has it without having to create an account or even hit Save.

Joint task list

flask is a simple web-based to-do list app with a modern mobile user interface. Each task list has its own customizable link allowing you to share your tasks. Tasks can be “flagged” by moving them to the top of the list. You can also mark tasks with different colors. If you're expecting a fully featured “task manager”, Flask is not. There is no ‘admin' account / controls, so anyone with access to the link can modify the tasks. You can suggest a Flask feature via UserVoice and you will see that they have actually implemented many of the suggestions.

Planleaf is an alternative tool that you might consider. This is an email based to-do list that doesn't require registration either. Compose an email with tasks (each starting with a dash), add ” [email protected] ” in the cc field, and send it to your teammates. Submit this to-do list back and forth when tasks are completed or new ones are added – keep everyone updated without creating a new to-do list.

Doodle is one of the easiest ways to find time that works for everyone

One person creates an “event”, enters some of the available time slots (optional) and sends the link to others where they can enter the time that suits them. As the event creator, you have a dedicated “admin link” that allows you to edit and manage the event. Note that the only reason Doodle requires your email is because you have to send the invitation via email.

Brainstorming can be one of the first tasks you do with your group, and building smart mapping is a powerful tool for group creativity.

Diagrammr [no longer available] is a web application based on “proposal records”. Enter three words – the first and third words are linked by the middle word. If you want to group multiple words together, use quotation marks around those specific words. Below the chart, there are links to resize, layout, delete, and embed.

It would be nice to have a smart website with a lot of features, but still be flexible without requiring an account. However, my search was unsuccessful.

Bubbl.us provides a happy environment. This is a very popular mind mapping tool that we even recommend for kids.

Start creating without an account, but if you want to save or share (pretty important features), you need an account. However, an account is not required to access the smartcard link that you share with others, which is a plus.

Google Docs

Perhaps the most famous online document collaboration app. With it, you can open access to documents, spreadsheets to your colleagues or clients and work with them in real time. Since Google Docs is a Web application, its requirements are minimal, and the documents are stored on a server, which allows you to access them from anywhere in the solar system (provided you have an Internet connection).

Stixy

Stixy is a flexible system for drawing and posting ads. With it, you can create an unlimited number of notes, change their settings and move them around your virtual table. Among other things, there are other useful ways to use it: commenting and joint discussion of Web pages or parts of them.

Project2Manage

This application is a full-fledged free project manager (like Basecamp). Anyone who wants to start a project can have an unlimited number of them. The user can set different levels of access and restrictions for each of the team members, describe their tasks, work results, etc.

Bubbl.us

The service is a free, web-based collaborative brainstorming application. You can use it to create beautiful mind maps to share with other team members. You can then save the map, mail it, print it, or paste it directly into the Web page (you are given the HTML embed code). Among other things, you can simply link to the created map in read-only mode. This service has taken pride of place among my bookmarks, as it allows you to quickly and conveniently work with mind maps.

Dabbleboard

Dabbleboard is a self-contained drawing application. You can draw interface sketches, diagrams, create diagrams, including many other different things. You can create toolkits (sets of reusable drawing objects) or use predefined ones.

Protonotes

Protonotes is a free widget for your HTML prototypes. To add it to your own page, you just have to play with JavaScript. Protonotes is very suitable for testing interface usability, design criticism, testing something. To always be aware of events (for example, when colleagues add a new note), you can subscribe via RSS. In addition, all data can be exported, for example, to CSV and opened in applications such as Excel.

ProjectPier

Another online project management application, however ProjectPier is also an OpenSource project written in PHP. Manage your tasks, team members, projects using a single interface, which in itself is very simple and lightweight.

Twiddla
