Sometimes we can confuse it with stress or spring beriberi. But it should be able to distinguish at least in order to timely seek help from specialists.

In 2017, one of the most talked about films at the Sundance festival was Restless. Its main character (and at the same time – the director and scriptwriter) – Jennifer Brea. In the film, she spoke about how chronic fatigue syndrome prevents her from enjoying life. And it's not just a little stress – it's a serious problem that we often dismiss or confuse it with increased fatigue due to a sudden deadline at work.

Why chronic fatigue syndrome is hard to detect

Let's be honest: some doctors (and even WHO) are still not ready to recognize the syndrome as a separate disease or even confuse it with seasonal blues or banal overwork. The list of its symptoms is quite extensive, and you can experience several of them at once. Also called myalgic encephalomyelitis, it is believed that women suffer from it 2-3 times more often than men. The reason is that we often combine motherhood, everyday life and a successful career. If there are at least two points out of three, but you can't find a balance, then chronic fatigue will not be long in coming.

This syndrome is really insidious: in Japan, for example, there is the term "karoshi". So called death in the workplace, which occurs from overwork. Everyone has felt very tired at least once in their life – for example, after completing a laborious project, fighting the coronavirus, or breaking up with a boyfriend. But she does not do significant damage if she does not become your constant companion.

The main symptom of chronic fatigue syndrome is its persistence. It is not possible to defeat the feeling of weakness and emptiness with the help of rest, a change of scenery, or communication with loved ones. Low concentration and apathy cannot be dealt with with coffee or weekends spent in bed. Banal fatigue turns into an extreme degree of overwork. At the same time, you do not have enough energy, no matter what you do to increase its level. You can also suspect chronic fatigue if you:

began to experience difficulties with the implementation of routine activities – from work to personal hygiene;

you feel that over time, fatigue only progresses, and does not recede;

suffer from sleep disorders or simply wake up tired;

notice lapses in memory and cannot remember the names of new acquaintances or follow the simplest instructions;

suddenly began to suffer from muscle pain or hypersensitivity to light.

If the symptoms occur separately from each other, then they can be considered a sign of an impending flu, insomnia, or problems with the brain. It is extremely difficult for doctors to determine chronic fatigue syndrome. After all, it is impossible to do this with an ultrasound or a blood test. Therefore, in a conversation with a specialist, it is important to describe your condition as fully as possible.

What is the danger of chronic fatigue

At the heart of the syndrome is an inadequate response to stress. A glitch occurs due to which your hormonal system becomes too sensitive. It produces cortisol even if the irritant is not particularly dangerous. The “stress hormone" is produced around the clock: the body is working for wear and tear and you lose sleep. Sometimes the reverse situation occurs – cortisol levels are constantly low, and therefore you constantly and unsuccessfully struggle with drowsiness.

Chronic fatigue syndrome harms not only your psychological health. It exhausts the adrenal glands, lowers the immune system, and causes insulin resistance. Therefore, the prevention of fatigue is incredibly important – and here you can not do without walking in the fresh air, healthy and tasty food and regular positive emotions!

Post source: salon.kr.ua

May 12 is International Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Prevention Day.
