The film begins with a prologue in which a mysterious black monolith transforms ancient Australopithecus into humans. Millions of years later, humanity finds the same monolith on the moon. Then the action is transferred to the spaceship “Discovery”, which flies on a research mission to Jupiter. But on the way, the HAL 9000 on-board computer starts to behave very strangely.<\/p>\n
Stanley Kubrick's 1968 science fiction film, based on Arthur Clarke's short story The Sentinel, is one of the most important films in history. This film influenced both the genre of science fiction and cinema in general.<\/p>\n
The tape is devoted to many analyzes, and its ambiguous ending still causes controversy among critics and ordinary viewers. More than 50 years have passed since the release of the Odyssey, but it is still capable of making a powerful impression thanks to its unique style, full of surrealism.<\/p>\n
Kubrick believed that it is always more important to show than to say, because cinema is primarily a visual art. Therefore, the director paid special attention to the aesthetics of the frame and the musical accompaniment of his films.<\/p>\n
For example, the movements of celestial bodies in The Odyssey look like a majestic cosmic waltz thanks to the music of Johann Strauss. And the famous prologue of the film, which is accompanied by the chords of the symphonic poem “Thus Spoke Zarathustra”, has become one of the most cited scenes in cinema.<\/p>\n
The action of the film based on the science fiction novel of the same name by Stanislav Lem takes place in the distant future. Many years before the events described, scientists discovered the planet Solaris, the surface of which is an intelligent ocean.<\/p>\n
An orbital research station has been built specifically for the study of Solaris. The main character arrives there – psychologist Chris Kelvin. He has to figure out what is happening at the station, and understand why one of the few scientists who were there committed suicide shortly before his arrival.<\/p>\n
“Solaris” is rightfully considered one of those most important films that every person who is not indifferent to cinema is obliged to watch at least once in his life. Tarkovsky greatly reduced the fantastic plot of Stanislav Lem and paid more attention to the moral and ethical component.<\/p>\n
This interpretation was terribly disliked by Lem himself, because he was more worried about the issues of knowing the world, while for Tarkovsky it was important to bring to the fore the moral torment of the heroes.<\/p>\n
The next attempt to film Solaris was made by American director Steven Soderbergh in 2002. Lemu also did not like this film – in particular, because the director focused more on romance rather than fiction. But this time the writer was not alone in his opinion – critics and viewers greeted the picture coolly.<\/p>\n
The diploma work of the famous director John Carpenter tells about the crew of the ship called “Dark Star”. The astronauts have an important task – to get rid of unstable planets that could pose a danger to future colonizations. As their mission is nearing completion, they unexpectedly encounter an alien, which will ultimately cause them a lot of trouble.<\/p>\n
The low-budget “Dark Star” was awarded the “Saturn” award for the best special effects and became in some way the forerunner of the movie “Alien”, in which the space crew also fought for survival. The creator of the famous xenomorphs Dan O'Bannon is directly related to Zvezda – he co-wrote the script and played the role of astronaut Pinback.<\/p>\n
Science fiction lovers will also find in this film many references to the work of Philip K. Dick (“Ubick”, “What the Dead Said”), Ray Bradbury (“Kaleidoscope”) and Clifford Symak \u200b\u200b(“The Junkyard”).<\/p>\n
Alien<\/p>\n
Space thriller by Ridley Scott tells about how the crew of the spaceship “Nostromo” is trying to escape from a creepy alien, who ended up on board after a sortie on an unknown planet.<\/p>\n
“Alien” not only received cult status and a number of prestigious awards, but also served as the beginning of an entire franchise, including films, books and computer games. And even spawned a series of crossovers “Alien vs. Predator”, in which two films were released.<\/p>\n
In 2012, Ridley Scott returned to work on the legendary franchise and filmed the prequel “Prometheus”, the plot of which tells about the appearance of Aliens as a species. However, not everyone liked the new film. Fans criticized the picture for distorting the original concept, and critics – for the ridiculous behavior of the characters and plot inconsistencies.<\/p>\n
The sequel to Alien: Covenant is even more controversial. Instead of answering the unanswered questions in Prometheus, the film added tons of new ones. Not to mention the script's blunders, the number of which “Testament” even surpassed its predecessor.<\/p>\n
The historical drama by Ron Howard is based on real events that occurred in 1970 during the Apollo 13 mission. The first two days of the flight pass without any special incidents, but then a serious accident occurs on board – an explosion of an oxygen cylinder. This incident not only puts an end to the landing on the moon, but also threatens the safe return of astronauts to Earth.<\/p>\n
Apollo 13 is primarily known as the film that popularized the legendary phrase “Houston, we have a problem.” But do not forget that this is also a very good movie, telling in detail and believable about one of the most dramatic moments in the history of space exploration.<\/p>\n
Captain Miller and his crew are ordered to examine the remains of the Event Horizon experimental spacecraft, which disappeared several years ago in the Neptune region. Having examined the ship, the crew realizes that everyone on board has disappeared without a trace.<\/p>\n
The audience did not appreciate the film, despite the excellent acting, vivid special effects and admirable work of the cinematographer Adrian Biddle. It was because of the box office failure of the tape that director Paul Anderson was forced to take on more commercial projects.<\/p>\n
The crew of the Serenity spacecraft is a smuggler. During the next operation, a government agent appears on their trail. And then the pirates have to flee to a remote part of the system, where ruthless cannibals live.<\/p>\n
When Joss Whedon's serial space western “Firefly” was unexpectedly closed, indignant fans tried for a long time to get the continuation of the project. Finally, in 2005, Whedon did shoot a full-length feature film, Mission Serenity, which logically ended the series\u2019s interrupted storyline.<\/p>\n
The film adaptation of the cult novel by Douglas Adams by director Garth Jennings tells the story of the arrival of aliens on Earth. True, the aliens did not come to conquer it, but to demolish it in order to build an intergalactic highway.<\/p>\n
Originally The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy appeared as a radio show for BBC Radio, followed by novels, television series, games and comics. The universe of Douglas Adams is, first of all, a satire on the modern world, ridiculing bureaucracy, ignorance and many other pressing problems. And only in the second – space adventures.<\/p>\n
Unfortunately, Adams did not have time to complete his work on the script, and it was already completed by director Garth Jennings and screenwriter Carey Kirkpatrick. The result is a good science fiction film with a specific English humor and, as Douglas Adams himself would say, “mostly harmless”.<\/p>\n
Danny Boyle's sci-fi thriller tells how the crew of a spaceship called Icarus II is sent to the dying sun to awaken it again and prevent humanity from dying. True, this is not the first such mission. During the flight, the crew hears the callsigns of the first crew of Ikar-I, which disappeared without a trace seven years ago.<\/p>\n
The history of the creation of this tape proves that good science fiction is not an easy genre of cinematography to produce. Although the film was shot in just three months, it took a tremendous amount of time and effort. After all, it took two years for the script and general preparation, and another year for editing and work on visual effects. As a result, director Danny Boyle promised never to return to this genre – working on it seemed so exhausting to him.<\/p>\n
Two military astronauts emerge from suspended animation in a spaceship. Both are unable to remember where they are flying and why. The situation becomes even worse when the heroes realize that the ship is infested with unknown man-eating monsters.<\/p>\n
The space horror film by German director Christian Alvert strongly resembles the films Alien, Inferno, and Through the Horizon and scares the audience with mostly confined spaces and dark corridors.<\/p>\n
Space dispatcher Sam has been working on the moon all alone for three years. He monitors the production of rare gas and can only communicate with a talking robot, and there is not a soul around. But a couple of weeks before the end of the contract, Sam senses that something is wrong around him.<\/p>\n
Duncan Jones, son of David Bowie's intimate directorial debut, proved to be a self-contained and surprisingly mature film. In the center of events is the only character, masterfully embodied on the screen by actor Sam Rockwell.<\/p>\n
The most amazing thing is that the tape looks very spectacular, although it was removed in record time and with minimal investment (even the model of the lunar rover was simply dragged on a rope).<\/p>\n
The plot revolves around the adventures of Starfleet Academy cadet James T. Kirk and his friend Spock, who have to save the galaxy from the time-traveling Romulan Nero.<\/p>\n
No list of space films would be complete without mentioning the Star Trek media franchise. The original television series, created by Gene Roddenberry and the beginning of the massive Star Trek universe, was released in 1966. It told about the adventures of the crew of the ship “Enterprise” in the vastness of the galaxy.<\/p>\n
When creating the restart, director J.J. Abrams took a risky move – he did not shoot the direct prequel to the original series, but instead created an alternative story with the same characters. Not without some pleasant surprises for fans of the franchise: the legendary Leonard Nimoy appeared in the role of old Spock from the future.<\/p>\n
Of course, Star Trek has been reflected in art more than once. But the most extraordinary case of creative reflection on this topic can be confidently called an episode of the series “Black Mirror” called “USS Callister”. In addition to burning issues, the series plays up the entire history of the development of “Star Trek”, from the original series and ending with the restart of JJ Abrams.<\/p>\n
Standing parodies of Star Trek also include the Orville series by Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane. As for the official franchise, it is more alive than all living things: to date, two seasons of the series “Star Trek: Discovery” have already been released.<\/p>\n
