How to get rid of envy – advice from a psychologist

What is envy

Envy is a product of the inner world of the envious person. Other people have nothing to do with it, they are busy with their own affairs and problems. Those whom we envy may not even know about our existence, and even more so they did not want to cause this envy (in any case, it was with us). Why do we envy, how it relates to our inner world:

Jealousy is often intertwined with greed, anger, and jealousy. But all together they are rooted in the past or childhood.

Envy is characteristic of unfulfilled, unloved, unhappy people.

An envious person will always find something or someone to envy. Because he always feels unhappy, unrecognized, unloved. And he thinks that if he had “this and that” and he would certainly be understood, noticed, recognized, loved.

Envy is an emotion that each of us has experienced for ourselves. Repeated often, it becomes a character trait or personality orientation. Then the person is called envious. But not all people are like that.

The composition of envy depends on what exactly we paid attention to: the result of an activity or a process, a person's actions. In the second case, “white envy” arises more often. This is a complex of joy and pride in a person, admiration for his skills and abilities, and much less regret about his own lost opportunities. For example, older people may in such a context be jealous of the young and energetic.

If we are amazed at the result, then more often there is “black envy” and a desire to surpass this result (perhaps in any way). There is a third option – envy, accompanied by resentment and annoyance, wishes of misfortune to this person. She also belongs to the “black”.

Envy forms the following character traits:

bragging (including with elements of lies and exaggeration);

fear of failure and inadequacy;

belittling (within the framework of one's interpretation) the achievements of the object of envy (exaggerating oneself against this background, “let them envy me” and manifestation of schadenfreude);

exaggeration of other people's successes;

desire to start to envy (ostentatious actions for the sake of envy).

These personality traits of the envious person are most noticeable in communication. In interpersonal relationships, the difference between “white” and “black” envy is also clearly visible. In the first case, a person wants to elevate himself and develop, to have the same as the object of envy. In the second case – to humiliate the object of envy and deprive him of the object of envy. If “white” envy promotes personal development, then “black” envy hinders it and makes it degrade.

Envy and subconsciousness, consciousness

Envy grows out of self-deprecation. But where does self-humiliation grow from is the main question that needs to be resolved. Envy is an admission of one's own powerlessness and failure. That is why people are so afraid to admit it even to themselves. Strong and self-confident people with adequate self-esteem are almost unfamiliar with the concept of envy. Is that in relation to them.

The rejection of the very thought of envy, and even more so of its causes, is the most popular and simplest defense mechanism of our psyche. But you have to fight it if you want to get rid of envy. In addition to denial, mechanisms of mythologization (recognition of superpowers in someone or something) and self-justification of oneself due to this, rationalization (belittling the achievements of the object of envy) are popular.

Consciously envy is balanced by pride in one's actions. As long as pride outweighs, we admire other people, but do not envy them. If we have nothing to be proud of, and before our eyes someone's successes, then self-humiliation and envy comes. Envy is a recognition and reaction to one's own failure.

Why jealousy is dangerous

Envy is a common vice that has found its reflection in a number of world cultures and traditions. For example, the Catholic Church ranked this negative feeling as one of the 7 mortal sins. Indeed, it is often envy that provokes other vices and even crimes!

And in fact, vice often pushes people to commit terrible acts, which they later bitterly regret. The danger of envy also lies in the fact that even if it is not spilled out, it will gnaw a person from the inside, make him suffer from pain and frustration.

And all because an envious individual wants to possess things (or something intangible, for example, a happy marriage or certain personality traits) that belong to other people.

But such pain is devoid of any common sense, since it has no rational goal and only causes suffering. At the same time, a person who envies others does not get an inch closer to what he is so greedy to get: finances, social status, external beauty, and so on.

And instead of sincerely rejoicing for our surroundings or taking someone else's success as a lesson for ourselves, we show envy, wishing other people failures at the subconscious level. But, having cultivated in ourselves a pernicious feeling, we suffer, first of all, ourselves.

The main insidiousness of envy is that it contributes to the development of other vices, such as: hatred, intolerance, irritation and despondency. Over time, it becomes unrealistic to satisfy a terrible feeling – after all, there will always be someone better (richer, smarter, more beautiful, more successful), which is fraught with new and new attacks.

Where does envy come from

In Orthodoxy, envy is one of the 10 deadly sins, because this feeling causes suffering to our soul, instills in it anger and many other negative feelings that corrode from the inside.

But in order to defeat this feeling, you need to understand the root cause of its occurrence and remove exactly the cause, and not fight the consequence, i.e. with a sense of envy. When you understand what contributed to the appearance of envy, then it will cease to torment.

Possible reasons for envy

Jealousy arises from our limiting beliefs and feelings of unworthiness.

Look, when a person is jealous of someone, this speaks of his conviction: I cannot do this (lack of faith in myself), it is not available to me, or I am not worthy of it. And perhaps all three beliefs work at once.

Accordingly, these feelings cause anger, resentment towards everyone and everything, and other destructive emotions.

Envious people

What are the signs that you are jealous?

1 The first reaction to the success of another person is the decline of emotion inside (often lasts a second or two)

2 You start looking for reasons why this person does not deserve this success (“She herself cannot do anything! That's all (husband's money, dad's acquaintances, chance, … continue yourself)

3 You start comparing yourself to this person. The reaction of unenviable girlfriends on the street, looking at a happy couple, often makes me smile. In which the guy is clearly handsome, and the girl is so-so. The reaction is familiar “What did he find in this horror story?” – it is implied that I am such a beauty, but alone (or the relationship is not very good)

4 We only envy what we would like to have ourselves. Those. we have an unfulfilled need, desire. We won't even notice the other! A good marker to understand what you really want

What are the signs that you are jealous?

How does an envious person behave?

1 The first reaction is a few moments – pursed lips, gazed gaze, anger may flicker.

2 An envious person will be annoyingly interested in your life. Especially savor and carefully ask about some unfortunate moments, difficult, difficult.

3 will begin to translate the conversation to other topics, switch you.

4 Will behave familiarly, letting go of jokes and phrases like: “Well, now the boss? Big man? “,” What became rich? ” etc. And “Will you share?”, “When will we wash?”

How to protect yourself from envy?

Use the simplest methods. Most often they are enough for this.

1 Mirror.

Imagine that there is a mirror between you and the envious person. The dark side is towards you, but the reflection is in it.

Anything that he will send you, willingly or unwillingly, will stick to the mirror and roll over it. Or it will fly back to him.

From time to time I recommend cleaning or changing the mirror.

You can set in advance before the meeting, or you can give the setting “Every time an envious person appears, the mirror automatically rises and works.”

2 Any protection from the collection “Golden collection of energy protections” is suitable for this.

This collection is my pride. Everything in it is simple and works great! Protection for different occasions.

Envy as it is

Envy is an unpleasant feeling of annoyance due to the fact that the other is superior in some way.

Someone may equate envy and jealousy, but these are completely different concepts. Envy is worse than jealousy. By definition, jealousy carries the connotation of being like everyone else and no worse than others. Envy wants others to have nothing better! What feeling do you most often feel? Envy or jealousy?

check yourself

You might ask yourself:

Do you want everything to be good with you and your neighbors and friends? Or do you want to be the one and only favorite of life?
How do I feel when others receive awards?
Was I even willing to do something dishonest to prevent another from succeeding?
And when my colleague has problems, do I sympathize or rejoice in myself?
Do I encourage my children to praise others or compete and envy?
If a person wants to overcome envy, then this is good and it is possible. Of course, the society is not ideal now and there will always be someone better. But you can learn to look at yourself from the outside and manage your emotions.

Love people

Love is a real antidote to envy!

If you love people, it's easier to overcome jealousy and start enjoying the success of others. To understand how to love others, put yourself in their shoes.
How would you like to be loved? You would like others to rejoice at your successes, praise you, and even help you. You would not want to have a hypocritical attitude – when they say one thing to your face, and another out of envy behind your back.
Therefore, treat others as well. This does not mean that you need to stop developing yourself and only help others to be successful. But don't worry too much about the success of others.
It might come back to you. If a person sees that you are his friend, and not a rival, then on the occasion when you need his support, he will provide it to you. This applies to both small things and large cases.
For example, as regards more women. Your friend always looks like you seem to be better than you, and you understand this fact. You may want to somehow infringe on her beauty, drawing attention to some flaw in her character, for example. However, would it be a beautiful thing to do? No, because it will be pure envy and those around you, noticing your attitude, will say for sure that you are just jealous of her. Therefore, if you sincerely praise a friend for her good taste in clothes, cosmetics, and so on, then in her face you can find a good ally, and if someday you need advice in the field of appearance, such as which thing suits you best, then she really will help.
As for the men. Men often measure their position by the amount of money they make. Of course, material status is important and no one wants to live in poverty. However, this is not the place for envy. If you are sincerely happy for the promotion of your friend up the career ladder, then perhaps, when you achieve success, you will not get envy from him. Also, men really often help their real friends in financial matters and help each other find good jobs.
Therefore, overcoming envy is even very useful from a practical point of view. Put yourself in the shoes of a successful person and think about whom you will help: those who are happy for you or those who envy you? It is the same and vice versa.

A person will be disposed towards you if he does not feel a threat to his happiness from you.

Find real friends

It is important to understand the trait of a true friend. A true friend will never deliberately act in such a way as to arouse envy in you. Therefore, if a person in your presence constantly elevates himself and humiliates you in this way, then think about whether it is worth continuing such a relationship in such a manner! You might want to talk to this person that you don't like their way of communicating with you. If this person wants to become a true friend, then he will understand and will not exalt himself. If he continues his line of behavior, then perhaps this person does not really want to be your friend, that is, he wants to be higher than you, and not equal.
Also on the other side. Look at your surroundings. If you constantly feel envy or rivalry from someone, is this a real friend? A true friend rejoices in the success and happiness of his friend. In addition, people who do not want and therefore cannot overcome envy can, not only by their attitude or words, but also by their deeds, try to deprive you of success.
Therefore, you need to accurately determine who is your friend and who is not and surround yourself with allies, not rivals.
Weigh the behavior of others and your feelings of communicating with a particular person. If you understand that friendship is a burden for you, then take some reasonable action, such as a conversation, and look at the person's reaction. The one to whom you are dear – a true friend – your opinion will be important.

Deal with the negativity

Envy is a negative feeling, a negative. To overcome envy as such, you need to think about what kind of direction of thoughts you have.
If you constantly think bad about people and, in principle, cannot switch to positive, then this is an alarming signal. Therefore, start thinking more positively about people and life in general, and over time you will see that it is easier for you to overcome envy.
For example, work on suspiciousness. A suspicious person looks for hidden motives in the good deeds of others. This is on the verge of paranoia and alienates others from communicating with such a person. And he, in turn, begins to ascribe to people even more bad motives, although the reason is in himself. Therefore, if you don’t doubt too much, don’t doubt everyone, then it will be easier to overcome envy.
Your brain and attitude will be positively attuned, and this will be good for many areas of your life.

Love yourself

Envy in a person shows a lack of self-love. It seems to such a person that he does not live up to some of his ideals and sees that others are achieving what he wants.
Perhaps, indeed, some mistakes in the past or difficult circumstances did not allow earlier and now to have what you want. Life may not turn out according to our scenario, and you may not be at all to blame for this. For example, if only your mother was responsible for caring for your family, this could affect your education and job choices. Or health problems can limit your options and so-called success.
However, you have a choice – either continue to dislike yourself and envy others, or love yourself and do what you can in your circumstances.

Can you succeed if you don't love yourself?

How to recognize jealousy in yourself

Envy can hide behind anger, irritation, contempt, condemnation, criticism, ignorance (deliberate indifference), devaluation. Envy has a thousand masks.

When you look at a person who causes any negative feelings or thoughts in you, ask yourself the question – are you really jealous of him?

Why is it so? Because there are only two main driving forces in a person: desire (attraction) and fear (disgust). And any negative emotions are a mask on the Face of Desire or a mask on the Face of Fear.

Here's an example of one woman:

It annoyed me that my friend laughed loudly in transport, in companies, at work.

I thought: “Isn't she ashamed ?! She's not alone here! Why does she allow herself such licentiousness! “

I condemned her, and from my point of view – justified, because I had a tough argument – “what she does is indecent” (society agrees with me).

It took me a while to realize what was behind my (and public) dislike.

Her laughter attracted a lot of attention to her, both female and male.

So the real reason for my irritation was that I envied her immediacy, and even more so that people pay attention to her, but not me, because I could not allow myself to appear so brightly, freely and naturally.

How to identify the cause of envy

The cause of envy is unfulfilled desire. It's a simple formula. Whenever you feel jealous, the reason is desire.

Follow these simple instructions to reveal your desire:

A) Introduce the person you envy. Write on a piece of paper: “I envy my colleague / boss / neighbor because …”

B) “Because …” – then write down what he has? It can be a thing, an event, personality traits, lifestyle, talents, attitude.

Here are some examples of women and men:

I envy my friend because she got married (event).

I envy my colleague because he is more confident in himself (personality trait).

I envy my father because he has money (thing).

I envy my aunt because she moved to America, works several times a week, dresses well and travels a lot (lifestyle).

I envy my neighbor, because she bakes deliciously (talents), and everyone in the entrance says only good things about her (attitude).

I envy my friend because she is free to express herself (personality trait).

C) Write down your wish:

I want to marry.

I want to be confident in myself.

I want to have free money.

I want to go to America, work less, travel more and dress well.

I want the neighbors to talk about me, I want to be admired.

I want to express myself freely.

How to transform the energy of envy

Any feeling / phenomenon in our world is dual. This means that any feeling / phenomenon is split into polarities + and -.

And if something comes with a minus sign, you can draw another line to get a plus.

That is, to translate the feeling / phenomenon into a positive polarity, giving you energy and strength (and not depriving them).

The qualities, events, things that cause envy (destructive energy) come from a feeling of admiration (creative energy).

But due to incorrect processing by the thought process, they turn into a minus. Remember , what makes you jealous actually delights you!

By recognizing your desire, it will be easier for you to find admiration in yourself. Admiration can help you deal with jealousy.

Transforming envy into admiration, you are filled with creative magnetic energy that will attract what you want into your field.

The next time you feel jealous, replace the words “I envy” with the words “I admire”:

I admire my friend's wedding.

I admire my colleague's confidence.

I admire my father's financial freedom.

I admire my aunt's lifestyle.

I admire my neighbor's sociability.

I admire my friend's spontaneity.

Admiration for some talent, quality of another person is a clear sign that you have a similar gift, trait, ability.

How to get around the envy trap

The trap of envy lies in the fact that, on the energy of admiration, you can aspire to what you don't really need.

All feelings and emotions are highly contagious. Especially the state of happiness, joy, fulfillment.

When you see a contented person, you almost instantly begin to desire to experience a similar state and almost automatically rush to what this person has or does, falling into the illusion that this thing or events are the sources of his state.

Admiration (envy) is a subtle instrument.

If you look at the root, the people you usually admire have one thing in common – they are in a state of pleasure / happiness / joy. And you might get the impression that you want:

do what they do,

have what they have,

to be what they are,

live the way they live.

But in reality – you want to be happy, joyful and satisfied as they are happy, joyful and satisfied.

In fact, admiration (envy) is an instrument of life that leads you to a state of enjoying life.

The real reason for envy is the desire to experience a state of absolute contentment.

The subject of any envy (in its very depths) is a state.

You will never envy a person who is in sadness, despair, experiences anger, jealousy, mental pain, no matter what he owns or does.

The next time you feel jealous, remember that and ask yourself: what am I really jealous of right now? What am I really admiring right now? What do I really want now, want?

Check your desires for truth. This will help 3 signs.

Let's see what happens to those who are trapped and rushed after events, things, talents, attitude.

Girl example:

My two sisters are very wealthy, they have successfully married and played luxurious weddings on the ocean. I was terribly jealous of them.

We didn't have that kind of money, but I wanted the same wedding, because they looked very happy! We got into debt, my boyfriend worked several jobs, and we raised the required amount.

It was the worst day of my life! The efforts that we made did not justify those feelings, because we could not rejoice at all, knowing that we would be paying off our debts for several more years.

And the guy was tired, he didn't need this wedding at all – he just wanted to live happily ever after with me, and the wedding for him is a puppet show. It was all for my sake, but it did not bring me pleasure.

Another example:

I have a friend who loves to go out to restaurants. I like her, and everyone around her loves her very much, admires her.

I wanted to be admired and loved too, and went with her to restaurants for company. I was terribly bored, I was not “at ease”.

I'd rather go for a bike ride or play volleyball.

But I thought: “What will Oksana say? She would definitely choose a restaurant. She will be beautiful and will receive a lot of attention, and I will ride my bike alone. “

And I went to the restaurant. As a result, Oksana was happy, but I was not.

The two sisters of the first girl and the friend of the second girl – they followed their true desires and needs, and therefore pleasure awaited them as a result.

And our heroines followed false desires (not their own) and therefore, as a result, they were disappointed.

It is important to understand that you admire the state of joy, and to find those things that bring you this state! Then you will not be afraid of traps.

Identify negative thoughts

What thoughts do you have when you hear about someone's success? You may be saying to yourself, “This is not fair! Why do some people get everything, while others get nothing? “Or something like this:” I'm probably just a loser, because I can't achieve such results. ” But stop and think. How can someone's accomplishment make you a failure? Perhaps there is some good reason why this person has achieved such success?

There is no need to think that many things are unfair. We must look for the true reasons why we are failing in something in life. You need to look for the motivation for change, and not focus on negative thoughts and emotions. We must be realistic, take a sober view of the situation, and be honest with ourselves. And if you want to get rid of the feeling of envy, then you must focus on positive thoughts, and look for ways to solve problems. And not focus on your jealousy and the success of loved ones.

Stop comparing yourself to others

What is the point of constantly comparing yourself to other people? You get nothing out of it. Why not try to focus on getting your job done? Better focus your attention on what you have. And what can you do now to improve your existence. And if you are used to constantly comparing yourself with someone, and this somehow helps you, then it is better to compare with yourself. Try doing something better next time. Improve yourself and your skills. After all, even if a person has something more, this does not mean that he is truly happy.

Find the positives

Another good way to get rid of jealousy is good old school gratitude. After all, in any case, you have a house or apartment in which you live. It may not be yours, but someone doesn’t have that either. The realities of the modern world are such that many do not even have a roof over their heads. So be grateful for what you have. After all, each person is unique in their own way. Sit down and think about your strengths? Don't ignore even the smallest things. This exercise will make you realize that you are a truly unique person and that you have personality traits or qualities that others do not. Then ask yourself, “So why should I be angry when I have something to be grateful for?”

Turn envy into motivation

Turn your anger into an incentive to achieve your goals and plans. Tell yourself: “I don’t have a car or a house like this guy right now. But why don't I strive for this, start working harder, and realize my plans? ” On our website, we talk a lot about goal setting. They really help us achieve the results we want. And thanks to them, we simply do not have time for envy and negative thoughts.

Avoid acquaintances who value the wrong thing.

Stay away from people with wrong values. From those who only dream of a new gadget, who buy only branded clothes, and consider everything else useless. From men and women who do not know how to show respect, who have no morality, no etiquette and good manners. Otherwise, it will be difficult for you to get rid of the feeling of envy. Communicating with them, you only fill yourself with negative thoughts. You will become a materialist, and your envy will become even stronger. Beware of consumer culture and materialism. There is nothing wrong with getting better and enjoying all the benefits that we have. But this should not be to the detriment of your mental and mental state.

Let go of thoughts and relax

Doctors always advise to rest more in difficult situations. Relaxation means peace of mind. If you work hard, take a vacation and get some rest. You must understand that there will always be people who will be better and richer. Just like there are people who do not have what you have. So stop thinking about it and put your thoughts in a positive direction. Taking control of jealousy can help you achieve better results and become more successful. You can release the negativity that feeds resentment and anger. You will learn to appreciate what you have. And this is the key to happiness and how to get rid of jealousy.

But what if in the environment you achieve the success you dream of?

To envy? White or black envy?

Many people say that white envy is motivating.

Not. Envy doesn't motivate!

It is motivated by the fact that you see the success of another person, you can try it on yourself and then ask questions to yourself or better to him:

1 How did you (he / a) achieve this? (Attention here! When answering yourself, you can understand what kind of envy it is, proceeding from the previous paragraphs of the article)

2 Do I really want this? (here, trying on success is good. I really want a million-dollar blog and always be in sight? I like around-the-clock attention to myself? I really want to become a gold director in a company? To have a house on the ocean? I am ready and, is it mine, to commit 3 -5 working trips a month, with long flights and transfers?) Try on a dream, and then you will understand it all you need or are you really dreaming about something else? And then the question of motivation is removed. Yes, and extrinsic motivation doesn't last long. Then the man says that he quickly ignites and cools down quickly. That he is not correct.

After answering these questions, the subject of both envy and motivation disappears for many.

3 If everything goes well with the fitting, now ask yourself and this person – what should I do to get the same result?

4 Are you ready to plow in the same way for this result?

Why is envy so bad?

Once you've figured out how to get rid of jealousy, it’s worth discussing why it’s important to do it as soon as possible (and how it will affect your future life). It is not for nothing that envy is considered a vice. It has a number of negative effects on our entire life:

causes suffering, leads to depression;

may impair physical health;

does not allow to be happy for loved ones;

destroys good relationships with others;

interferes with learning from those who are more successful.

Each of these points is fairly obvious. Envy is a source of unnecessary worries, pain and suffering. Plunging into these unpleasant thoughts, a person may well get really sick. Sometimes even the successes of loved ones cause envy, and this can ruin the relationship.

The last item in the above list is also interesting. If the success of another person is envious, we cannot learn from their example, because we do not believe that they have achieved success on their own. But having got rid of negative feelings, you can analyze with interest his successes and understand how to achieve the same yourself.

Conclusion

Envy is one of the worst feelings a person can have. To many, it seems like a harmless emotion, but it inevitably destroys our lives. It worsens our mental and physical health, spoils relationships with loved ones, interferes with mutual understanding and even limits our own development. Therefore, as soon as you realize that you feel envy towards someone, immediately get rid of this feeling. Just memorize or write down the 10 exercises in this article and you can quickly deal with jealousy whenever you need it.

Sources used and useful links on the topic: https://psychologist.tips/1811-kak-izbavitsya-ot-zavisti-sovety-psihologa.html https://TayniyMir.com/samorazvitie/zbavitsya-ot-zavisti.html https: //zen.yandex.com/media/psixologiya/zavist-chto-eto-takoe-i-kak-borotsia-s-zavistiu-delius-svoim-opytom-5edacc63afcfa8293994e1a5 https://svetlanaduda.com/zavist-3-moshhnyx -sposoba-ochishheniya-ot-zavisti https://psiin.ru/obshhaya/zavist-kak-poborot-zavist https://KluchiMasterstva.ru/kak-spravitsya-s-zavistyu https://psikhologia.com/kak- izbavitsya-ot-chuvstva-zavisti.html https://dnevnik-znaniy.ru/samosovershenstvovanie/kak-izbavitsya-ot-zavisti-10-effektivnyx-texnik.html

Post source: lastici.ru

Envy is a very useful feeling.
