The most widely used metadata standard is EXIF, which is an integral part of digital images and contains a complete description of camera settings, namely:<\/p>\n

- data on the digital environment;<\/li>\n
- diaphragm;<\/li>\n
- geographic coordinates of the location;<\/li>\n

Any parameter from those listed and not included in this list has a specific category and format. A key factor in metadata<\/strong> is a well-organized structure that allows both humans and technology to read the data. This distinction allows you to work with a huge amount of information in a short period of time, use the received metadata for collecting, storing, searching, processing and combining in an automatic mode.<\/p>\n
A good example is, for example, the [Google Images] service (https:\/\/u.to\/vH9JFQ<\/a>) and Yandex.Images<\/a>. It is enough to add any photo and search, thanks to metadata, will show identical or similar images by objects, structure, content, color design, etc.<\/p>\n
In the right hands, metadata can be like a “lifeline”, otherwise, like “a stone tied to the feet and pulling to the bottom.” With the knowledge and skills, metadata for digital photos<\/strong>, files and documents is an incredibly powerful tool. They find their application among intruders, hackers, law enforcement agencies and security professionals in penetration testing.<\/p>\n
One example where metadata has become a fatal mistake for humans is the story of John McAfee, founder and developer of the antivirus software of the same name – McAfee.<\/p>\n
For a certain period of time, he was on the run hiding from the government on murder charges, despite this – he had many fans and imitators. So, journalists from Vice had the honor of spending several days with the fugitive in a secret hideout, after which they published an article about this adventure containing a photo from an iPhone.<\/p>\n
The problem is that they did not take into account the fact that the iPhone, like many other modern devices, embeds geolocation data in every picture. Once they realized this fact (or most likely someone told them), the photo was deleted and replaced with a new one without displaying the geographic coordinates in EXIF, but it was too late.<\/p>\n
Shortly after identification, McAfee was detained in Guatemala on charges of illegal border crossing. Thus, do not underestimate the metadata, because with the help of it you can find both a person and a device that is stolen or lost.<\/p>\n

How to find the original of a given image<\/h2>\n
For example, you have some kind of photograph, perhaps cropped, shaken, or photoshopped, and you want to find its original, or an option in the best quality. How to do it? Search in Yandex and Google, as described above, or using PhotoTracker Lite and get a list of all found images. Further, be guided by the following:<\/p>\n

- The original image tends to be larger and better quality than the modified cropped copy. Of course, you can set the picture in any size in Photoshop, but when it is increased relative to the original, artifacts will always be observed. They can be easily spotted even with a cursory visual inspection.<\/li>\n
- Original photographs often have watermarks indicating the authorship of the photograph (surname, website address, company name, etc.). Of course, anyone can add a watermark to absolutely any image, but in this case, you can search for a sample photo on the site or by the author's last name, for sure he puts his portfolio online somewhere.<\/li>\n
- And finally, a very simple sign. If your sample photo is black-and-white (sepia, etc.), and you found the same, but full-color photo, then you are clearly not the original. Adding color to a b \/ w photo is much more difficult than converting a color photo to black and white<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
How to prevent embedding GPS coordinates in your photos<\/h2>\n
If you want to completely disable the addition of GPS data, you can go to the Camera application of your phone and disable saving location in the settings.<\/p>\n
