How to start to cultivate discipline in yourself?

What is self-discipline?

The ability to ignore momentary desires and weaknesses, continuing to do really important things and go towards the goal – this is self-discipline. This quality is of great importance, as our well-being and mood are constantly changing. We may not sleep well or get tired of work. And in rainy autumn weather, there is absolutely no desire for grandiose accomplishments – you want to sit quietly by the fireplace and drink cocoa.

A disciplined person constantly takes concrete steps aimed at solving important problems. He is engaged in work, education, self-improvement, arrangement of his personal life, gets rid of bad habits and develops useful ones. Self-discipline is the ability to be guided by common sense, and not by momentary desires.

Why is motivation not enough?

Today, the Internet and social networks are literally overflowing with information about motivation: books are written about it, videos are shot, online courses are being developed, and so on. People are inspired by examples of successful people (even though it is often just a picture), believe that they can do the same, are inspired even more and … Nothing happens.

Why? Let's see what motivation is – objectively and without emotion.

The term “motivation” was first used by the philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer, who derived “The Law of Motivation”:

“Our volitions precede our actions, and the influence of motive on an action is not cognized from the outside in an indirect way, like other reasons, but directly and from within, therefore motivation is causality, considered from within.”

The very word “motivation” is derived from the word “motive”. The Soviet psychologist and philosopher Alexei Leontiev called the motive “an objectified need.” In other words, motive is what prompts action and sets the direction of action; it is the ability to satisfy one's needs. What is the difference from purpose and need? Let's take an example. Let's say you are hungry – this is a need. You want to satisfy your hunger – that is your goal. The plate of soup that you dream of when you are hungry is your motive, your motivation for action.

Motivation can happen both from the outside and from the inside. It is easier and more understandable to explain with examples: you read Leo Tolstoy's books because you like them – internal motivation. You read Leo Tolstoy's books because they were asked to read at the university – external motivation. You go to the gym because you want to feel healthy – intrinsic motivation. You go to the gym because you want to please the opposite sex – external motivation. Most often, external motivators are money, approval and admiration of others, career growth, material acquisitions. Various factors are responsible for intrinsic motivation: the desire for growth and self-development, pleasure, and so on.

Motivation can be positive or negative. To take a look at the examples again, you promise yourself that when you finish your article, you'll go to a cafe for lunch — that’s a positive motivation. And if you promised not to go for walks until you finish your article, this is negative motivation. With someone, only negative motivation works, for someone it is important to praise themselves or receive praise from others. As in any other case, everything is individual.

Motivation is closely related to emotion. Recall your mood, energy, and desire to act immediately for success after reading an inspiring article or watching a motivational movie. In moments of euphoria, people, as expected, think only of the good, that their goal has already been fulfilled, and they can rest on their laurels – and at this moment they do not think at all about the intermediate path, which often consists of routine and not very interesting tasks. Moreover, it is impossible to always be in an “active mood”, there are days when you want to give up everything and give up your dream. And when motivation stops working, it's time for self-discipline.

How does self-discipline affect our lives?

This quality helps to correctly prioritize business, solving the most important tasks in the first place and methodically moving towards the goal. If you are determined to achieve success in all areas of life, then first of all it is necessary to develop self-discipline, because its presence is the main difference between a successful person and a failure. Such qualities as willpower, responsibility and self-respect are directly related to it.

Any person periodically has an untimely desire to relax, read anecdotes, browse the news, watch a video on YouTube or go for a walk. An ordinary loser in such situations indulges momentary desires and shirks work, and then torments himself with pangs of conscience. A disciplined person first completes an important task, and only then goes for a walk or allows himself to rest. Are you ready to do some good work on developing self-discipline? Then we start.

Disciplined and non-disciplined people

If you take a closer look at the team in which you work, you can distinguish some people who postpone things for later, referring to the lack of strength – willpower. They are called undisciplined subjects. They are not able to graduate from an educational institution, while they work, they always need to be “adjusted” – controlled.

Stephen R. Covey said very clearly about undisciplined people: “They are slaves – passions, desires and moods.” Perhaps an undisciplined person does not want to engage in his self-discipline due to procrastination (apathy, laziness) or is deprived of such an opportunity due to his mentality, their self-discipline is weak.

Disciplined people have iron self-discipline, they study with great perseverance, work, and achieve the goal of life. Or maybe they were born, immediately with such self-discipline, to stand “at the helm” and move progress.

Self-discipline is the acquired ability to perform a priority task at a specific time frame.

Discipline and strength love

So, we found out that motivation is closely related and even depends on the emotional state. Discipline and self-discipline, on the other hand, do not depend on emotions and allow you to act without reference to mood. Self-discipline is the ability to act according to a set plan without being tied to emotions.

Self-discipline is not an innate quality or natural talent. She lends itself to training, like muscles, that is, self-discipline can be pumped and strengthened through regular training and “diet” in the form of certain self-restraints. At first glance, self-discipline may sound boring and boring, but it is not. The constant satisfaction of momentary needs, such as junk food, thoughtless surfing the Internet, sleeping until lunchtime (everyone has their own habits), will not make life happy and of high quality, and the ability to control oneself and not deviate from the intended path will help to achieve goals and the desired standard of living. Moreover, disciplined people really enjoy the way they live: self-control allows them to achieve goals, and nothing motivates or inspires as much as their own success.

Self-discipline allows you to look at your life objectively, from the outside. Self-discipline helps to get rid of “garbage” in the form of bad habits or constant laziness: being a disciplined person, you can tell yourself that an evening on the couch watching the TV will be pleasant, but you dream of cubes on the press, so the gym will replace “seal rest”.

But don’t think that self-discipline will turn you into a robot on a strict schedule. First, you can and should give yourself indulgences. For example, if you decide to eat only healthy foods from now on, but are desperate for a slice of cake, allow yourself to eat a slice, for example, every Sunday. With pleasure and without remorse. This can also be a kind of reward for the fact that all week you have been eating only healthy food. And so in everything.

How a habit is formed

Agree how great it is to have healthy habits, like reading every day before bed or eating vegetables for dinner, and doing them without thinking. How is the habit of doing something formed?

Let's start with the most common myth about 21 days: supposedly you need to “endure” only 3 weeks, after which you will automatically heal the life you want. This statement was deduced by plastic surgeon Maxwell Maltz, who noticed that his patients took about 21 days to get used to a new appearance. In fact, this does not always work out.

Man is a rational being, so he tries to act and live in a way that will become the least resource-intensive and most enjoyable. The fear inherent in us by nature protects us from dangers and, in relation to modern life, from discomfort. This is why people quickly get used to junk food, lying on the couch and so on – after all, this is the fastest and easiest way to have fun.

The more complex a habit you want to get, the longer it will take you. You need to develop something like a reflex in yourself.

For example, you need to train yourself to run. Promise yourself to watch an episode of your favorite TV series after your run – it will be more motivated and you will strive to start jogging as soon as possible in order to receive the reward. You also need to create an atmosphere for yourself that encourages you to go out for a run: you can hang photos of athletes on the walls, join the runner communities on social networks. Your environment should constantly remind you of your new habit, and then the process will go much faster and easier.

But remember that you shouldn't force yourself to do anything with force. If you just can't bring yourself to go jogging and turn it into your daily routine, maybe you should consider another sport?

Let's continue to learn how to form habits. If your self-discipline has not yet been pumped to a level where you can easily control yourself, involve friends in this business. Share with someone around you that you are now running every morning, and ask a friend to ask you for support every day. A sense of responsibility and unwillingness to fall in the eyes of the environment will help with motivation for the habit. Ideally, of course, you should be such a friend for yourself, but everything has its time – we have just begun. There are also many apps that track your habit formation: Daily Habits, Habitica, iDoneThis, Productive, Coach.me.

A common mistake that many make is the desire to get “everything at once.” Let's continue with the jogging example. For example, you decide to start tomorrow and immediately run 10 kilometers. Before that, you did not run. Of course, your body is in shock, all muscles ache, and the thought of the next workout is terrifying. Always start small, then a new business will be easier and without frustration, and nothing motivates you like your own successes, even small ones. The same principle applies to scientific work. Agree that the phrase “write a thesis” is a little scary and does not allow you to start? And if you promise to write just one page a day, then things will go easier and, surprisingly, faster. But remember to write every day.

The main factor in forming a new habit is regularity. Skipping one day will throw you back to the start of the journey, especially if you started doing business relatively recently. What to do when the days come when you don't want anything at all? Give yourself some relief, but don't give up the habit altogether for this day. Can't bring yourself to go run? At least go for a walk. Do you want to watch TV instead of a book? Promise yourself that after reading 10 pages, turn on your favorite program.

Training discipline and willpower

The stronger your self-discipline, the easier it is to form new, healthy habits. So let's talk about self-discipline training.

At the beginning of this article, we compared self-discipline to muscle – regular training and “diet” will make your self-discipline stronger and stronger each time.

Start by adjusting your daily routine, namely your sleep routine. Train yourself to go to bed at the same time and wake up at the same time. From the first alarm clock! Chronic lack of sleep leads to rapid fatigue, stress, emotional burnout and even neurasthenia – what new good habits can be discussed here. You can also add a diet to your sleep routine: firstly, eating at the same time is good for the body, and secondly, it will teach you to plan and daily routine, you will always know when you have time.

Practice meditation. Meditation improves the ability to concentrate, helps you to fully immerse yourself in business. Decide on a time for meditation – you can set aside 15 minutes in the morning after waking up, to tune in for the day, or before bed, to get rid of unnecessary thoughts. You can start with breathing meditation, which is great for beginners. You can also “meditate on an object”: select an object in the place where you are, and concentrate on it, not noticing other things and not thinking about anything other than this subject. You can use technology to learn how to meditate. The Headspace app will teach you different types of meditation, the CALM and Insight Timer apps will create the right atmosphere, and Smiling Mind offers meditations for different ages and conditions.

Keep a progress diary – write down every day what you have done so far. Such a diary can be a form of self-control. It is even more convenient to use habit trackers: a kind of calendar in which you write down whether you spent time learning a new language or taking a walk before bed today.

Work with thinking. Try to drive thoughts of procrastination or relaxation away. As soon as you feel that laziness is approaching, switch your attention to something else. Do not negotiate with yourself, say that from now on this is your lifestyle. Also try to think ahead. For example, let's say you decide to lose weight and eat right, but you can't stop thinking about cakes and cookies. Play a possible scenario in your head: you eat a piece of cake and enjoy it for 2 minutes. But these 2 minutes will end, and most likely you will begin to scold yourself and reproach yourself for weakness, and this will also throw you further from the goal. Always ask yourself: is it worth it?

Work with self-esteem. Often, self-doubt and fear of failure prevent us from getting down to business or completing it. Have you ever had thoughts like “Why start, I still won't succeed” or “It's so difficult, I probably won't be able to do it”? You will not raise self-esteem in one day, but regular work on yourself will definitely be beneficial.

How to deal with the urge to quit and do nothing

What to do when no persuasion works and you can't get down to business? Chances are, you are tired, and if not physically, then emotionally. We are humans, not robots, and from time to time you can afford to be lazy or do something useless, but very enjoyable. This will allow you to take a break and recuperate, as well as really get bored with your favorite business. An amazing fact, but sometimes when you choose rest or “doing nothing” for yourself, from somewhere there is a great desire to start work or just boredom, which you want to replace with something useful.

If postponing things until later (or at the last moment) is your habit, most likely you are trapped in procrastination. Here we talked about how to deal with procrastination in order to finally get down to tasks on time.

When you don't want to return to your habit at all, or the volume of the upcoming tasks is very scary, try to “agree with yourself” that you will work on the task for 15 minutes, and that's it. Once you start, you may not notice yourself how you started to taste.

Here it is appropriate to return to motivation – after all, this is a useful skill. Today you can find a large amount of literature on inspiration, motivation and, most importantly, the development of discipline and willpower. For example, “Developing Willpower” by Walter Michel, “Self-Discipline. Personal Development by Michael Wilson, The Book of Challenges by Rosanna Kasper, Willpower by Roy Baumeister and John Tierney, The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg.

Discipline and willpower are qualities that are needed in any business, from getting up in the morning to writing scientific articles. Set yourself a goal that inspires you, believe in yourself and use our advice to always bring what you started to the end!

Steps to building self-discipline

Let's take a look at a few steps that will lead to self-control. And for a clearer picture, we will analyze the methods of self-discipline using the example of a person striving to lose weight.

Purpose and motivation

It is common for any person to have a goal that he wants to achieve. They can be both global (win worldwide recognition, become the best in what they do, etc.) and local (lose weight by summer, write a book, learn a foreign language, etc.). So it is with self-discipline: it is very difficult to educate it in yourself if you do not see what it is for and what the final result should be.

But any goal is accompanied by motivation. It is a process that motivates action. It is necessary to understand why a person needs self-control. Maybe he's looking for a promotion. Or he was tired of being late somewhere all the time. In any case, the goal and motive is the very first thing to decide on.

Example: the goal is to lose weight by the summer. Motivation – you want to fit into your favorite swimsuit, dress, etc .; to please someone; improve your well-being and improve your health.

Step-by-step planning

The following phrase is familiar: “I want to get everything at once, but I get nothing gradually.” In this case, it is worth paying attention to the word “gradually”. There is no need to expect to achieve anything quickly and easily. Discipline abhors fuss. It will be correct to paint your actions in stages and go towards the goal gradually. Even if your plan is designed for a week, a month, a year, 5 years, it doesn't matter. The main thing is to stick to every step. It should be noted that all step-by-step stages are real and not mythical. Do not be fooled: it is better to do a little longer, but with good quality, than stumbling over the impossibility of realizing your dreams and giving up everything.

Example: planning in our case is to exclude unhealthy foods from the diet, drink more water, run the Nth number of kilometers; weigh ourselves every Monday, etc. But every step must be real. You yourself understand that the plan in which from tomorrow you start eating only healthy food and run 5 km every day is doomed to failure in advance. The steps should be gradual. Then it will be easier to keep yourself under control.

Focusing on the result

Always keep in mind the end result you are striving for. He will spur you on in difficult moments, when you want to give up everything. Assess what your actions can lead to in the future, what they will give for your future. And at the same time, think about what you will not have if you do not start acting now. Play on this contrast with your consciousness. As a rule, this makes you cheer up and motivated.

Example: imagine yourself slim, fit, feel light movements.

Disadvantages and weaknesses

Each of us has shortcomings, which sometimes become an obstacle on the way to the goal. Some do not recognize them, deceiving themselves and those around them. Others, on the contrary, can exalt their negative sides to the rank of merits that have the right to exist. In this way, they admit their powerlessness and lack of discipline in the fight against them. For others, seeing their vices and weaknesses can cause self-doubt. In any case, all this does not contribute to motivation and striving for a goal.

The most correct position is to be honest with yourself and not be afraid of your vices. It is important to realize them, but not give up, but gradually get rid of them.

Example: in order to decide to lose weight, you must admit to yourself that you have it and it interferes with your life. Be honest with yourself.

The pursuit of excellence

Trying to become perfect, you can completely forget about the end result, trying to perfect the intermediate paths. You can get stuck on one thing, while spending your energy not on productivity, but on improving the quality level of a small accomplishment. Which is very detrimental to self-discipline. It must be remembered that it is rather difficult to achieve the ideal. And you can strive for perfection even after the end result is obtained.

Example: unable to give up sweets altogether? Don't torment yourself. Allow yourself a little, but make up for it with extra exercise or an extra 10 minutes of jogging.

Distractions

There will always be factors that distract from achieving the goal. Your task is to resist them, not to get upset on trifles and not to indulge momentary desires. They lure by being so close and attainable. To keep the temptation from going astray, it is best to make it difficult to access it or completely isolate it for a while. Try to ignore the moments that prevent you from fully concentrating on a more important matter.

Example: You have constant diet breakdowns. Then just don’t buy harmful products or put them away so that you don’t want to get them out again.

Prejudice and stereotypes

Willpower and discipline are determined by a person's personal beliefs. Stereotypical thinking sometimes limits development and interferes with self-control. To think differently we are hindered by all sorts of fears of inconsistency with the idea. It is necessary to learn how to eliminate them. Belief in yourself and your actions will contribute to the achievement of the result.

Example: in your family, everyone has a lot of weight and convinces that this is genetics, and you will not be able to lose weight. Drop this thought. Maybe none of your loved ones managed to gain weight because they didn't try? Or tried, but failure made them give up? In any case, act according to your plans and without regard to others.

Fear of mistakes

Quite often, a person is not ready to take the situation into his own hands and start moving towards the goal for fear of making a mistake. This factor forces many to stop halfway. But few people think that mistakes constantly accompany us on the road to our cherished dream and success. Failures happen to everyone. You cannot find a person who did not commit an oversight. But, as you know, they learn from mistakes. And the one who does nothing is not mistaken. Do not forget about this. And never regret your mistakes. Henceforth they will serve you as a good lesson.

Example: you are trying to actively engage in physical education, but the weight not only does not decrease, but even increases. You may be doing something wrong. Ask your trainer to come up with a more effective exercise plan.

You don't need to overpower yourself

Yes, I dare to issue such a statement. But here is simple mathematics: if a person has motivation, which constantly pushes to development, then the struggle against oneself no longer seems such a disgusting occupation.

Our whole question is to deeply understand our motives and find this very motivation. Why self-discipline at all? Why change something?

If you've just gotten to the boiling point and want to fix your joints all at once, that's great, but terribly short-lived. Probably you have already faced a situation when you seem to have changed your life, but after 3 days, satisfaction came, and the phrase “I'm great, I need to allow myself to relax” ruined all plans. After her, everything returned to normal, because the necessary habit did not have time to gain a foothold and was captured by the past comfort zone. Yes, you have changed, but how long did it last? Are you 100% satisfied with the result?

So it turns out that self-discipline is like a salute – he shot, was glad and threw it away. There is no power in it if there is no deep guiding motive nearby. So when we want to change something, we must first connect these two things at the same time and only then get to work.

Little things

Try starting small: stop biting your nails, stop clicking your fingers, and always throw the gum in the trash. By disciplining yourself in small things, you get used to working on yourself, you get used to giving all your best and getting things done.

This is especially noticeable in people who have achieved results in sports. They know how to control themselves, since their character has already been formed in training. When they have to make the last approach, run the last kilometer or score the last decisive goal, they go through hard internal struggle and in the end they win. In life, meeting with the same feeling, they are already prepared and, thanks to past victories, believe in themselves. (By the way, here's another motive to play sports)

Admit that you are really mowing. Well, you don't like living such a life, deep down in your soul your behavior is disgusting to you. Instant pleasure brings you only disappointment and dissatisfaction, with every indulgence you feel more and more weak. In a word – lousy at heart.

But! All is not yet lost. After accusations and self-flagellation, you need to move on to the positive side. Develop a strong belief that your life needs to change and that you yourself are the source of change. Only you can fix everything, only you will work and raise self-esteem from your knees.

Think about it, for example when washing dishes. Make an adult decision to change everything, because everything starts with him. When you take responsibility for yourself, there will be no room for excuses and the game will go full force.

Environment

Having the right environment is one of the most important foundations of self-discipline. Moreover, the environment is not only people, but also things. Remove anything that leads you astray: unsubscribe from “harmful” YouTube channels, throw away your cigarettes, give away your minibar. Only, as we have already found out, all this must be replaced somehow. For example, post reminders on the walls, subscribe to educational blogs, or start reading books.

Encouraging and cheering yourself up

The development of self-discipline requires the ability not only to keep oneself in strictness, but also to be able to reward oneself for success in new achievements and to cheer oneself up if one feels that one is giving up. You should not blame yourself for a weak will, pay attention to what you have already achieved in a short time. Let it be a small victory, but such an important one. After all, in order to get it, I had to work on myself and somehow restrain myself. Feel free to give the reward to yourself, take it as a rule. Thus, the motive for action will be stronger.

Example: well, you ate this ill-fated cake in a cafe with a girlfriend. Why don't you reward yourself with this for your efforts over the long term. Tomorrow you will return to your task and start working hard.

Self-discipline is an important factor in the psychology of a person striving for success. To learn to control yourself over momentary desires, you need to clearly and systematically work on yourself. And then success in your endeavors is guaranteed.

Deliberate Exception Management

The best way to manage vices is to accept and manage them. You can't just make them evaporate, but you can learn to control them and redirect their momentum by consciously including them in the plan. This is the judo method.
The point is to control the timing and dosage. Diet? Plan the days you cheat (once a week, for example). Spending valuable hours of your life on Facebook? “No more Facebook” is wrong, “Facebook for 20 minutes in the evening to find out what is happening with friends, and that's it” is right.
Remember that the brain resists major changes, even doubly if they get in the way of immediate gratification. Abruptly giving up psychological habits is one hundred percent way to create a circle of frustration, failure, and self-loathing.

This can be avoided by accepting and planning exceptions – no exceptions from planned exceptions.

You can absolutely afford to say, “Today I will stay at home, eat pizza in my underpants, and play video games.” But do it only occasionally, consciously and deliberately – you can't just happen to you in the absence of a more productive plan. Any plan is better than this.

Paradoxically, such carelessness is not even pleasant, it makes you feel guilty and useless. But you will enjoy it if it is a planned holiday. There must be days for pajamas, ice cream and dumb TV shows. But it is you who should let them into your life, and not they you into theirs.

How to develop discipline in everyday life

Remember, you have to work hard to develop discipline. But the main factor is always desire. As you want it, so be it.

“There is motivation – there will be discipline”

Daily Schedule

Get yourself a notebook or diary where you write down all the important things. Write them down in the following format: task – estimated time to complete – priority. If you can accurately determine how long it will take you to complete tasks, then this will help you calculate the number of tasks that you can actually do in a day. Priority needs to be determined in order to understand which task can be transferred to the next day in case of lack of time. For example, the shelf can be nailed down tomorrow, but today it is better to go to visit your grandmother.

When it comes to work responsibilities, consider not only the urgency of the assignment, but also the likelihood that you may need to redo or modify it.

Everything before your eyes

If you work at a computer, write current tasks on a sticky note and attach it to the monitor. Keeping a to-do list in front of your eyes, they will seem to you quite real and inevitable, and not some abstract and unimportant. You will want to quickly get rid of this feeling of inevitability, and work will go faster. Psychologists have proven that by hanging an instruction to action in front of your eyes, you will do it faster than if you keep it in your head.

Get your morning routine

So, let's start as expected – from the beginning of the day.

It would be great if you started getting up earlier than usual, about an hour. But that will still not be enough. After all, this time can be spent in different ways. This is the key that will help us develop self-discipline.

For example, you can spend an hour free to sleep on YouTube, or read a book. One harms our discipline, the other develops.

Reading is far from the only thing that morning routine can involve. Personally, I do the following in the morning:

I drink a glass of water

I wash my face

Doing exercises

I write down the plan and goals for the day.

Reading a book

Rules in the morning to help you wake up

The very word “routine” implies – to do every day. As a result, it will serve the development of discipline.

Lie down and wake up at the same time

Find the right time for yourself when it is more convenient for you to go to bed and when to wake up. Not only will you instill a healthy habit, but you will also do a service to your own body.

Act according to plan

If you are not yet practicing writing down plans and goals for the day, then you are missing out on a lot. Such a procedure will help to increase your efficiency several times. This procedure looks like this:

An example of recording plans and goals for the day

As you can see, the day is scheduled almost by the minute. Of course, if this doesn't suit you, you can simplify your task and write down only goals. But if you want to become more disciplined, then write down the day in full. Set aside a separate time for each task and do not forget about rest. At the end of the day, cross out the completed tasks and draw conclusions whether you acted according to the plan or violated it.

Concentration of attention

One of the main enemies of discipline is absent-mindedness. Now you are working on a project, but you have already entered social networks, because an audio notification has come from there. That's it, the concentration of attention has already been lost. Now, in order to return to the project, you need to make some effort on yourself, moreover, it is not always possible to quickly continue working from the same moment where you left off last time. Sometimes it can take a while to review the work already done and figure out what to do next. If at the very beginning you were not distracted by anything, you would not have wasted so much time.

You can train your concentration with a variety of exercises you find. Every time you are just distracted from the main task, mentally scold yourself and immediately return to work. An inner feeling of shame in front of oneself will also appear, of course, if a person has at least a little responsibility.

Finance control

Many people often buy unnecessary things because they want them here and now. We are all subject to impulse buying, but try to at least keep it to a minimum. Buy only what you really need. Learn to save some amount from each salary – when an unforeseen situation arises that requires an urgent injection of money, you will say “thank you” for it.

Write down all your expenses and income. Seeing these numbers on paper or on a tablet screen will make it easier for you to manage your money while developing financial discipline.

Eat right

If you can apply only one method, let it be – proper nutrition.

The main rules to follow:

Don't overeat. Eat about 5 times a day, but in small portions. 5 to discipline

Give up fast food, sweet and starchy foods. 5 to discipline

Eat more fruits, vegetables and nuts. +3 to discipline

Set a time for each meal. +2 to discipline

Count calories and stay within the range. The YAZIO app will help you with this. +3 to discipline

Drink 2 liters every day. +2 to discipline

Total +20 to discipline. Not bad, I think.

Give up something

First, you need to choose what to give up, at least for 3 weeks. It can be a favorite, but unhealthy dish, watching TV shows, movies, bad habits such as alcohol or smoking.

This practice is needed to feel in control. Like, you are the master of your own life and no emotions are able to control you.

Learn to say no

It's easy to succumb to friends' tempting suggestions to go to a bar instead of studying. Or, it's just as easy to grab a piece of cake when you're on a diet. Therefore, you need to learn to say “no” to some people and things. To make it hard.

There is one exercise for this method:

Make a list of 10 things you need to say no to. Then take them out of your life one at a time.

Conclusion

Self-discipline is the most important skill of a successful person, which cannot be replaced by talent or luck. Like other skills, you can develop self-discipline by purposefully working on yourself. Starting today to carry out all the recommendations given in this article, you will feel tangible changes in your character in 3 weeks.

Sources used and useful links on the topic: https://dnevnik-znaniy.ru/samosovershenstvovanie/kak-razvit-samodisciplinu-7-effektivnyx-texnik.html https://moluch.ru/information/kak-razvit-v-sebe -disciplinu-chtoby-vse-dovodit-do-konca / https://infomarketing.su/samorazvitie/kak-razvit-i-vyrabotat-samodisciplinu/ https://motivacii-net.ru/kak-razvit-samodisciplinu/ https: //uspeshnick.ru/kak-stat-distsiplinirovannym-chelovekom/ https://vc.ru/flood/7933-practical-discipline https://creator-arseny.site/lichnostnyj-rost/razvit-distsiplinu-v- sebe https://dengodel.com/psychology/kak-vospitat-v-sebe-disciplinu.html

Post source: lastici.ru

A few tips on how to cultivate discipline.
