Free up storage space on your Mac

What is a cache and why should you delete it?

The cache is basically temporary files created by the operating system and used applications. For example, these can be temporary files, such as images and HTML documents created by a web browser, messenger clients (Vkontakte, Twitter, Viber, Skype, etc.).

If the user is editing a lot of photos and videos, he may notice that the editor also saves temporary data that is placed on the hard drive. In addition, video editors with the function of displaying the applied effects during editing do not always delete such files at the end of the work.

The cache of most applications is too small to pay attention to. System components such as Spotlight, Contacts, and Maps create relatively small caches that won't free up much space on your hard drive, even if you delete them.

One important point to note here is that you don't need to delete caches. If you do not urgently need to free up space on your hard drive, and at the same time you are constantly using many different applications and files, it is better to leave the cache to improve the speed of your Mac. In addition, many applications clear their cache on their own or have an option to manually clear them.

Delete cache button in Tweetbot app:

1: clear the cache

You may have heard of how to “delete cache” as one of the troubleshooting steps for your browser.

In fact, there is a good chance that your Mac can store a lot of information about your files, which is called your cache.

However, these files can actually take up a lot of space on your Mac, and instead of stimulating your Mac, it will slow things down.

So, this is where you have to clear the cache regularly.

2: uninstall any apps you don't use

All the apps you have on your Mac actually take up a lot of space on your Mac.

Once your Mac is full of various applications, there is a good chance that your Mac will become slower.

Make sure you uninstall any apps you no longer use and don't just put them in the trash, because this will still leave you some leftovers or app leftovers that will still take up some of your storage space.

3: remove all email attachments

After you receive an email on your Mac with PDF files, Word documents, images, etc., we double-click them by mistake.

Once this happens, all files will be saved in your mail download folders. The easiest way to do this is using Spotlight.

All you have to do is press Command plus Space so the search box appears on your screen. Once it appears on your screen, enter “Mail Downloads”. This will take you to the Mail Downloads folder.

Once you're in this folder, select the files you want to delete to free up space on your Mac.

1 Remove unnecessary items from the basket

The first step is to “take out the trash”, no matter how ridiculous it may sound, to empty the trash. The Mac Recycle Bin works similar to the Windows Recycle Bin, instead of deleting files from your hard drive, files are first moved to the Recycle Bin so you can recover them. Regularly empty the trash from unnecessary files, do not forget that some applications, such as Mail or iMovie, have their own trash, which also needs to be emptied periodically.

5: delete your big and old files that you have on your Mac

Deleting your big and old files is one of the easy ways to clean up your Mac and get more disk space.

So that you can delete your large and old files on your Mac, you can use a tool to do this, or you can delete them manually.

6: pull out all your old iOS backups

Of course, having a backup is a great idea, so anyway, if you accidentally delete your data, you have easy access to it, and you can restore it to your device using your backup.

However, over time, your Mac computer becomes overloaded with old backups that you no longer need.

This can take up gigabytes of disk space. Because of this, you might consider deleting any old backup files you have on your Mac that you no longer need.

Remember that every backup that remains on your computer can be accessed through your iTunes.

Therefore, to delete your old backups on your Mac computer, you can follow the following simple steps that we provide.

Launch iTunes on your Mac.

On the menu bar, go ahead and click iTunes and then Preferences.

After that, go to the device tab to find a list of backup files.

Then, once you find your entire list of backups, go ahead and select all the backups you no longer need.

Once you have confirmed all the selected backups, click the ” Delete backup button”.

5 Removing language packs

The macOS operating system comes with preinstalled language packs so that you can switch the system language to the desired one at the right time. Often 1-2 languages are used, which means unnecessary ones can be deleted, freeing up space on the hard disk. You can remove unneeded language packs using the CleanMyMac or Monolingual apps.

Step 8: remove old Dmgs and Ipsw

DMGs stands for Disk Images and IPSW stands for iPhone Software Packages, and both are unnecessary and take up space on your Mac.

To get rid of this, do the following.

REMOVING DMG – Once you have mounted the disk image and installed the application, you can now extract and trash your DMG. Just do this and drag the mounted volume to the trash can.

REMOVING IPSW – Just select Library, then go to iTunes and select Software Updates. Here you can find all software packages you do not need and uninstall them.

9: remove all duplicate files

All those unwanted copies of your documents, files and photos are actually just taking up space on your Mac.

Therefore, you need to get rid of these duplicate files so that you can clean up your Mac and free up the space they are occupying.

If you are going to do this manually, you will need more patience and of course more time, but you can also try downloading a tool to help you with this task.

9 Erase voiceovers

Your Mac can read your selected text aloud in different voices. If you do not use this feature, you can delete the voiceovers. To do this, enter the command in the “Terminal”:

sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Speech/Voices/*

<img decoding="async" class="SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp" src="https://inform.com.de/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/post-98659-607b13c5ba46d.jpg" alt="How to clear (delete) the cache on Mac (macOS) manually and using special programs. And because of this, we tend to keep the files we use frequently and collect them until our desktop becomes a disaster.

This is actually one of the reasons your Mac is slowing down, so you better consider cleaning your Mac. Instead of putting all your files on your desktop, why not try to organize them and let them be in the same folder.

This way, it will also be easier for you to find your files on your Mac computer. You will then be able to see the status of your Mac system in the main interface.

And then on the left pane of the software, you should be able to see the things that Mac Cleaner can help you with, just go and select from that list, let's say click ” System Junk ” for you to clean up all your junk.

After that, go ahead and click Scan “so the software can find and scan any junk files on your Mac.

Once the scanning process is complete, Mac Cleaner will show you all your junk files.

Step 2: Preview and select the files you want to delete

The iMyMac Mac Cleaner will be able to show you all your junk files by category. All you have to do is select from the list of categories on the screen and then click the ” Clean Button”.

TIP: You can do the same steps from step 1 to step 3 if you want to remove duplicate files, large old files, and more by selecting a task from the left pane of your screen.

8 Remove trash using a special utility

An easy way to leave for sweetness. The above steps are easier to perform using a special utility such as CleanMyMac. The MacPaw utility is able to automatically perform the necessary actions to clean the Mac, and also provides the ability to remove language packs in a few clicks, uninstall applications correctly, clear browser cache and email attachments.

CleanMyMac 3

This program has a very beautiful interface, and, at the same time, it is convenient and intuitive to use. As it turned out, its new name is CleanMyMac X (the glory of iPhones haunts someone :))

CleanMyMac 3

The application communicates in Russian and has the ability to work automatically. That is, you can clean and remove unnecessary components in automatic mode. This mode is called smart cleaning, and that's what I like the most:

CleanMyMac works in automatic mode

You will be surprised how much the program finds after checking. All this can be removed painlessly.

After using the “smart cleaning” mode, you can go through the rest of the sections, and after carefully reading the descriptions, decide what else do you want to clean? For example – remove programs (applications) that have become unnecessary. They will be removed “correctly”, along with their “tails”.

And if you do not understand – what it is or do not want to delve into, that these are additional sections on the left panel – then you can leave it as it is. Until the moment the need arises.

CleanMyMac is a paid program.

Malwarebytes for Mac

This program in the version for Windows is the best ad-spyware cleaner. It also exists for Mac. However, due to the greater security of the Mac, any such crap gets into it much less.

Part 1. What is Else on Mac Storage?

Is your Mac running slowly? Have you checked the capacity of your Mac device? It has various labels, right? You can see apps, audios, movies, photos, and also backups. Everything seems obvious, right? You know which files are actually taking up your disk space.

But what about “Other”? What does it mean? It can be frustrating to know that these “other” files are taking up too much disk space, so we need to free them. Want to get real storage space back? Well, we'll tell you more about Other Storage first. And then we'll tell you how to get rid of other storage (purgeable space) on your device.

What is Other in Mac Storage? Other storage types are those that do not fit into categories (for example, applications, audio, movies, photos, and also backups). These other files will include the following:

Documents, including .doc, .PDF, and .psd files.

MacOS X system files.

Temporary macOS X files.

Cache files including browser cache, user cache, and system cache.

Disk images.

Archives including .dmg and .zip.

Application plugins.

Extensions.

Anything that cannot be categorized into major categories.

<img decoding="async" class="SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp" src="https://inform.com.de/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/post-98659-607b13d4cec9a.jpg" alt="How to clear (delete) the cache on Mac (macOS) manually and using special programs. I have been using the DaisyDisk utility for a long time, which visually displays the structure of files and folders in the system. With its help, in a couple of clicks, you can find yourself in the most “gluttonous” directory and manually clear it.

It makes no sense for developers of such applications to cheat and cash in on paid updates. In fact, the utility only displays a diagram of the occupied space, and what exactly to delete is up to the user himself.

1. First, look through the Downloads and Docs package for large files, document archives, or under-downloaded data.

<img decoding="async" class="SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp" src="https://inform.com.de/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/post-98659-607b13d6ed47d.jpg" alt="How to clear (delete) the cache on Mac (macOS) manually and using special programs. Here are just examples of data that can be classified by the system in this way:

Documents and various file types including PDF, doc, PSD

Archives and disk images, including zip, dmg, iso

Different types of personal user data

Temporary files, audio recordings and more

Custom Libraries (Application Support, iCloud Files, etc.)

System cache (including Safari)

Files that Spotlight cannot recognize – for example, the hard disk of a virtual machine

We seem to have figured out what we are dealing with. How to get rid of it? Open Finder, hold down cmd + shift + G, and then visit the folders indicated below. Remove anything from them that you think doesn't belong on your Mac.

Clean up the Applications folder

But then there is already something where we can go and delete something – Programs and Users. 90% of my readers will have the Users folder at the top. Inside the Programs folder, we will see approximately the following picture:

By the way, in order to immediately see the object that you want to delete or view in the Finder, just hold down the Command (CMD) key and left-click on the object in the diagram or in the left column.

Here, whatever you want, you can delete, except for system programs such as iChat, Quick Time, etc. You will not be able to delete them – OS X will say that this cannot be done, since these are system files. But it will be easy to find some rarely used or unnecessary programs! This is where I always remove junk from the iLife suite – GarageBand, iWeb, and iDVD, unless you use them at all. Sometimes iMovie also ends up in the trash, but that's not often. iPhoto almost always remains on the Mac. The installation package of the new OS X can also take up a lot of space (OS X Yosemite Installer, for example), and if you have no plans to install it, then the same can be safely thrown into the trash can, since it will be easy to download it again on Mac!

Clearing the Users folder

Next comes the most mysterious folder – Users! Inside it, you will see all users registered on the computer, but you can only clean and inspect in your current one:

At this stage, you will have the opportunity to evaluate your files from a bird's-eye view – how much data you have in your downloads, how much music and movies, as well as look into libraries. Naturally, I cannot give you advice on what you need in photos, music or documents – these are your personal files and only you understand their value. I want to show those few folders that are often not very needed, but at the same time they have something to remove!

Music -> iTunes -> iTunes Media -> Mobile Applications – there may be programs from the iPhone and iPad that you downloaded from the App Store. In fact, there is no point in storing them on a Mac, since you can always download them from the store at any time! Sometimes this folder can take up a lot of space and in my case its volume was about 15 GB!

You can also inspect your library for large albums, and reassess their significance to you. You don't want to listen to something, but you’re tired of something – don’t litter the disc with these compositions. By the way, in the same place you need to pay attention to 2 folders: Music -> iTunes -> iTunes Media -> Home Video and Movies in the same place – they can contain your movies purchased in iTMS and movies that you added to iTunes. It is possible that you no longer need them, and it makes no sense to just keep movies from the store in the media library!

It is important to understand where exactly your music is stored – in your iTunes library or simply sorted into folders. For me, for example, all the music goes to the library and after that, I delete all the original files. Although there are times when there are no tracks in the library itself, and music files are scattered all over the Mac. Go to iTunes -> Settings -> Add-ons and see which checkboxes you have:

If, like mine, all the boxes are ticked, then the songs that you download from the Internet and then upload to iTunes are stored both in the library and in the original downloaded folder! In this case, you can safely delete the original files and leave only in iTunes.

If we figured out the media library, then we can safely stomp in the direction of iPhone backups in iTunes. To do this, you can either go to Libraries, which I do not really recommend without understanding what to do, or go to iTunes and delete through it. Let's clean up the place in the second way. To do this, go to iTunes -> Settings and in the window that appears on top, click on Devices:

If your Mac is already many years old and your family has a lot of phones and tablets, then a surprise may await you.Personally, I have almost no copies there (and if they do, they are fresh ones), but I have seen more than 10 different devices on some of them with very ancient copies (up to 2010 …)! Some copies may belong to your gadget, while others may be your wife, girlfriend or colleague – why do you need them ?! Feel free to select irrelevant copies and click on the Delete backup copy below, and then on the OK button. If you click on Cancel, the copies will remain on your computer! Or you can do it a little differently – right-click on the device, select Show in Finder and from there delete the folder with the copy.

The difference is that when deleting through iTunes, you do not see the process itself, and if the copy is very large (more than 10-20 GB), then during uninstallation the Mac will slow down, and you will not see the process itself and its end time. And if you delete the copy directly from the Finder, you will see the progress of the copy deletion.

For those with a Mac with a solid-state drive, transferring backups to another drive is also helpful. A similar trick will help you to kill two birds with one stone – to have backups from your iPhone / iPad, as well as not to clog your laptop built-in disk with them!

In addition to your iTunes library, you can look into your Photo or iPhoto libraries. Look at your photos, and you may find a lot of unnecessary ones. Personally, all the photos from the iPhone (via the photo stream) got into Photos / iPhoto, and I often shoot something as a reminder, and the value of the frame disappears almost immediately after shooting, but these photos still ended up in the library. Photos on iPhone are very high quality, but the downside of quality is frame weight! By deleting hundreds of unnecessary pictures, you will save about 200 – 500 MB. However, you should not only delete the photos themselves from your library, but also empty the Trash in iPhoto and delete “recently deleted frames” in Photos.

And if a photo takes up a couple of megabytes, then a short 10-second video on an iPhone 5 (for example) takes up 20 MB, not to mention the fact that videos for newer models take up much more space! And if you, without hesitation, save all this to the media library or to a separate folder, then you should visit them and check their volume. It may well turn out that some videos were filmed by accident, or have already lost their relevance.

By the way, in addition to cleaning your media libraries, you can also transfer them to another medium and not store them on your Mac at all!

In addition to all of the above, I also recommend inspecting the Downloads folder! The most necessary and most harmful folder at the same time – everything that you download from the Internet most often ends up there, but not always, downloaded files crawl to other places – music to music, movies to films, etc … I see very often, as the Downloads folder takes up almost the most space, and only because the files from there are never revised and cleaned. Take a look there and take a close look at the contents! By the way, I have myself, this folder is the largest, but only because there I store a lot of useful things (iOS firmware, updates for Mac, etc.) and inside the Downloads folder I have a clear structure.

Well, that’s all. So, offhand, I delete from some poppies 20 GB of data that is not particularly needed on the computer. Hope you can clean up junk files from your Mac too

As a rule, cleaning the cache is not worth it at all.

If your disk space is not full, or if you do not intend to delete the cache of a particular application, these files on your Mac are best left alone. There are many ways to free up free space on macOS without having to delete caches.

For example, you can move libraries and device backups to another location, delete unwanted large files, or add more disk space to your MacBook.

Sources used and useful links on the topic: <a href="https://yablyk.com/558955-kak-ochistit-udalit-kesh-na-mac-macos/" target="_blank"
