Police officer Okan Yesilhat tried to challenge the will of pharmacist George Sklavos by fabricating a 14-year relationship between them. A law enforcement officer said that he was secretly a de facto partner of Sklavos, who was 30 years older than him, and thus can claim his inheritance of six million Australian dollars (57 million rubles). Just three and a half hours after As Sklavos suffered a heart attack in August 2013, Yesilhat transferred A$200,000 (11.4 million rubles) to himself from the pharmacist's account. As the investigation later established, this was the largest one-time transaction for the entire existence of the pharmacist's account. Sklavos himself bequeathed the fortune to two nieces. He never married and had no children of his own. The heirs sued Yesilhat. The investigation found that the policeman was married to two different women for 14 years, during which, as he claims, he had a relationship with Sklavos. In December 2018, the court convicted the former policeman on 14 counts related to fraud and misappropriation of money from the accounts of Sklavos. He was sentenced to two years in prison and 750 hours of community service. He also needs to pay legal fees. In May 2021, the New South Wales Court of Appeal dismissed Yesilhat's claim that he was in partnership with the late pharmacist and refused to review the court's past decision. Under Australian law, the couple can be considered de facto partners, if they are not married but have lived together continuously for at least two years. The court may take into account the duration of the relationship, financial independence and the degree of mutual commitment to living together. If a person is recognized as a de facto partner, this gives him the right to claim the inheritance of the other partner in the event of his death and receive social benefits due to him.
