Everything you need to know about procrastination

What procrastination means and how to identify it

The term “procrastination” came to us from the English language and the meaning of this word literally is “delay.” In fact, this is the definition of such behavior.

In simple terms, procrastination is a person's tendency to postpone their affairs to the very deadline. You probably have already met such people: “I'll have time for everything,” “it can be done next time,” “I still have a train of time,” “it will wait.”

The crux of the problem is that it won't wait. People deliberately miss useful time, waste it on all sorts of nonsense and trifles. And in order to do an important matter, they lack the strength, attitude, determination. This leads to frustration (futile expectations and disappointment).

Many people think that procrastination is equal to laziness. It depends on what characteristic of this state to take. The synonyms of procrastination are often considered idleness, laziness, and a mirage. But laziness differs from procrastination in the complete absence of goal setting and desire to work, as well as idleness. And the mirage is rather close in meaning to the result – frustration.

And now it's time to find out who a procrastinator is. How to identify it?

Procrastinators are people who come up with anything, just not to do what is needed now. They are strained by the very beginning of the business, although then it burns directly with them. But these constant promises like “in 5 minutes”, “just a little more”, “will tolerate 10 minutes” prevent you from starting your main work.

The main signs of procrastinators are:

there is a desire to do something such, global;

but then the person is distracted, consciously or unconsciously, by trifles, reassuring himself that he is busy;

then the global business is finally pushed aside, while pangs of conscience begin (as I could), self-criticism (well, here I am again), justification (well, nothing, tomorrow …);

the planned case is postponed until the moment when all the deadlines are already on fire, or it just needs to be abandoned;

self-criticism increases, and then comes “well, okay, not much and it should have been”;

and so constantly …

If you recognize yourself in the description, you have joined the ranks of us – procrastinators. I know there is nothing to brag about, but sometimes I join their ranks too. But do not be upset, most people are susceptible to this state, it just manifests itself in everyone to a different degree.

There are even kinds of this state. When I read what procrastination can be, I realized that I have not lost everything. So, the views:

daily, household – only household chores are postponed;

decision-making – a person delays decision-making: from small (what to wear today) to large (what job to get a job);

neurotic is the postponement of global decisions (the choice of a life partner, profession, friends);

academic – left for later passing the session, writing term papers, etc.;

compulsive – both decisions and deeds are postponed, such a boat floating with the flow.

Academic procrastination

The essence of the phenomenon

There is a significant difference between everyday laziness and procrastination. In the first case, a person avoids any activity, loafers. In the second case, he intends to start matters of paramount importance, but switches to more pleasant ones that have nothing to do with life plans. A person is active, but constantly does the wrong thing.

Psychologists give the following definition to this phenomenon: the individual's tendency to postpone important matters, to avoid solving problems, fulfilling their obligations, replacing them with abstract affairs.

In simple terms, the essence lies in the constant postponement of serious, complex and, as a rule, unpleasant cases “for tomorrow.” That is, a person, going to start working, always decides that it can be done in a couple of hours, or on Monday, or in a month, and is technically distracted by all sorts of little things: social networks, cleaning, coffee, reading the news.

Let me illustrate with my own example. While writing this article, I first had to familiarize myself with the available materials. When it became necessary to take the first notes in order to capture ideas in a notebook, I decided that it would be better to brew tea instead. Naturally, further writing of the article was postponed at least for the time of tea drinking.

An even more striking example is Tim Urban, blogger, author of the Wait But Why website, and a former graduate student who flunked qualifying work. He was given a whole year to write his dissertation. But he wrote it not in a year, but in the last 3 days. Of course, the supervisor gave an extremely unflattering assessment.

He goes into detail on this, and also on the mindset of a typical “shelter” in the next video.

Today Tim is one of the most renowned experts in popularizing scientific knowledge. His blog is a kind of protest against light, time-killing sites with superficial “pop” content. Urban's website is constantly updated with new essays on time management and effective planning.

Look at this procrastination map, it illustrates the procrastinator's thought process.

The procrastinator puts off any business, even those that have a deadline. When the allotted time runs out, the person begins to fuss, trying to complete the entire volume in one sitting. As a result, the obligations are fulfilled very poorly or remain unfulfilled. This leads to anxiety, regret, or shame.

He may lose faith in himself and motivation, which leads to an aggravation of the situation. Often this condition leads to unhealthy psychological manifestations and can even cause psychosomatic illness. In addition, there is a risk of loss of credibility among acquaintances and employees.

Signs and symptoms

So, what are the characteristics of an individual's propensity to procrastinate? He waits until the last minute before taking action. He understands that there is a deadline ahead and time is slipping through his fingers. Nevertheless, he tries in every possible way to ignore this unpleasant feeling and continues to do unimportant things.

Such people are very prone to self-deception. Frequent “weighty” excuses for them are statements such as “I'm in the wrong mood today” or “I need a magic pendel to do everything quickly and perfectly” and other similar excuses. Thus, a person spends a huge amount of energy not only on unimportant activities, but also on experience and shame about his inefficiency.

Researcher Pierce Steele, in his book The Procrastination Equation, found a correlation between a person's impulsivity and a tendency to give up. An individual who lives only in the present moment prefers things that give an instant sense of satisfaction. It turns out that he sacrifices what will bring beneficial results in the distant future.

Procrastination is an emotional state, as it manifests itself as a reaction to the need to fulfill their obligations and planned affairs.

Depending on the type of emotions experienced, it is divided into 2 types: relaxed and tense.

With the first type, a person seeks to have a good time and have fun, he is in high spirits, somewhat fussy, occasionally experiencing slight anxiety. In the second case, the individual is overloaded with responsibilities, he is not satisfied, hesitant. This is often accompanied by a loss of orientation in life.

The behavior of such a person goes through the following main stages:

Inspiration – first, there is a desire to achieve some global goal.

Decreased enthusiasm – comes calm and the intention to abandon the decision.

Fading out of motivation – the search for a reason why it is better to postpone the case.

Postponement – start of work is postponed indefinitely.

Deadline – there comes a time when the case should already be completed. This is where destructive self-criticism begins. The project is either abandoned or completed in a hurry.

The cycle repeats after a while.

And this happens from one serious issue to the next. The list of unfinished business is replenished and introduces chaos in the thoughts and life of a person.

10 signs of a procrastinating person

To consolidate the knowledge gained, let's quickly go over the most common signs that indicate that you are procrastinating.

Sign number 1. You're watching TV

Watching TV is a simple and affordable way to “leave this world” for a while and observe the life of other, more “successful” people and non-people.

Sign number 2. You constantly beat yourself up and call yourself a loser

Yes. Procrastination creates feelings of guilt.

Sign number 3. You are in an upbeat, a little “do not care” mood

You think: “Ah-ah. Then I'll do it. ” And you say it to yourself in such a tone as Vovka from the thirtieth kingdom, who once said the greatest phrase of all times and peoples: “And so it will do!”

Sign number 4. Do you play computer games

Computer games are another cool way to get procrastinated completely. You sit, wet monsters, save princesses, swing levels, show off in front of newcomers. Beauty…

And meanwhile life goes on. It flows. Like a stream. Which gradually develops into a turbulent river flow. Which subsequently flows into a sea called “Wasted Life.”

And it’s true. Isn't it beauty?

Reason number 5. Inability to prioritize

Priorities. Shmiriotets.

In short.

If you cannot understand what is more important to you: to see Daenerys Targaryen die, or to clean the house, then you will most likely try to do everything and do not have time to do anything. So to speak, you will plunge into the abyss of procrastination.

Sign number 6. Do you watch TV series

“Fixies” don't count. They educate.

The rest of the series (and, as you understand, the cartoons) are bad. Harm. Harm. And more harm!

Sign number 7. Do you like to say “I will still have time!”

In the words of the beloved Wikipedia, you are “distorted about time”. It seems to you that you can still afford to sleep for an hour or two for interesting programs on REN TV, but in fact, for as long as three days you have to go to the store for bread.

Sign number 8. You are often distracted

Even I, although I think I overcame procrastination, I distract myself to quickly glance at the VK feed and check if any TOP celebrities have written to me.

Distractions like these are one of the hallmarks of procrastination.

Sign number 9. You are constantly procrastinating

This point is very similar to the seventh.

The difference is that you don't just say that you will do something later, but you set a deadline.

For example: “I will move the Himalayas to my Muhosransk on Friday, at 18:00, after watching the culinary show” Recipe for a million hryvnia (rubles, yuan, Zimbabwean dollars) “.

Sign number 10. You hate distractions and look for excuses

Often when I am distracted, I start shouting: “I'm busy!”, “Don't bother me!”, “Got it already!”, “Tired-and-and-and-and-and-and-and-and-and-and-and-so!”. Especially when your sister (or grandmother) is distracting. But by no means mom. She can stand up for herself. (Am I a creature?)

Perhaps something similar is happening to you.

Also, you are probably looking for excuses for why you are distracted.

For example, when I climb into Telegram while writing another article, I must say to myself: “What if a partner wrote something important to me?” or “Well, you have to see what happened to that business blogger (Nastya, hello!)”.

Scientific rationale

Cognitive functions of the brain are responsible for achieving goals, such as control of motives, concentration, judgment, executive activity. The latter governs creativity and efficiency more than intelligence. It determines how we will achieve the goal. The most important stage in the execution process is the initiation of activities. This is where the crash occurs.

This is due to the functioning of two parts of the brain: the limbic system, which is responsible for sensations, emotions, instincts, and the frontal cortex – our rational part.

The essence of the scientific theory is that when a person faces the need to make a decision, his behavior is primarily influenced by the limbic system, which is aimed at receiving momentary pleasures and is not focused on the future.

The frontal area, on the other hand, becomes active much later. A person procrastinates until, thanks to this area of the brain, he realizes that it is necessary not to survive, but only to do a difficult or unpleasant job.

Psychologists agree that the only property of the nervous system, thanks to which it is possible to overcome this contradiction, is neuroplasticity, that is, the ability of the brain to change. This means that with the right purposeful practice, we can develop and improve our capabilities.

Negative consequences

The consequences of this bad habit are enormous and can cause serious damage to a person's life. They are connected both with the professional sphere and relations with the environment, and with health.

When we postpone things that require immediate response from time to time, we limit our potential, miss opportunities. Our irrational conviction that we have enough time ahead gradually develops into deep regret for the lost days and even years.

We deprive ourselves of the opportunity to work efficiently. After all, if everything is done at the last minute, there is no time to check and hone the result. In addition, we label ourselves as an unreliable, non-punctual person, which inflicts colossal damage to authority.

Constant stress causes mental disturbances. A person becomes depressed, neurotic, difficult to adapt to changes in circumstances, and loses control over his life. This can provoke physical ailments: decreased immunity, diseases of the digestive system, migraines, ARVI.

Reasons for procrastination

To combat procrastination, you need to understand where it comes from. Psychology says that procrastination is not a disease, but it is not a norm either. So where does it come from?

There are several reasons for the occurrence:

strict parents in childhood who decided everything for a person, as a result – the inability to make decisions on their own;

loading the child with tasks that seem impossible to him, hence the fear of difficult tasks, the motivation to achieve the goal is not formed

the person has not learned to set goals correctly and assess their capabilities;

misunderstanding of what is required of a person, or misunderstanding of why it is required;

a constant multitasking regime can lead to emotional burnout, and this is a sure way to chronic procrastination;

bad experience: when a person several times fails to achieve success in a business, after several attempts he stops even trying, hence the delay in solving this problem for an indefinite time;

insecurity and self-sabotage, when, due to fear or disagreement with the demands put forward, a person sabotages the beginning, consciously or unconsciously avoids it;

lack of understanding of the negative consequences of their delay (we will talk about them below).

Analyzing why you avoid getting started or solving a problem will make it easier to get rid of procrastination.

To analyze your reasons for this condition, it is interesting to look at the picture of the procrastination map.

Effects

To get rid of something once and for all, you need to understand why you need to fight it. The consequences of this behavior are not as rosy as you think at first glance. It is not so easy to overcome this state at once, and the consequences lead to diseases.

Let's start with the physical consequences. A person who is used to procrastinating important tasks for later feels anxiety, anger and stress due to the fact that he always does not have enough time. Mental or physical strain occurs if you do all the work in the last hour. Lack of sleep and malnutrition (a person is forced to lose important things due to lack of time) lead to malaise, headaches, and so on.

Of the moral or psychological consequences, one can single out:

feeling of guilt, as it lets people down;

loss of your productivity;

disorganization;

problems with scheduling time;

prolonged depression due to failure;

decreased self-esteem;

development of laziness, when you don't want to set goals.

Also, do not forget about the consequences in the social sphere. Such a person is unlikely to quickly go up the career ladder. After all, he postpones everything and has little time. Who would like such an employee then?

Procrastination also affects a person's personal sphere. People become less confident in themselves, along with this remorse appears. This leads to the development of moral weakness, and sometimes moral strength is needed for a relationship with a loved one. You will agree with the phrase “you have to fight for happiness”? What kind of avid procrastinator is a fighter?

After such a description, for example, my mood deteriorated markedly, especially considering that I, too, tend to such behavior. But it’s not that bad. We have already decided that this is not a disease, which means that everything can be corrected.

How to deal with procrastination: 7 ways

Knowing such not very pleasant consequences, let's figure out how to cope with procrastination. Some researchers argue that people are more willing to solve problems that provide them with quick rewards. But it is very difficult for him to force himself to do something if the task is stretched out in time, requires a lot of energy and the reward will come later.

Statistics show that as many as 90% of procrastinators are aware of their problem, but do not know how to overcome it. How can you force yourself to do such long-term assignments? How to change your life for the better by doing things on time? Ready! Let's fight procrastination!

Are planning

Planning can help overcome procrastination. This is, consider, first aid in such a state. In your notebook, notebook or sheet on the refrigerator, write a plan for the day, week, month, … for now, that's enough. It has been proven that a person gets things done faster if he is accountable to someone. Therefore, ask your acquaintances or friends on social networks to ask you to do things or to report to them.

Franklin's method of fighting

The psychologist has developed an effective method to combat procrastination. It is as follows: first you do urgent matters, then important ones. Also, on the sheet, write down the day in two columns. For example, urgent matters:

Write a report to work.

Prepare food for the dog (otherwise it will eat you if you don't uncover it in time).

Buy cookies to receive guests in the evening.

And important things can be like this:

Wash your winter shoes.

Renovate the shower in the bathroom.

Sweep in the yard.

This way, you do what is urgent first. And if time remains, then what's important. But if there is no time left, what to do? I've been cleaning the closet like this for a week now … Don't be upset, some important things can wait a week! But do not postpone EVERYTHING on the back burner, otherwise it is again a vicious circle of procrastination and, moreover, what good, laziness, from which you need to get rid of immediately.

Observe time management

Oh, this is a whole science, which would also be nice to study back in school years. First, determine where your time is going. This will take approximately 2 weeks. Then rewrite the plan: top-priority and short-term tasks should take the first prize places.

In time management there is a rule of 3 seconds: to overcome procrastination will allow doing things that take about 3 seconds (this is a figurative designation). For example, washing the dishes after a meal is short-lived, but if this is not done, it will accumulate, which leads to spending more time later.

By doing this, you get used to quickly moving from words to deeds. Then this skill will be extended to longer tasks.

Prepare in advance, in the evening

It is better if you will speak or write your plans for the next day in the evening. And do not forget to write according to the principle “important – urgent”.

Finding the most urgent business

Select the most important thing of all, on which everything else indirectly depends. For example, if I don't cook dinner, the kids will be hungry, begging for food, and this will prevent me from completing other tasks. Therefore, I wake up and start cooking broth in the morning.

In this way, you can determine an important and urgent matter at work: if I do not make the program, I will not be able to remotely control production processes – I will get a header. Therefore, at first I do not drink coffee at the workplace, but finish the program. And only then I pour a cup of coffee and slowly drink it. And at the first call from the authorities, I run as fast as I can to report the result of well-coordinated work.

Divide the task into small tasks

This method helps to get out of procrastination. It also works when setting goals. A specific task can be broken down into small tasks, then it seems not so global, but quite feasible.

For example, there is a crisis at your company – the money went to the wrong account. Small tasks: find out from the financial director how he allowed this, call the chief accountant to report on the accounts, call the accountant who is responsible specifically for this operation, and resolve the issue with the collection and refund of funds.

Take care of yourself

Sometimes, in order to get rid of the procrastination of all affairs, you need to start a new life and change yourself. This means starting to take care of your sleep, proper nutrition, and doing sports exercises every day. You say, what does this have to do with it? This self-care is directly related to trying to stop procrastinating.

Brian Tracy talks very well about overcoming this problem:

Methods for overcoming procrastination

It is quite difficult to get rid of the addiction without the help of a specialist. Especially if its consequences have gone very far and have caused profound psychological changes. But if it is impossible to resort to the services of a professional, then for independent work it is worth adhering to certain rules and recommendations.

In order to decide how to overcome procrastination, you must first realize and accept the fact that there is a problem. Sometimes this is the most difficult step, but only after that can you build a strategy for the further struggle.

The second point is to understand the reason. After all, as shown above, they can be very different and the choice of the method of work depends on them.

For clarity, we will give examples of possible treatments.

Cause

What needs to be clarified

Proposed way to overcome

Diffidence

Do I have enough skills?

What do I need to master?

Replenish the missing skills (learn independently, delegate to a competent person or do something that is familiar).

Lack of motivation

How do I feel?

What's stopping me?

What is the value?

Determine the expected positive results.

To visualize the already realized intention in the brightest colors.

Independent disposition

What does this assignment mean for me?

Change the belief “should” to “it is my voluntary choice.”

You should always remember that your illness is just a deeply rooted habit, so it will take time and effort to overcome it once and for all. Personally, I am supported by the knowledge that any habit, if it is persistently introduced into your routine, is instilled in 28 days.

You can't make the typical mistake of every procrastinator – blame and criticize yourself. A feeling of guilt and dissatisfaction with oneself is experienced by any person who constantly postpones active work. This destructively affects the overall self-esteem and contributes to the deterioration of the situation. Therefore, you need to focus on your strengths and accept your weaknesses.

In addition to general recommendations, there are specific techniques.

Eisenhower Matrix

According to the idea, the person's tasks should be sorted according to the criteria of urgency and importance. We recommend that you always make a visual to-do list, because when you transfer thoughts to paper or electronic media, they turn from a messy idea into concrete planned actions. It is very convenient to maintain an electronic planner. We'll talk more about planning in future articles.

In order not to seem overwhelming and too difficult, it is recommended to break each project into small points. If, suppose, it is necessary to correctly write an expert opinion, the first planned step may be to search for methodological literature.

An alternative method is to do several things in parallel, giving each one a small amount of time. For example, 30 minutes – studying information, 30 minutes – exercises to develop memory, 30 minutes – meditation. Thanks to this approach, the upcoming tasks do not seem so cumbersome and become easier.

Renowned Stanford philosopher John Perry, in his book The Art of Procrastination, introduced the concept of “structured procrastination.” He believes that it can be used constructively. According to this technique, when planning, the most essential matters should be put at the top of the list, and after them a little less urgent and important, but also requiring vigorous activity.

In this case, the avid procrastinator is likely to skip the primary tasks, but will still do the necessary work. If you like this method of easy self-deception, read the book and apply the knowledge in practice.

Optimizing goals

When planning, you need to start with a common global goal and, based on it, set tasks for a closer perspective: for 10 years, 3 years, year, month, week, day. This is useful, because every second a person understands the importance of the current task – why it is being done and what results it will bring.

For those who are seriously concerned with the question of how to get out of stagnation and get carried away with life, I also advise you to read the book by Peter Ludwig “Beat Procrastination.” It contains powerful tools for motivating yourself and increasing your personal effectiveness.

If, despite the application of the proposed methods, there are cases that are postponed with the same persistence, it is necessary to find out why they seem so unpleasant, and carry out the correction in this direction.

Differences between laziness and procrastination

The essence of the phenomenon lies in the fact that, even realizing the need to do something, a person stubbornly ignores the importance and does something insignificant or spends time on entertainment. And this is not at all laziness, which is characterized by doing nothing, accompanied by some degree of anxiety (or even lack of it) about one's inaction.

Procrastinating, a person most often (but not always) realizes the importance / urgency of the upcoming affairs, but is not idle, but is busy with all sorts of nonsense, justifying this busyness with sometimes ridiculous arguments, or even does not think about it at all. This also cannot be called a pause that promotes rest, since, while resting, a person “reboots” in order to then start work with renewed vigor.

Procrastination is not conducive to relaxation, as a person spends his energy on low-priority activities.

Unlike procrastination, laziness is considered a person's desire to avoid any activity, a persistent desire to give up various efforts. There are “valid” reasons for laziness (overwork, burnout, lack of physical and mental strength) and “disrespectful” (conflict between “must” and “want”, lack of motivation, conviction that business is unnecessary, habit of leading a leisurely lifestyle, inability to plan correctly).

Psychologists say that procrastination should not be considered a type of laziness. They have significant differences. A lazy person strives to do nothing at all, considering sleep or “lying on the couch” as an ideal pastime. The procrastinator is active and always busy with something, but this vigorous activity does not benefit, but only wastes energy.

Procrastination and perfectionism

Procrastination is often used in conjunction with the term perfectionism. The perfectionist always strives for the perfect result, in whatever matters. Therefore, he is often not even accepted at the beginning of the case, because he is sure that there will not be enough time and resources. If he is sure that he will not achieve a perfect result, he will not get down to business, or put it off until there is a chance for perfect execution.

The perfectionist procrastinator strives to do what is needed in the best possible way, so he can endlessly grind small parts. Often he does not complete the entire work, but only leads to perfection in the initial part. It turns out that this person is wasting time, effort and resources, although the case is often not completed.

Of course, the person should be commended for their great desire to do all the work in the best possible way. Perfectionism becomes a problem when a person places too much emphasis on perfect execution, forgetting to get the job done. The ideal becomes unattainable, understanding this paralyzes the will of such a procrastinator. Therefore, he always doubts that he should not get down to business if the ideal result cannot be achieved in it.

The perfectionist is not able to be content with little, he needs to raise the bar incredibly high. Where everyone gets down to business and starts small, the perfectionist starts from the end. However, having raised the bar so high, he begins to think that he will not cope. Wanting to do the job perfectly, he begins to plan it, distribute actions into steps, make lists, collect information, study a lot. In short, he procrastinates. When some time has passed, he realizes that it has been lost and the project cannot be realized.

Parents themselves often provoke the emergence of perfectionism in the child, and contribute to the fact that he procrastinates. So, parents tell their child: “Try”, “Be strong”, “Get better”, “Be the first”, “Be careful”, “Don't do it”, “Be careful”, because they consider all these statements to be correct. But not everything happens the way it seems to them to be. It turns out that fostering a fighting spirit, a strong attitude, an understanding that a child should be the best, must try, be the first – they form perfectionism. Together with this, the child has a fear that it is dangerous to act, why else he should be careful.

Thus, the child has a tough internal conflict. He is determined to do everything in the best way and correctly, at the same time he is afraid to make mistakes, to do something wrong. Such a conflict is exhausting and takes away strength. He scolds himself and condemns himself because he does nothing.

When parents tell a child: “Be the best and hurry” and the children are not careful, then they will grow up as people who know their job, they will succeed in everything, they will not have an internal conflict.

A message was sent to the perfectionist – not to do and be careful, which contributed to his desire for an ideal result and his fear of making mistakes. This fear is “covered” by the instruction of the parents that one must become the best in everything. All this leads to constant procrastination in the perfectionist.

Not every perfectionist procrastinates. There are those who do not consider perfectionism to be their problem, they are less prone to procrastination. There are people whose perfectionism inclines them to stable procrastination, it leads to depression, stress, worries.

Treatment of procrastination

Procrastinators are not lazy people, because they are always busy with something, even if all these are small and frivolous things. They can clean up all the time, rearrange things, examine them. They do various small and frivolous things in order not to start doing more significant things.

The problem with procrastination is that if people, on the contrary, had to shift the very things, clean up, they would find a lot of other activities and excuses why they cannot do it now.

How to deal with procrastination? There is a treatment for procrastination called structured procrastination.

Structured procrastination is a to-do-list technique. This list should contain the most important and urgent matters, which gradually towards the end of the list are reduced to less useful and frivolous ones.

The list should be drawn up so that the cases at the beginning of the listing have one requirement, seem extremely important, but really, are not urgent. By avoiding the tasks at the top of the list, you can achieve results by completing the tasks at the end of the list. It is necessary to force yourself to believe in the importance of the topmost deeds, it is easy for procrastinators to do this, since they are extremely well-susceptible to self-deception.

Self-treatment for procrastination is very difficult if you do not involve a psychologist. It will help the person realize that they have a problem. After all, it is difficult for a person himself to realize what is wrong with him, because he does not just postpone things as it seems to him, but is dependent on this constant postponement, every day that comes, and with every fresh demand it becomes more difficult. Procrastination is not talked about as often as stress or depression.

Along with the division of cases into categories of important and less important, you can overestimate your responsibilities. Instead of “I must” you should say to yourself “I need.” With such a simple technique, the inner spirit of contradiction completely disappears. When a person previously understood that he had to carry out a certain task, it seemed to him that he owed someone and put off this task. When he says to himself that he specifically needs something, he is in a hurry to do it.

So a person learns to understand that he is obliged to complete his work project, but not because the authorities so wanted, but only because this is a job that brings valuable money, for which he buys the necessary things or has fun with his family.

The problem of procrastination implies drug treatment, especially when depression or other internal chronic processes accompanies procrastination. Here the psychiatrist or neurologist must work and prescribe treatment.

Treatment of procrastination is also carried out using folk remedies. This will seem absurd to some, but one should not immediately take a negative attitude towards it. It is necessary to understand the investigative connection of the processes. Procrastination affects a very important component of human life – time. Since a person always lacks it in full, this entails various negative consequences and causes an internal imbalance. This means that in order to overcome it, it is necessary to approach it comprehensively.

It is worth reviewing your own eating habits, how healthy foods are, able to supply energy and provide the necessary vitamins. It is also important to observe your physical activity. You can often hear how those individuals who do almost nothing, say how they lack strength, and continue to remain in “real estate” for half their lives. Balanced nutrition, sports and hardening give energy to do the right things, cheer up, increase stress resistance and the body's resistance to negative factors. All this is the first step in self-organization and ability to work.

The main mistakes of procrastinating people

People who think they know about procrastination often make mistakes in their fight against it. We have collected three of the most common mistakes.

Mistake 1. Constant self-reproach.

Procrastinators are very familiar with the feeling of constant dissatisfaction with themselves. It arises from the fact that a person understands that he is doing something wrong, but cannot cope with this state. There is no need to reproach yourself for idleness. Better to think about something positive.

Mistake 2. Thoughts that procrastinating is harmful.

Yes, procrastination is often harmful. But you don't need to think that this is such a useless habit, and you need to fight it at all costs. We said earlier that this is a normal defense reaction of the body. So take it as something natural. Be in tune with yourself and your body.

Error 3. Inaction.

Doing nothing about procrastination is also harmful. You need to constantly change your activities, trying to find what you like, but you should not start something new just because you cannot complete the old one. You need to find a dialogue with yourself.

You have to work with your shortcomings. But constantly reproaching yourself that you are simply wasting your time is silly. You don't need to listen to the “achievers” – people who constantly talk about how they are not saving anything until tomorrow, and that you need to do the same. Just stop procrastinating and get to work.

The slogan of Peter Ludwig's popular book “Beat Procrastination” makes hundreds of people think that they should do their best to get rid of this habit. But instead of winning, you need to make it work for you.

Procrastination triggers

Triggers are what triggers the procrastination process. If you notice that you spend a lot of time on social networks instead of working, then social. networks are your trigger. If you look at pictures on your phone, then your “mobile phone” will be the trigger.

Fighting triggers is the easiest way to get rid of procrastination over a short distance. Turning off the phone, closing the room and not talking to anyone really helps to use all the reserves and get the task done.

But it should be understood that by removing the trigger, you are working with the effect, not the cause. It is not a social network that makes you go into it. Your body wants to get instant pleasure, and the most familiar way for today's youth is social. net. Therefore, you should not rely solely on blocks of sites during work hours, turning off the phone, etc. Yes, this will help, but on the other hand, you will constantly think about it and lose concentration at work.

Test: do you have signs of procrastination?

Answer “Yes” or “No” to the questions below. Write down your answers:

Do you often reschedule important things to another day?

Do you never make a decision right away, even if it is possible?

When doing important work, you are often distracted, for example, checking your mail, pouring coffee, watching social media. networks?

At the beginning of the working day, you do not immediately start tasks, but wait for a certain mood?

Do you happen to be looking for a reason to postpone work?

Have you started to miss deadlines more often, not keep promises?

Are you afraid of new customers or big projects?

Having missed the deadline, do you come up with an excuse so that you don't feel guilty?

Are you constantly worried about business, thinking about unfinished tasks?

Do you often spend more time at work than you originally planned?

Assessment of test results:

You answered “No” to all questions: you are not in danger of procrastination. You are a responsible and organized person.

You answered “Yes” to 1-3 questions: you may be an aspiring procrastinator. Don't worry! A little discipline and work on yourself, and everything will be fine.

You answered “Yes” to 4-6 questions: there is a reason to think and analyze the work schedule. Perhaps you are overwhelming yourself, or perhaps you are starting to suffer from procrastination. Try to set aside more time for rest, better plan things.

You answered “Yes” to 7 or more questions: you are procrastinating. You need to act to stop postponing things for later. The tips from the article will help you find a solution.

Consequences of a psychological problem

The minimal manifestation is not a problem. But constant and global postponement for later leads to: wasting life in vain, lack of achievements and career growth (or even loss of work), depression, nervousness, resentment of fate, envy, non-use of their talents / skills / abilities, total loss of time, self-flagellation, “stripping evil at others”, nervous and physical exhaustion, etc.

Conclusion

Procrastination is slowly becoming a major problem in the 21st century. As in the 20th, the most popular reason for seeking psychologists was depression, so now it is the constant postponement of things. But if depression is a clear sign of problems with the body, and a person realizes that he is not able to cope with it himself, then procrastination, at first glance, is just laziness that needs to be overcome.

You can and should work with procrastination. It is only necessary to find a common language with this state and then your affairs will be carried out much faster

Sources used and useful links on the topic: https://levelself.ru/privychki/vrednye/chto-takoe-prokrastinaciya.html https://iklife.ru/samorazvitie/prokrastinaciya-prostymi-slovami-i-kak-poborot.html https://TopThinkBlog.ru/prokrastinacziya-chto-eto-takoe-prostymi-slovami-i-kak-s-nej-borotsya/ https://bbqcash.com/psychology/procrastination https://psihomed.com/prokrastinatsiya / https://kakzarabativat.ru/soveti/prokrastinaciya/ https://www.kadrof.ru/articles/44507

Post source: lastici.ru

Many people tend to postpone important things “for later” and there is a definition for this – procrastination.
