How to get started with comics

It's not clear where to start

Let's simulate a situation: you watched a new movie about Spider-Man, wanted to know how it was in the original source and read a few comics. You go to the website of any chain store or come to a strange place called “comic shop”, looking for something about Spider-Man … and you fall into a stupor. A bunch of books, the connection between which you can not grasp: single stories in magazines, books marked “Volume 2” or “Volume 3”, while “Volume 1” cannot be found with the eyes.

You are trying to figure it out, but it’s not easy: you see several episodes that are running right now, dozens of single episodes, some collections, incomprehensible words everywhere: teamups, limits, one-shots, crossovers … What to do is absolutely incomprehensible. The first thought that usually comes at such moments: “Well, I'll just start reading from the very beginning and figure it out …”.

So – no, it is not worth doing that, at least from the very beginning. Why? Let me give you my sad experience. I'm a big fan of Batman, in 2011 I tried to read everything that came out about The Dark Knight since 1940. I stopped about eight issues later. Stopped because the comics were pretty weird. They wrote them in a completely different way than now. They also didn't give me what I wanted – after all, Batman has changed over the past decades almost beyond recognition. My example is not exhaustive, but still not the best way. Then what to do?

First, you can turn to the Internet and thematic communities. A simple query “Best Spider-Man Stories” is likely to solve all your problems at once: over the decades of existence of superheroes in the community, a certain list of “best” stories has formed. Moreover, with a high degree of probability, all in the same communities and comic book collections, their author will kindly indicate how easy it will be for a beginner to read this or that comic, or give some kind of historical reference to understand a more complex plot.

You don't have to be familiar with the 1942 Captain America comics to enjoy Brubaker's Winter Soldier. I was convinced myself that this was a good idea: I started getting to know Cap precisely through this comic. Of course, acquaintance with the full story of the character, all its ups and downs, ups and downs will only benefit – many things will become even clearer, while others will sparkle with completely new colors – but it is better to come to this after a certain baggage from ” best comics “.

Secondly, the publishers are also not stupid and regularly make “soft” and not very restarts, dropping the numbering of the series in order to attract newcomers and not scare them off with three-digit numbers. The main thing is to be prepared for the fact that in comics everything is usually different than on the big screens – a disproportionately larger number of characters and plots.

Knowledge of English will be a great bonus for you. With it, you can refer to the original comics. Of course, a lot has been published in Russian today, but most of it has not yet been translated. In addition, with translated editions, the situation is about the same as with dubbed films – a certain share of the charm of the original language and the author's style is inevitably lost during translation.

Where to start getting to know comics?

A selection of the best stories about the character. You don't have to look for the very beginning of the hero's story; start with a selection of the best stories about him.

Restarts of the original plots. With their help, you will discover new and interesting characters.

Perhaps everyone knows characters like Superman or Captain America. But in comics, there are dozens and hundreds of smaller characters that turn out to be no less interesting and deep. For example, the stories of the Moon Knight, the Animal, the Question, or the Ghost Rider are often very different from typical superhero stories, as they are unusual heroes themselves. And characters familiar from films like Hawkeye and Vision appear in a completely different light, which brings us to the second myth.

Comics are only about superheroes

Now, this is not the case. Of course, superheroes have dominated the comic book market for a very long time (why it was so – a separate conversation), but somewhere in the 80s, the number of genres and themes in comics began to increase almost exponentially.

Today you can find comics for almost every taste: from science fiction (“Saga”, “Trees”) to magic fantasy (“Elfquest”, “Mouse Guard”), from everyday stories (“Blankets”, “Local”) to noir crime dram (“100 bullets”). They will be as different from “classic” superhero stories as possible.

And in the superheroics itself, the stories of the struggle between good and evil are increasingly giving way to the personal stories of the heroes. The aforementioned Moon Knight suffers from a mental disorder and desperately clings to the remnants of his mind, Hawkeye is trying to mend his life, being “just a guy with a bow and arrow,” Vision, instead of with his new family, just wants to live peacefully in the suburbs of Washington, and the Doom Patrol is faced with such enemies and threats that no one has ever seen. How do you, for example, animal-vegetable-mineral man?

There are comics, and there are graphic novels

Some people think that comics are entertainment for children and infantiles, but graphic novels are serious, intellectually and for wealthy adults. Although in fact they are one and the same. The latter term is purely marketing, and many authors and publishers do not accept it: as if calling a comic a “graphic novel”, you are embarrassed that it is still a comic.

“Comics” and “graphic novels” are actually the same thing. It is a way of telling a story with an emphasis on visuality.

The only noticeable difference in these terms is that a “comic” is a periodical that comes out once a month / two months / two weeks, and a “graphic novel” is a comic that came out in the format of a large book and was a complete story. for example, “Mouse” or “Keepers”. But if we take a comic strip of 50 issues that has been out for 50 months and put them together in one or more books, it also becomes a “graphic novel.”

The graphic novel doesn’t guarantee a “serious and smart” story, and “comic” is not necessarily a set of pictures for stupid teenagers. There are comics in which there are no words at all, as in “Arrival” by Sean Ten: an amazingly beautiful and sad story about loneliness and emigration, where silence plunges into an atmosphere of isolation of the hero from his loved ones and the language.

All of these are comics, and trying to separate one from the other, in my opinion, is inappropriate. And while the “line” is drawn between “comics” and “graphic novels”, the first in the mass consciousness will be perceived as nonsense. Just read the comics and don't add to this confusion. However, one should not forget about the differences in comic book traditions in different countries.

Varieties of drawn stories

All comics are divided into three large groups:

American magazine format (conditional comics about Iron Man;

Japanese manga;

European Bande Dessinée or BD.

Each developed independently of the others, so each has its own characteristics.

grew out of newspaper strips – short comics that were printed in the columns of daily and Sunday newspapers. This format developed during World War II, when science fiction and patriotic propaganda were popular. All this created an interest in superheroes.

it was originally called Franco-Belgian comics. Their development was also influenced by the Second World War: during the occupation of France and Belgium by the Nazis, American comics were no longer imported, so local artists began to develop. They are now available in 40-60 page hardcover albums. The choice of themes is varied, from the historical realistic novel Eagles of Rome to the complex brainwashing science fiction The Metabarons.

Manga has been influenced by American comics and animation, and again by World War II. But it is also deeply rooted in Japanese traditional visual arts. Plot and stylistically, it is very different from both American and European comics. Manga is published in paperback in small volumes. In it, the drawing often prevails over the text and there are special graphic elements that are characteristic only of it: the shape of the eyes, which determines the character, the famous “drops” and so on.

The comic has its own language

Comics is a special kind of art at the intersection of painting, graphics and literature.

From all his ancestors, he absorbed the brightest and most useful tools. Visual images allow the reader to immerse the reader in the narrative, introduce him to the world in which the heroes of the comics exist, and through the details allow the author to tell more about the characters without overloading the reader with too extensive descriptions.

In addition to the “standard” techniques for visual art, comics have developed their own unique ways of interacting with the image. Some of them are of a symbolic nature. Most have long been accustomed to the fact that sharp lines accompanying a character in the frame (speedlines) indicate fast, sweeping movement. In addition, artists use a range of different strokes to convey the emotions and mood of the characters. The heroes' shoulders drop under the weight of the flourishes hanging over them, and their internal contradictions seem to seep into the real world, fading in the form of uneven squiggles.

Several special touches can be seen in this comic: speedlines to emphasize the character's movement, short lines to indicate the strength of a character's emotion, and circular lines with stars around the heads of stunned characters.

Here are the characters chained with horror. Their small tremors are transmitted by frequent vertical lines. “In Search of the Divine Recipe” artist Saeki Xiong

The interaction of text and image is a powerful source of creativity. A drawing can illustrate text, support it, or even contradict it. But each time they meet, they generate something new in the mind of the reader.

“This is not a pipe,” says Rene Magritte. And he's right

This is something better – a tube image

Comic text is not just a literary base, but also a visualization tool. Depending on what and how the character speaks, the design of his speech varies greatly.

We cannot directly hear the sounds of what is happening on this page, but the design of the text helps us to present it as in reality.

Typography in comics doesn't end with choosing typefaces and packing characters' lines into bubbles. In the hands of the artist, the word turns into a symbol, enhancing its meaning.

To show a truly manic laugh, you can completely fill the frame with it. “Batman: The Killing Joke”. Artist Brian Bolland

Another comic book weapon is frame frames. Due to their size and shape, the comics artist can, for example, control time.

Longer frames are perceived by the reader as longer in time

Or use them to enhance the intensity and dynamism of the action.

Here it seems that the character has broken the page with one blow. This not only creates a more dynamic composition, but also reflects the panic of the protagonist, his “brokenness”. “Marvel Knights: Spider-Man. Battle Night “artist Marco Rudi

Over its long life, the comic book format has acquired the widest range of expressive means, but at the same time it has remained quite flexible to new trends. Conservatism is not peculiar to comics, few people will have a desire to say “you can't draw like that”. He is gladly ready to absorb both ethnic traits and avant-garde techniques. This liberality attracts many experimental artists.

Inspiration for the script and visual design of this comic comes in large part from the culture of India. Fragment from the comic strip “Jaycarn. Seven sons “by Anastasia Kim.

Modern comics artists can use techniques and other media – for example, in the webcomic “Homestuck” many pages are made in gif-animation format. Inside you can also find short animated videos and even fragments that you can play.

The road to the reader

Any idea embodied through art is faced with two extremely unpleasant realities: technology and money. Even a short film requires the effort of a team of people (even if that team is a very sympathetic friend of the director) as well as technique. When hiring a third-party sponsor, you can be trapped in a person giving money for production begins to put pressure on the art part in order to reduce their risks and increase the chances of profit. Compared to film and animation, the comic strikes a perfect balance between simplicity of embodiment and richness of the palette of expressive means.

Today, comics are easier than ever to reach their readers. It is not even necessary to be published in physical form. Webcomics have long been the norm, with many different platforms emerging that allow authors not only to share their creations, but also to monetize their work. Some sites provide access to comics for a paid subscription, while others simply give an opportunity to thank the author.

Comic in the eye of the beholder

The combination of all these features makes comics the ideal format for creative expression. Aside from the idea that comics are children's or frivolous literature, you might be surprised to find many artists who use this format for really difficult and difficult conversations with their audience. For very important conversations.

Many people know the name of Art Spiegelman, the author of the comic strip “Mouse. The story of a survivor “. This comic was first published in 1980 and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1992. It tells the story of Wladek, a Polish Jewish Holocaust survivor.

This is a black and white comic with a rather avant-garde pictorial solution. All characters are depicted in the form of various animals: Jews in the form of mice, Germans in the form of cats. The heroes of the novel are emphatically impersonal – they have no individual traits. The artist emphasizes that both the tragedy and the cruelty of the events of the Second World War occurred not with any specific people, but with people in general.

However, it is also a deeply personal story. The first volume of the novel is a transcription of Art's conversations with his father. This is a story about his life before the war, about how he met his wife, how they rejoiced at the birth of their first son. And how everything changed afterwards.

The second volume becomes the author's comprehension of these events, his relationship with his father, who was never able to fully recover from the trauma, the feeling of guilt that Arth himself got a calm life much easier.

Another comic strip about the fate of those who happened to live in a “historical moment” is “Persepolis” by Marjan Satrapi. The plot of the comic is based on the memories of the main character – the Iranian girl Marzhi. The tragic history of Iran – the Shah's regime, the Islamic revolution, the war with Iraq – is shown through the eyes of a teenage girl.

Marji shares her first childhood experiences about religion, death, injustice.

In the way Marzhan draws, you can see the reflection of her worldview. It mixes the traditions of the European school of comics and traditional Iranian art.

Among those who use comics as a form of storytelling, there are also Russian authors.

The author of the “Survilo” comic strip Olga Lavrentieva tells the story of the life of her grandmother Valentina Vikentievna Survilo, who went through the terrible years of repression and the siege of Leningrad. The story of one Leningrad woman becomes a reflection of the fate of millions of people.

The basis for the comic was stories, memories of a direct eyewitness of the events. The pictorial solution tries to emphasize their fuzziness, fragmentary character, the attitude of the narrator. “Survilo” is a completely black-and-white book, painted with ink, different brushes, there are a lot of halftones, shades of gray.

Tool for the master

Despite its reputation as fiction and children's literature, the comic has proven time and again that it can help convey important and serious topics to its audience. And if you have long wanted to talk about something that keeps you awake at night and makes you ask yourself difficult questions over and over again, try making a comic. And someone will definitely understand you.

12 comics for those who don't read comics

Every year serial comics and individual graphic novels are becoming more and more part of the culture. In cinemas, films from Marvel and DC are collecting the most solid box office, and TV screens are flooded with series about “heroes in raincoats.”

Although, despite the stories of fans, many still believe that books in pictures can be of interest only to children. But there are quite a few serious adult stories that will make you look differently at the comic book industry.

1 Keepers

Watchmen

The graphic masterpiece of the famous author Alan Moore deservedly got into the list of the 100 best novels of the 20th century according to the Time magazine. At first glance, this is a typical story about heroes in strange costumes. But in fact, “Guardians” can be opposed to ordinary comics.

Here, the life of superheroes is similar to that of a human: a character similar to Batman has problems with erection, a villain saves the world, and a principled avenger can destroy it.

2 V for vendetta

V – for Vendetta

<img decoding="async" class="SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp" src="https://inform.com.de/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/post-214420-607c27ff010ae.jpg" alt="New knowledge where to start acquaintance with comics. Great Britain is dominated by a fascist government, everyone is trying not to stand out from the crowd. But the mad anarchist V challenges the system.

In this graphic novel, it is not the main character that is important, but the world itself, in which the action takes place. In the mid-80s, Moore wanted to describe a dystopian future, but in fact he predicted a lot of what has become our reality.

3 Mouse: a survivor's tale

Maus: A Survivor’s Tale

<img decoding="async" class="SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp" src="https://inform.com.de/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/post-214420-607c27ffe950b.jpg" alt="New knowledge where to start acquaintance with comics. Its author Art Spiegelman tried to tell the story of his father, a Jewish survivor of the camps during the Holocaust. To slightly simplify the visual presentation, he portrayed all the Jews as mice, and the Nazis as cats.

But one should not think that this makes the work comical. Eerie sensations from him are no less than from serious articles on this topic. Moreover, at the end of the book, Spiegelman shows a real portrait of his father, forcing the reader to remember that all this time it was about real people.

4 Persepolis

Persepolis

<img decoding="async" class="SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp" src="https://inform.com.de/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/post-214420-607c2800c3950.jpg" alt="New knowledge where to start acquaintance with comics. And they will not just show, but also give 100 bullets that cannot be tracked. He investigates murders, robberies and disappearances. Every time he has to face the world of money, temptations and lies. However, if the plot is drawn out in the film adaptation, then the original is dynamic from the first to the last 66th issue. The priest Jesse Caster is possessed by a divine essence, and he gains power over the word – the ability to control people with his voice. However, things are not so simple. Angels are sent from heaven to return the essence, and along with them, the immortal patron saint of murderers. Although even this can be dealt with, there is still a more serious problem: God himself escaped from paradise.

Ennis managed to mix literally everything in this series: the apocalypse, worldwide conspiracies, saving the world, fights, family relationships, black humor, vampires, voodoo. And if you are not afraid of rudeness and frankness, then it is very easy to read it, even if you do not like comics.

11 Spy

Alias

<img decoding="async" class="SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp" src="https://inform.com.de/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/post-214420-607c28073d6d3.jpg" alt="New knowledge where to start acquaintance with comics. And most of all, she wants to forget about her past and live a normal life.

This is primarily an emotional work about a woman who has suffered from violence. And although she is part of the superhero Marvel universe, “Spy” can be read without even knowing anything about all the other heroes. These are completely independent stories, combining a noir detective story and a psychological thriller.

12 I kill giants

I kill giants

<img decoding="async" class="SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp" src="https://inform.com.de/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/post-214420-607c280818bd3.jpg" alt="New knowledge where to start acquaintance with comics. But be that as it may, she knew that she was doing something important.

Drawn in the form of black and white sketches, the comic is sometimes mistakenly attributed to the fantasy genre. But in fact, this story is about the life of a simple, frightened child in a complex world of adults.

Where to start reading comics?

This list has only one purpose. Turn one of your friends (if you don't know which ones to convince that comics are not for children) into the most ardent comic book fan

Of course, choosing the perfect comic strip for a friend, family member, or handsome postman can be tricky. But here are 10 books that can turn them into lifelong fans. Almost all of them have already appeared in printed form and are waiting for you on the shelves of comic shops.

01 (Хоукай) Hawkeye

<img decoding="async" class="SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp" src="https://inform.com.de/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/post-214420-607c2809029fa.jpg" alt="New knowledge where to start acquaintance with comics. Channel these subclips to fuel your righteous cause, knowing that a masterpiece by Matt Fraction and David Ahea is worth a moment of doubt.

Hawkeye is so good, and so stylistically unique, that he makes not one, but two Hawkai cool, reminds everyone why dogs are the best. Oh, and it has helped inspire almost every quirky and interesting superhero comic from 2012 to the present. This is quite an outdated comic, but it will pleasantly surprise any newcomer to the comic world.

02 Rat Queens

<img decoding="async" class="SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp" src="https://inform.com.de/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/post-214420-607c2809e5bdc.jpg" alt="New knowledge where to start acquaintance with comics. The Rat Queens do the impossible by taking Tolkien's standard fantasy world and making it completely fresh with a gang of girls who beat first and then only talk.

03 Miss Marvel (Ms. Marvel)

<img decoding="async" class="SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp" src="https://inform.com.de/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/post-214420-607c280af0755.jpg" alt="New knowledge where to start acquaintance with comics. Those first 100 episodes or so had nearly perfect storytelling. So if nostalgia and appreciation for times gone by is right for your friend, he'll love this Spider-Man.

For everyone else, there is Ms. Marvel. Kamala Khan revives the high school problems and sheer heroism that made Peter Parker such a beloved character in the 1960s. Pair that adorable teenage morality with one of the most varied books on the Big Two's list, and it's not hard to see why Kamala has skyrocketed from beloved solo star to avenger in record time.

04 Gotham Academy

<img decoding="async" class="SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp" src="https://inform.com.de/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/post-214420-607c280bdeaf6.jpg" alt="New knowledge where to start acquaintance with comics. However, handing over to someone to read a comic about Walkers is too obvious, plus if he (your friend who knows nothing about comics) watches the series, he will know what will happen and no intrigue.

Therefore, we recommend Invincible, which offers a universe of superheroes outside of the realm of Marvel and DC so actively storming our theaters and TV screens. Invincible takes the Spider-Man and Superman templates, mixes them together without regard to bodily harm, and comes out with the most inventive and consistent superhero comic book today.

“Baby Nemo”

Winsor McKay is the first person to experiment with comics. Not only was he one of the pioneers of the format (“Little Nemo” was created at the beginning of the 20th century), he also studied comics as a phenomenon in detail. The book features newspaper pages on which McKay experimented with portraying worlds and fantasies.

“Scott Pilgrim”

A comic book series about the life of 23-year-old Canadian Scott Pilgrim, who must defeat seven of his ex-girlfriend. Perhaps the main teenage comics of the 2000s, which works very well and gives a lot of references to modern pop culture.

“Hellboy”

A story about a demon – a researcher of the paranormal. In a way, a mix of myths and fairy tales under a superhero shell with stories from the Bible, poems by Edgar Allan Poe and rumors about the Nazi space program.

“Sandman”

Recognized as a cult comic strip by Neil Gaiman about the lord of dreams, published since the late 80s. Along with The Guardians and The Dark Knight Returns, he contributed to the comic books being considered serious literature.

Persepolis

An important independent comic strip in the autobiographical genre right now. A story about an Iranian girl who grew up during the Islamic Revolution and the war with Iraq. She tells what it's like to grow up amid the transformation of society into an increasingly closed one.

06 Чжуй (Chew)

a) Gourmet

b) Looks “I am a zombie”

c) Considers Roosters the greatest fighting animals

If even a couple of options fit your Geek Padawan's description, then chances are your comic rookie will love Chew, a world in which ALL SUPERPOWER IS FOOD-BASED ON FOOD, including Detective Tony Chu's ability to get his entire memory from the food he ate. (both from vegetables and from … a person)

At first glance, Chew feels like a book with a short lifespan, but John Lyman and Rob Guillory have built an incredibly fun, plot-twisted, inhabited Zhui universe. How to get started with comics" >

The most common comic on any list is “comics for people who don't understand comics,” and for good reason. The saga is a romantic comedy, space opera by Brian K. Won (Y: The Last Man, The Private Eye) and Fiona Staples. There are a million and one comics, TV shows and movies about space, but the Saga somehow manages to feel completely fresh, infusing modern sarcasm and innovative systems design into a well-worn genre.

Perhaps most importantly, The Saga makes it easy for new readers to forget that this is “just” a comic. Yes, there is a Planet of Sex, but this book is also about love, how to become parents, about war, and much more.

09 Sex Criminals

<img decoding="async" class="SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp" src="https://inform.com.de/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/post-214420-607c280fbc244.jpg" alt="New knowledge where to start acquaintance with comics. And if they don't like that kind of thing … what ?! Then run away from them
Sex Criminals is a great book with many funny sexual jokes and at the same time full of kindness. It may seem that this comic was created as just a magazine with porno jokes, but it is not. Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky create one of the most interesting romantic relationships and characters in comics

10 Witches (Let it be called so in this list, but in the original Wytches)

<img decoding="async" class="SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp" src="https://inform.com.de/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/post-214420-607c2810ab1c8.jpg" alt="New knowledge where to start acquaintance with comics. They captivate with bright design, non-trivial plots, clever background.

Major Thunder, A. Gabrelyanov

The first episode of The Plague Doctor just made me squeak with delight, because Igor Grom is the embodiment of both Sherlock Holmes, the same one performed by Cumberbatch, and Meglin. The Doctor is Moriarty, the antagonist of Major Thunder, who will appear more than once in the next episodes. However, there are other interesting storylines, where a Russian Sherlock with such a memorable pointed chin investigates the kidnapping of his young lady in Ireland and finds himself at the center of an international scandal.

Allies, N. Devova

It differs from the previous one in cruelty and not entirely pleasant scenes. From the first pages there is a set, in the middle of the peak of the culmination, and after … after the events develop in a measured manner. This is not the story that I read avidly and put on the shelf. Many episodes, long storyline with branches.
The art is also worth mentioning. In many scenes, she's just gorgeous. The nature and landscape around is incredibly beautiful! I advise you to get acquainted.

Adapted stories in graphic novel format. Many of them have already been filmed.

American Gods, N. Gaiman

The graphic novel is an illustration of a book by Neil Gaiman, which I learned about literally finishing the comic. The first part of “The Shadow” is nothing more than the plot of the entire work. We are smoothly, not always very successfully immersed in history, periodically knocking us off the main idea of the narrative. The illustrators should be given their due: quality work has been done, some pictures and dialogues are a work of art. On the downside, I can refer to glossy paper, which glares from the lamp when you read in the evening. Well, and the fact that after finishing the book, having tasted the core, you want to understand what the salt is.
The plot is simple enough: the prisoner is released from prison, but his life will never be the same. Around him there is a parallel world of gods worshiped by people. They can have different names, faces and even the time of life … before there were the gods of thunder, death – now the goddesses of television and advertising. And here something inexplicable happens: two worlds touch and tightly intertwine … perhaps it's all about the coins … a war is brewing ahead …

Sabrina: Eerie Adventures

Surprisingly, it has few similarities with the series. Interesting experience, slightly intimidating illustrations, but the atmosphere and decoration are on par. Is there a continuation? I can't wait to find out how this action will end.

Anya from Green Gables

Popular book in the West. She is often referenced in HBO and Netflix series. A story about a girl who was adopted by mistake by a family of farmers. Her easy temper and her penchant for adventures are the reasons she gets into trouble. A touching and instructive story about Anya who grew up in Green Gables. A comic was finally released in Russian, and not just translated stories.

Complete comic stories that don't have a sequel.

That Summer, J. Tamaki

A beautifully designed graphic novel about “that very summer”, when adult problems consume carefree childhood. Reading, I myself began to remember how I spent the summer at the dacha, what we did in the summer with friends, how at the end of August we were preparing for the start of the school day. Probably, the book is more of a reminder of what our summer was like once, how we spied on our elders, how we argued with our parents and wanted to appear adults. A leisurely story about summer, where there is no place for a thriller or a detective. Just someone's life. Partly ours.

Beasts from the mortal hill, E. Dorkin

The story is told from the perspective of animals. Starring 5 dogs and a ginger cat. A kind of “ghost hunter” and fighters against evil spirits. At first glance, the plot is quite childish, but some chapters are frightening with their drama and gloom. In some places it's hard for anyone to read, because you start to empathize with the main characters.
The work itself is nothing more than a small collection of stories about the “wise dogs”. Nice color pictures, but a lot of blood.
It definitely teaches you to love your pets even more!

Blacksad, H. Canales

Noir detective starring with a charismatic police cat. Insanely beautiful illustrations and design. At the moment, 3 volumes of Blacksad have been published in Russian. Each contains several stories that develop evenly over time.

Sources used and useful links on the topic: https://blog.vsemayki.ru/spokoynye/kak-nachat-razbiratsya-v-komiksah/ https://dtf.ru/read/188817-kak-ustroeny-komiksy https: / /Lifehacker.ru/12-komiksov/ https://zen.yandex.ru/media/id/5b71352801d26900aaf7d711/s-chego-nachat-chitat-komiksy-5b71e6566eb4dc00ae342963 https://www.the-village.ru/village/ weekend / the-village-university / 223795-comics-guide https://zen.yandex.ru/media/id/594146178e557dba322a220f/top-luchshih-graficheskih-romanov-chast-1-5edfbdb60736200a6e282114

Post source: lastici.ru

This list has only one purpose.
