How to remember dates and work with maps

How to learn historical dates

There are many ways and techniques to quickly memorize dates, which can be used both together and separately.

Systematization

The main difficulty in memorizing historical dates is the inevitable confusion: a large number of numbers are mixed up in the head and do not correlate well with specific events. To avoid this confusion, record and memorize dates in groups – by historical period, by historical event, by ruler. For example, the main dates of the Great Patriotic War, the main milestones of the reign of Alexander II, the chronology of the Time of Troubles can be distinguished into a separate group. Memorizing dates in groups helps you sort them out and relate to historical facts.

The second way to organize the memorization of dates is to track the connections between historical events and make chains of interrelated dates. In a single chain, for example, you can link dates related to the period of the Tatar-Mongol yoke:

1223 – battle on the Kalka river,

1237 – the invasion of Batu,

1240 – the fall of Kiev and the establishment of the yoke,

1380 – Battle of Kulikovo,

1480 – Standing on the Ugra.

The same chains are easily formed for the era of the Time of Troubles, the Napoleonic Wars, the Great Reforms of the mid-19th century, and the industrialization of the USSR. When making chains, it is very useful to pay attention to how long it took from one event to another: 5, 10, 20, 100 years, more than 100. This also helps to avoid confusion.

The third option for systematization when memorizing dates is drawing parallels between historical events in different countries or in different historical periods. For example, in 1861 serfdom was abolished in Russia, and the Civil War began in the United States. In parallel, you can remember the dates of events that occurred on the same day or month, but in different years.

Literal method

The method is somewhat similar to the one presented above, only now the numbers need to be tied to a letter that either resembles a certain number, or just the first one that came to mind (but it is better to use anchor by the first sign, because this is how historical dates are remembered much easier). Thus, a person should form a certain set of special secret ciphers, mentally pronouncing which he will easily remember the dates he needs. For convenience, you can write out these combinations of letters on a piece of paper. Here are examples of several numbers that can easily be attached to letters similar to them:

How to remember dates from history methods

0 looks like the letter “O”;

1 is similar to the English letter “I” or to the printed Russian “T” (both the number and the letter have one stroke at the base);

2 an exact copy of the capital letter “Г”;

3 is similar to “Z”, since they are spelled exactly the same;

4 starts with the letter “H” and is very similar to this letter;

6 is similar to “B”, with both print and uppercase

8, if you add a stick in front (or, for example, the number 1), it will look like the letter “B”.

The list can be continued for a long time, but it is possible that you can come up with other associations with letters, everything is completely individual.

Visualization

One of the most effective methods of fast memorization is visualization of the material. For memorizing historical dates, the following are suitable:

colorful stickers with dates that can be pasted around the house or hung on a special board;

cards with a date written on one side and an event on the other; you can take such cards with you and repeat the material at any free moment: on the road, while waiting for transport, in line;

tables, especially if they are compiled taking into account the recommendations above: by eras, by periods, by rulers, and so on; dates are recorded in one column of the table, events in another;

mind maps; with their help, you can also group dates by periods or by rulers, accompanying them with memorable pictures, symbols, drawings. When remembering the visual elements of the map, the desired date immediately pops up in memory.

The “digital-picture” method

This method can also be called the most effective for those who have a well-developed ability to associate. The essence of the method is to parse each digit in the date necessary for memorization, into a separate, separate element, tying it to any action, picture.

So, the number 7 can be associated with a scythe, 8 – with infinity or a sophisticated female figure, 9 – with a wave approaching before the storm, 2 – with an elegant swan, and so on. Ultimately, when a historical date is given to a person, a picture of associations that he himself drew in the process of memorization should pop up in his head. If all the conditions are met correctly, the correct answer will not be long in coming.

It is advisable not to come up with all the associations in one day, because there will be a mess in your head, the numbers and their pictures will be confused. And it is also advisable to come up with associations from different areas, that is, you do not need to tie all the numbers, say, only to the animal or plant world, this can also be very easy to confuse.

Semantic method

This method is suitable for those who cannot come up with associations and associate events with memorable dates. The point is simple: it is necessary to logically parse the date in parts. For example, the numbers 96 and 69 can mean cardinal points or river banks, because they always read the same, whatever one may say.

Emotions

Information that is emotionally colored or affects our feelings is remembered much better than dry, dispassionate facts. The same applies to historical dates: the more emotions an event evokes, the more images appear in your head when you mention it, the faster and more firmly you will remember its date. To create an emotional resonance with historical events, acquaintance with works of art of various genres is best suited: books, films, performances, paintings by famous artists. Make a list of historical works related to a particular event and become familiar with them, while keeping a table with key dates handy.

Background method

The main task of this method is to try to draw an analogy between historical dates and events that happen to a person in real life. These can be the birthdays of relatives or friends, some especially significant dates for the person himself or the holidays of any country.

If you can't remember a single memorable day in your current life for a historical event, then you can simply remember it as the end, middle or beginning of a certain month or season.

Analytical methods

This type of memorization of historical dates is suitable for real fanatics of this subject. It is necessary to restore as plausibly as possible the course of events taking place on the specified date, up to reincarnation in certain historical figures.

There are 2 analytical methods: the cause-and-effect method (this is when the entire course of battles is clearly laid down in the head and the person understands the entire sequence of actions) and the method of semantic blocks (recognized as the most difficult among the presented ones. It is necessary to divide a long period of time (for example, the 19th century) into smaller blocks and bind them to all necessary dates. Then in the head the dates will be arranged as if by chapters, as in a book, and nothing will be forgotten).

Mnemonics

The spaced repetition method and the association method are best suited for memorizing historical dates.

When memorizing using interval repetition, you experimentally select an individual time after which you need to repeat information so that it is better remembered. There are special sites on the Internet where you can create a set of cards for interval repetition with historical dates and choose a suitable interval for their display. The program shows cards at regular intervals, and the user remembers the answer and tells the program how quickly he succeeded.

The associative method is used both for associating a date with an event, and for mechanically storing numbers. For example, you can write a date and try to come up with your own association for each pair of numbers, or remember some event from your own life with which the date coincides. Another option is to write down the date, event and associate them with some object or phenomenon. For example, the years of the Second World War – with a fire, the date of the Battle of the Ice – with a skating rink, and so on.

How to memorize names

When meeting a person, try to repeat his name several times. So you will not only remember new information, but also make the interlocutor feel good about you.

Visualize the name. For example, imagine written on paper.

Use associations. It is better to associate the name with the occupation, hobbies of the person. So he will turn from an ordinary Vasya into Vasya, who has been playing chess since the age of three, and it will be easier for you to remember the name thanks to additional information.

Connect a new acquaintance with a person you know for a long time. So, Vasily, whom you met at a party, may look like sports commentator Vasily Utkin or love origami like your longtime friend of the same name. Using this method, the main thing is not to fall into the trap: a person may look like your friend with a completely different name, and there is a risk of calling him incorrectly.

Building associations

one

Create vibrant looks. If you can associate bright images with dates, you will remember them much easier. The weirder, dumbest and more ridiculous the image you come up with, the better!

For example, if you need to remember the date 1732, the year of birth of George Washington, every time you think of that date, imagine a little boy wearing a Washington wig chopping down a cherry tree saying “I can't lie!”

Or imagine a man in a George Washington suit throwing up a stack of 1732 dollar bills, each of which, of course, has a portrait of George Washington.

2

Use your body's memory. When memorizing data, you can create very strong associations using your body. Rhythmic steps during memorization, gestures, and even singing dates to familiar melodies can all improve your memory. For example, here's what you can do:

When memorizing the date 44 BC. throw up your hand like an ancient Roman orator – this year the Roman emperor Julius Caesar was assassinated.

Sing your favorite song by inserting dates instead of the original words.

3

Organize your information. If you can somehow categorize all the dates to remember, you have a much better chance of learning everything. It is very difficult to remember unstructured data. Don't spend day after day trying to memorize random dates, but rather try to break them down into groups with common characteristics first. For example:

If you remember the dates of important historical events, first arrange them in order. This will help you organize your dates and find logical connections between them. The more you tie dates to context, the more meaningful they become. And you memorize them better.

If you remember your relatives' birthdays, draw a family tree. Imagine that you climb this tree every day, memorizing one date on each branch.

four

You can also associate each digit in dates with a letter. Associating letters with numbers can improve your memory. For example, you can memorize the dates “1066” (the Battle of Hastings), “1215” (the creation of Magna Carta), or “1776” (the signing of the Declaration of Independence) as a sequence of letters “TOBB”, “TGT” and “TЁOB”, in according to the following diagram:

0 = O, because the letter “O” and the number “0” are very similar

1 = T because both the number “1” and the letter “T” have a vertical bar

2 = G, because the letter “G” written in italics (g) resembles the number “2”

3 = З, because the letter “З” and the number “3” are written almost the same

4 = H, because the number 4 looks like the letter “H”, and the word “four” begins with this letter

5 = b, because if we add to the letter “b” the horizontal line remaining from the letter “T”, which we associated with “1”, we get the letter “yat” that no longer exists in our alphabet.

6 = b, because the letter “B” and the number “6” are very similar

7 = Ё, because “Ё” is the seventh letter of the alphabet

8 = B because the letter “B” and the number “8” are very similar

9 = D, because in writing the lowercase letter “d” (with a squiggle at the bottom) resembles a nine

five

Come up with detailed associations. The dates themselves will pop up in your mind if you can come up with detailed and memorable associations for them. One way is to use the previous method to expand the resulting associations into funny and catchy phrases, for example:

You need to remember the year in which the Battle of the Kursk Bulge (1943) took place.

Using the above scheme, you get “TDCZ”.

From these letters you add the phrase “Tanks, smoke and black earth”

This phrase roughly describes the flavor of the battle, so you will associate it with the world's largest tank battle, which took place on the Kursk Bulge in 1943.

Memory training

one

Concentrate on the dates you need to remember. We often immediately forget up to 50% of the information we have learned, so it is very important to concentrate when memorizing dates. You can start by simply reminding yourself that you want and / or need to remember the dates. Such a simple concentration will allow you to additionally remember 20 to 60% of the information. There are several practical ways to improve concentration while studying. For example:

Try to remove any distractions and start your studies in a calm, relaxing environment.

Try not to take your eyes off the date you are trying to remember. Scan the date with your eyes.

When you come across a date that you need to remember, stop and write it down, thinking that you need to remember it.

Every time you remember a date, imagine how you write it down. For example, imagine this image: you write a date on a blackboard.

2

Repeat all dates regularly. The more often you repeat the information that you are trying to remember, the deeper it will sink in your memory. Since we forget the main part of information within 24 hours from the moment of memorizing it, it is important to repeat everything without delay, and at the same time as often as possible. If you keep trying and repeat all dates daily, you will improve your memory. If you do this for a month, you will most likely not forget these dates even after many years.

If you need to learn a certain number of dates for the exam or for another reason, repeat them as often as possible, adding new ones for at least a few minutes a day.

3

Use flashcards. Flashcards are the most popular way to remember information. When used correctly, they are very helpful.

When composing a set of cards for yourself (or take a special computer program for this), write down the date on one side of the card, and on the other side what this date is associated with (event).

Test yourself by shuffling the cards, look at the dates and remember what happened that day. Then you can look at the other side of the cards and remember when the specified events occurred.

When looking through the cards, put aside those that you remember well, and look through the rest several times until you remember all the dates.

Train with cards as often as possible, but do not drag out these workouts, give them a few minutes at a time. If you try to memorize too much information at once, you are unlikely to succeed.

four

Use dates. The more you use the dates that you can remember, the better they will remain in your memory. Share dates and events with your friends and family, think about it, and write them down as often as possible. Do not give up trying and you will remember everything!

How to remember upcoming events

Imagine in detail what will happen during this event, how you will get to the place of its holding, what will be discussed at it. A large amount of information will fix the event in memory.

Countdown. Imagine how much time is left until day X, make a rough plan to prepare for it. This will make it possible to actualize the event, make it real now, and it will not be so easy to forget about it.

Set reminders. It is not necessary to keep small details in your head, let the smartphone inform about the event a few days, a day and a few hours before it. Regular reminders will firmly plant information about the upcoming event in the brain.

Classification

Bulky information that is not related to each other is very difficult to remember. Visual-motor memory can be used to assimilate dates. All dates must be written on an A4 sheet, regularly repeated and rewritten.

The most obvious criteria for classifying dates are by ruler or by historical period. In the first case, events can be divided into blocks – economic, political, social and spiritual spheres. The second way is to write down the dates that correspond to a specific period of time: the reign of the Romanov dynasty, the time of the existence of the USSR or the events of the Great Patriotic War.

Structuring

Visuals should start preparing visuals. Organize dates by including them in a table. Then prepare stickers with the date on one side and the event on the other. It is better to place cards and tables in prominent places, and also carry them with you, periodically looking at recess or on the way to school.

How to work with a historical map

Learn to read the map. It makes no sense to specially memorize the cards of individual historical events – it is very difficult and is unlikely to be useful for you on the exam. It is much more effective to learn how to read any card.

Review the legend information and review the legend. This will help determine the approximate content of the information contained in the card. Symbols on maps refer to specific groups:

borders,

natural objects,

cities,

direction of movement of troops and strikes,

places of battles,

territories limited by one or another historical period or event (for example, conquest during a war),

centers of production, mining.

By examining the legend on a particular map, you will get an initial idea of the event or period that it reflects.

Match the objects depicted on the map with an event or era. Remember and write down everything that you remember about what is happening at this time in this area, then compare your outline with the information from the textbook and fill in the gaps. Associate the image on the contour map with a vivid impression of the event. Here, as in the case of historical dates, works of art and literature, saturated with images and emotions, will help.

Draw historical maps yourself. When studying a particular event or period, visualize it using conventional symbols used on historical maps. You can draw a map yourself, or you can use an atlas of contour maps for history or a printout of contour maps from the Internet for training.

Deconstruct the exam tasks for reading the historical map. To get started, study the legend and identify the key facts that are mentioned there. For example, if the direction of movement of troops is given among the symbols, it means that we are talking about some kind of battle or invasion, if the boundaries of the principalities are indicated – this is a period of feudal fragmentation, if certain cities – something important happened in them. See if there are any dates on the map; if so, it makes the task easier, focusing on the dates, you can remember what important events happened at that time and where, and then compare this list with the map.

Use apps and online resources. The free application “Atlas +” contains interactive tasks for working with historical and geographical maps, with its help you can practice placing names, dates, icons on contour maps, identify objects on maps, compare them and find matches. There are sites that map historical events to places and times, and sites with map selections.

If you devote enough time to memorizing dates and working with cards, constantly train, use different techniques and algorithms, you can learn a large amount of information in a short time and learn how to correctly solve educational tests and exam assignments.

Memorization by ear

Before you start studying, you should determine the easiest way for yourself to perceive information. All people are divided into visuals, audials and kinesthetics. Most have better visual memory. But if you are better at absorbing information by ear, make audio recordings with cheat sheets. Read out dates, pausing, fixing on a dictaphone.

How to remember phone numbers

Dial the number manually. The more often you call a person, the faster you will remember their contact.

Divide the room into comfortable groups. Traditionally, the phone number is written in this form: (code) 3-2-2. Try to segment it in a different way, try to find some kind of internal logic in the numbers.

Come up with a rhythm number or try to rhyme its individual segments.

Imagine you are dialing a number on your mobile phone. The imaginary movement of the fingers will help to restore the sequence of numbers at the right time.

Find associations. A set of numbers can hide your house number, date of birth and other data that you remember well.

Useful photo

The dates written on the sheet can be photographed and the image can be used as a splash screen. If you often look at the phone screen, then remember the dates faster.

How to memorize the texts of speeches

Reread the text out loud. This will add a number of associations to your main messages. During the speech, you will see the text in front of your eyes, remember that while reading the first paragraph, you were lying on the couch, and during the third, you were standing at the windowsill. And these additional details will help you remember the content of the speech.

Sing along or read it in a non-standard style – like an old-school actress, sports commentator. The more violent your imagination is, the easier it is to remember the main points of your speech.

Rewrite the text by hand: this way you reread it more thoughtfully. If you want a thrill, copy your notes with your non-working hand.

Make a cheat sheet: write down the main thoughts, dates, names. Retell the text out loud using the notes.

Give a speech to a friend or family member. If no one agrees to listen to you, assign an inanimate object as the audience. The main thing is to check how you will speak, where you stumble most often and how quickly you can get out of an awkward situation. Such a test will remove the psychological pressure and help you feel freer, which will facilitate the memorization process.

Intervals

To assimilate information, the brain requires multiple repetitions. It is advisable to start learning dates in advance. Frequent repetition will activate long-term memory. But it is important to take breaks while memorizing. You need to repeat the information in half an hour, two hours, before bedtime, after one, two, four days, after a week and one and a half.

Chronological tables

The sequence of events is important in history. Chronological tables will help to remember it. In this case, all dates form a timeline.

To understand which memorization method will be most effective for you, you can only try different options in practice. Don't limit yourself to just one method. You can achieve significant results by using them in combination.

Ruseducenter teachers are proficient in memorizing various types of information, in practice with proven time management and other useful skills.
