Therefore, in our article we will try to figure out what this pest looks like, how to determine that it has settled in your garden and talk about folk methods of dealing with onion fly.

Appearance:

onion fly. adult

The onion fly practically does not differ visually from the domestic fly, but much smaller in size: the ash-gray body with a greenish tint on the back reaches no more than 5–6 mm in length. The pest appears in the spring, when dandelions and fruit trees begin to bloom.

onion fly larva

The onion fly chooses the dried scales of the bulbs as a place for laying, but if they cannot be found, it can lay eggs directly in the soil. The larvae are shown in just a couple of days – these are small white worms that infect almost the entire bulb. In 2 weeks, they completely destroy the plant, pupate, and by the middle of summer a young change of onion fly is ready to destroy the crop!

Signs of defeat:

Onions affected by an onion fly differ from healthy ones by the appearance of yellowness on the tips of the feathers and their drying. This is especially noticeable on young green leaves, they turn yellow and wither.

onion fly. affected bow

The onion turns into soft, dried. This is an outward sign. And a deep, internal sign of defeat is rotting of the bulb.

The insect can damage the planting of not only ordinary onions. It consumes spinach, shallots and garlic. Suffering from pests and leeks.

Folk methods of struggle:

Correct location of onion plantings.

The main method of dealing with onion fly at the stage of spring preparation of a summer cottage for sowing is to arrange beds with onions next to carrot beds.

An amazing mystery of nature: the onion fly does not tolerate the smell of carrots, and the carrot fly does not settle next to onions. These plants protect each other.

Experienced summer residents do this: they alternate two crops in one area – the first bed follows the second bed. In this case, the likelihood of the appearance of pests is minimal. Also, the onion fly does not like the smell of tomatoes, wild rosemary and lovage.

One of the most effective in the fight against onion flies is considered to be the method of cultivating the ground with tobacco dust (it is sold in specialized stores for gardeners). It can be used “neat” or mixed 1-to-1 with mothballs or sand. The areas between the beds are treated with tobacco dust, with minimal shedding of the “planting zones”.

The beds themselves, on which onions or garlic grow, are watered with saline – 250-300 grams of coarse salt are dissolved in 10 liters of water and the planting is watered. After 2-3 hours, the beds are watered with clean running water. This procedure must be repeated every 10 days.

Dissolve a bar of soap in 10 liters of water and spray the plants with the resulting solution. In addition, potassium permanganate is again in a hurry to help! Make a rich pink solution and water in the late evening to avoid burning the plants. Repeat the procedure as needed every 8-9 days.

Ash as a fertilizer is a very effective folk remedy in the fight against onion fly and its larvae – just sprinkle the aisles with ash. By the way, our grandmothers also used ash, they successfully brewed it. Take part of the ash and pour three parts of boiling water, let it brew for a day under the lid, and then pour.

Some farmers mix naphthalene with sand or ash in a ratio of 1:10 and sprinkle on the plantings. One or two procedures are carried out during the summer of the onion fly and the laying of eggs.

Potassium permanganate solution (“potassium permanganate”).

Another method of dealing with onion flies is watering with a saturated solution of potassium permanganate. This remedy is also used once every ten days.

Dilute in the proportion of 3 tbsp. l. 10 liters of water and water the soil under the plantings. Repeat the procedure three times, at intervals of 7-8 days. Nitrogen, which is part of the alcohol, acts in this case as a fertilizer for onions.

Dandelion root tincture.

Among folk remedies, tincture of dandelion rhizomes is quite popular among summer residents. Put 200 g of roots in a container and pour boiling water over it. Let it brew for a week. Water the garden bed once every 2 weeks.

Attention! The soil becomes salted, and other crops subsequently grow poorly on it.

Mixture 1 tsp. tobacco dust, 200 g of ash and 1 tsp. ground pepper (red or black). It is sprinkled along the rows and the soil is loosened to a depth of 3 cm. Two treatments must be carried out during the season: before the appearance of the 1st and 2nd generations of pests. The recommended dose is 1.5 kg of mixture per 10 m².

Post source: lastici.ru

At the beginning of summer, many gardeners are worried about the question: “Where does the onion fly come from?” This almost imperceptible pest is able to leave completely without onion harvest.
