In addition, the company independently produces peripherals and accessories for its own electronics: for example, access points, mice, keyboards, headphones, and even monitors. Also, Apple is the manufacturer of software for its devices, releasing both operating systems and programs for these operating systems.

When and by whom was Apple founded?

Apple as a legal entity was formed on April 1, 1976. The founders of the company are Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ron Wayne. However, Wayne left the founders after 12 days, so two Steves are usually called the creators of Apple.

Steve Wozniak (left) and Steve Jobs (right) at the dawn of Apple history

Who were the founders of Apple?

By the time the idea of creating their own company appeared, both Steves had decent work experience in large IT companies. Wozniak worked for Hewlett-Packard, and Jobs for Atari. If Steve Wozniak was, first of all, a brilliant engineer who was well versed in the technical aspects of creating computers, then Steve Jobs already in the distant 1970s was distinguished by marketing intuition: he knew what would be interesting to people and how to present them with a product so that they realized that they could not live without him. It was the combination of the talents of Jobs and Wozniak that ensured Apple's success.

Why was the name Apple chosen for the company?

First, Steve Jobs wanted to come up with an original, non-trivial name for the company. Secondly, Wozniak and Wayne could not come up with any other options. Third, the word Apple was chosen because it would have ranked higher in telephone directories than the firm's nemesis Atari. Fourthly, the apple is associated with Isaac Newton and his traumatic brain injury, which gave rise to great scientific discoveries. By the way, this is also hinted at by the first Apple logo.

How did Apple logos evolve?

For more than thirty years of history, the company has gone through only three rebranding. The first company logo was designed by Ron Wayne. It depicted Isaac Newton, and the logo itself looked more like a medieval coat of arms:

<img decoding="async" class="SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp" src="https://inform.com.de/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/post-227769-607cc4a9a17a5.jpg" alt="The history of Apple from the beginning to the present day. Why – no one said, but there are rumors that Apple is tired of comparing their logo to the rainbow flag that the sex minority has adopted. Most interestingly, both Apple and gay men have been using the rainbow since roughly the same time, in the late 1970s.

The gray apple is much better suited to the concept of modern design of Apple products – the severity of colors, nothing superfluous + unique style.

<img decoding="async" class="SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp" src="https://inform.com.de/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/post-227769-607cc4ab5fb29.jpg" alt="The history of Apple from the beginning to the present day. It was the first personal computer to open up a new area of application for the PC. Before Apple I, the computer was considered a purely engineering machine, which was mainly used in scientific research. In those years, no one could have imagined that soon a computer would be installed in almost every home.

Apple I computers sold for $ 666 and 66 cents. In total, about 200 of these machines were produced. By the way, in 2010, one such computer was sold at Christie's for £ 133,250.

What was Apple's first commercial success?

The Apple I computers, although revolutionary in nature, were released for a short time – only a year. In 1977, the Apple I was replaced by its modified model, called the Apple II. This computer was already produced on a serial scale. Steve Jobs rethought the design of the Apple II, making it suitable for both the home and the office. Apple II in 1977 acquired color graphics on the display and 48 kilobytes of RAM (at that time it was well, a lot<img decoding="async" src="https://inform.com.de/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/post-227769-607cc4ad14a43.png" alt="The history of Apple from the beginning to the present day. Millions of these machines have been sold.

What does the apple have to do with it?

It seems that even now no one fully understands why the company was named Apple. Hardly anyone associates computers with an apple. The history of the appearance of such an unusual brand symbol has become overgrown with myths and legends. Because in the summer of 1975, Steve Jobs worked on an apple farm? Or is it his love for the Beatles (their recording studio was called Apple Records)? Or he just liked Macintosh apples.

How the history of the logo began

Few people know, but in 1976 Apple had a different logo. It depicted Newton resting under an apple tree. Such a brand name did not look stylish at all and was not suitable for use in small sizes. If you look at the instructions for Apple I (the very first computer of the company), then you can see this very complex logo.

So why does Apple have a bitten apple – their logo? The answer to the question goes back to 1976, when the brand was first born. Anyone with the slightest interest in modern technology knows that Apple was founded by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. In fact, the company had three, not two, as is commonly believed, founders – Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and the lesser-known Ron Wayne. The latter gave up his stake in the company less than two weeks after its creation. Now Ron admits that even then he saw a successful future for the young company, but he does not regret his choice. And if he had the opportunity to change his mind, he would have done the same.

The reason for refusing a 10% stake in a promising company lies in Ron's negative past experience and his unwillingness to take risks. At the very beginning of the journey, Apple received an order for 50 computers. In order to collect them, it was required to borrow $ 15,000. Wayne had heard that the ordering company was notorious for having difficulty paying suppliers. Being already elderly (43 years old), Ron did not want to risk getting involved in deals with the possibility of losing all his property. Unlike both Steves, he had his own house and car.

It was Ron Wayne who, at the beginning of the founding of the company, drew the first trademark – the image of the genius Isaac Newton reading a book under an apple tree.

The emergence of the famous logo

The logo appeared shortly before the release of the Apple II. The history of its origin began in April 1977. Steve Jobs reached out to Rob Yanov, a middle-aged designer at Regis McKenna Advertising. At that time, many people predicted that the company would fail if they keep the old logo. He was too intelligent and not suitable for portraying him in small sizes. According to Michael Morritz, author of The Little Kingdom: A Private History of Apple Computer, Steve Jobs did believe that the logo could be one of the reasons for the poor sales of Apple I. Intrigued, Rob spent several days looking at apples from different angles from a nearby store. … As a result, the designer came to the conclusion that simplicity is the key to success and drew the logo in the form of a monochrome bitten apple.

Rainbow apple

Jobs liked the idea, but he insisted that the logo be colored, despite all the attempts of the head of the advertising company to dissuade him because of too high costs for printing. By the way, all the attacks of the company's ill-goers, claiming that Yanov borrowed the idea of a colored logo from the well-known rainbow flag, have no basis at all – the symbol of sexual minorities began to be used by the community only in 1979. However, it is believed that it was the similarity of the flags that caused the logo color change in 1998. The bitten apple has become what it was originally intended – monochrome.

“There was also a practical reason for the multi-colored stripes on the first logo: the Apple II was the first personal computer that could display color images on a monitor,” explained Yanov.

Most expensive logo

Steve Jobs was responsible for most of the work on the logo design. The challenge was to print it in several colors next to each other. The four multi-stage color printing technologies known at the time left the risk that the layers might be misaligned and overlapped. Yanov suggested separating the layers with thin black lines. This would solve the problem and make printing cheaper. However, Steve Jobs firmly decided – the logo should be without stripes. For this reason, Michael M. Scott of Apple called it “the most damn expensive logo ever created.”

It is noteworthy that Rob Yanov did not receive a dime for his legendary work. “They didn't even send postcards,” he said in an interview. Steve Jobs developed an excellent relationship with Silicon Valley's chief marketer, and he allowed the growing company to use the services of his subordinates for free.

Apple logo was created in honor of scientist Alan Turing

Few know about Steve Jobs' love for Alan Turing's contribution to science, but the English scientist was indeed the real idol of the eternally living soul of Apple.

Most likely, you have not even heard this name, but it is this brilliant scientist in the scientific community that is considered the father of not only mathematics, but also artificial intelligence.

In 1954, Turing committed suicide by biting an apple, which he himself pumped with cyanide – this is the official version of the cause of his death.

Some believe that mathematics was actually poisoned, but this does not seem plausible, because at that time the scientist was not considered great due to his unconventional sexual orientation.

It was Alan's unconventional inclinations that caused the mystery that hung over the Apple logo. Steve Jobs honored the scientist's memory with the help of a symbolically bitten apple, which he even painted in the rainbow colors of global tolerance, but he could not reveal his tribute to the world for business reasons.

Jobs understood perfectly well that he did not want to create a local company that would work only for the United States and a couple of neighboring countries. He planned to lead a global manufacturer and enter other promising markets that might not be as tolerant as the American one.

For example, Chinese is still considered one of the most desirable markets in the world, and in this country it is against unconventional sexual relations. Russia, Eastern Europe and other countries with their views on life in this matter also cannot be written off.

Precisely out of fear that Apple would be misunderstood, in 1998 the company changed the logo to a less defiant one, and in 1999 came up with an actual neutral version that still remains without a piece.

Jobs' idol is coolly shown in the movie “The Imitation Game”

<img decoding="async" class="SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp" src="https://inform.com.de/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/post-227769-607cc4b46c567.jpg" alt="The history of Apple from the beginning to the present day. Since childhood, he had only mathematics in his head, but his parents tried to develop him comprehensively, so they moved to the UK and sent him to a liberal arts school.

At 13, Turing baffled teachers by solving in his mind the most difficult problems of mathematics, which he had not even been taught. At school, he was considered almost the worst student, and in the testimonial after graduation, the director sarcastically emphasized:

“He will undoubtedly become a real problem in the community.”

At 23, Alan already defended his doctoral dissertation in mathematics, and later developed the theory of logical computing machines, which will become an obligatory part of the curriculum of cybernetics.

The further fate of the mathematician is coolly shown in the film “The Imitation Game”, which won the main award at the Toronto Film Festival in 2014.

The main role was played by Benedict Cumberbatch, whom you know for sure from Holmes's extraordinary image in the TV series “Sherlock” and the superhero role in Doctor Strange.

The film turned out to be quite believable from a historical point of view, and you can still watch it at least because of the cute smile of Keira Knightley, who played Joan Clarke.

<img decoding="async" class="SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp" src="https://inform.com.de/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/post-227769-607cc4b57942e.jpg" alt="The history of Apple from the beginning to the present day. This year, along with other specialists, he was brought in to decipher the messages of the Enigma machine, which the Nazis used to coordinate the actions of the fleet and aviation.

Then Alan was seized by real excitement. At midnight, the code word needed for decryption changed, so he had only 24 hours to solve the problem.

A year later, the mathematician drew attention to the weather information that was in the messages, and she helped create a tool to decipher them.

In 1943, Turing and his team also hacked a more sophisticated version of the Enigma and gained access to the full stream of German information that helped bring victory in the war a couple of years closer and save millions of lives. For this he was awarded the order.

In 1951, Alan took part in the creation of one of the first computers in the world. Then, during the investigation of the crime, the mathematician's orientation was not only revealed, he frankly admitted his orientation.

However, there was enough evidence without it. He offered Turing two sentences to choose from: chemical castration or 2 years in prison. Alan chose the first, and he was given a special injection that turned him into impotent for the rest of his life.

Turing was immediately dismissed from public service, he was banned from teaching at the university. The scientist at the moment lost both his good name and the means of subsistence.

Two years later, due to the lack of hormones on the body, the mathematician could already see the female breast, he was terribly complex, almost never left the house and eventually committed suicide by biting off an apple pumped with potassium cyanide. In such cases, the packaging (box) is white, including the image of the smartphone on the front side.

In Russia, such Apple smartphones are known under the names: “Like new” or “Refurbished”, or “CPO”, their prices are usually 20-30% lower, and the quality does not suffer at all. The manufacturer gives the same one-year warranty as for a new device (M).

Apple has several iPhone replacement programs. It can be exchanged under warranty or with a surcharge. These iPhones are also called replacement iPhones. And in this case, they should be distinguished from the replacement IPhone issued at the service center at the time of repairing your device under warranty. It would be more correct to call it rather a substitute.

These devices are produced along with new phones, and are issued only at the service center. Those. they do not come for sale directly from the factory, but are sent to the ASC, where they are issued in exchange for a guarantee.

The peculiarity of these models is that the warranty of such devices is limited by the remaining warranty of the smartphone delivered to the service center.

Those. if, say, you brought an IPhone under warranty to the service a month later, and you were given a replacement device (N), then its warranty will be already 11 months (the remainder of the warranty of the first smartphone).

At the same time, the replacement IPhone has not been previously used or activated, and the balance of the warranty cannot be determined without its activation.

Accordingly, if you purchase a phone of this type in a store, then the warranty for it is divided into the one that remained in the official Apple service and from the seller's store (in this case, the seller assumes the cost of repairs under a warranty that is not included in the official part). This is, of course, if the store has not agreed with you on other terms.

3 (or another number) – Demo version (demo). Specifications (technical characteristics) of Demo devices are no different from ordinary ones.

As a rule, such devices do not go on sale at all. are not provided to the customer in any form. In the case of a sale, it can be either as a BU, or with a significant discount.

P – personalized (engraved).

When buying an iPad and iPod Touch (less often iPhone) in the Apple online store, the buyer is invited to use a free service for engraving and packing in a gift box.

Next, the phone model itself is encrypted with the amount of memory and color. These data are not so important to us, since we can determine this even without marking.

More important information will be given to us by the letter / letters at the end of the marking before the “/” sign.

They indicate the region (country) of origin. Previously, this could affect the frequencies used in 3G and 4G (LTE) networks, in modern models this is not so important, because all fundamental frequencies are present in all models. Although we recommend checking the model number directly through the phone menu to rule out any inconsistencies (such cases are not uncommon).

To do this, you need to turn on the iPhone, go to “Settings”, find the “General” section, and then go to the “About this device” item.

After you have found the serial number, you can go in two ways:

An easy way to determine the “homeland” of an apple device is to use our service. For twenty years, the Yabloko company produced these computers as the main product, using Motorolla processors and its own Mac operating system.

In the mid-90s, Apple licensed the right to use its own OS to other computer manufacturers, but the licenses were soon revoked.

In 1996, the Yabloko company was on the verge of bankruptcy. The losses amount to over two billion dollars.

In 1997, the founder of Apple, Steve Jobs, returns to Yabloko, after which the company's affairs are taking off. The company begins to master new technologies not related to computers, and already in 2001, the first iPod music player was released.

<img decoding="async" class="SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp" src="https://inform.com.de/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/post-227769-607cc4c4ee1d3.jpg" alt="The history of Apple from the beginning to the present day. The court then satisfied the claim from Nokia, and ordered the Yabloko players to pay compensation.

While the two giants were suing, the light saw the line of gadgets from Samsung Galaxy, like two peas in a pod similar to the iPhone and iPad. Apple filed a lawsuit against Samsung with the wording of “copying software, interface and design” of the aforementioned gadgets, but in response Samsung filed a lawsuit against “Yabloko” with the same wording with which Nokia filed and won in 2009.

The court recognized both companies as violators, satisfied all claims, and ordered to pay compensation to the friend, and also banned the sale of popular gadgets on its territory of both companies (the lawsuits took place in South Korea).

Death of Steve Jobs

In 2011, Steve Jobs died of an incurable disease. Apple has continued its work and is successfully releasing new innovative devices.

The departure and return of Steve Jobs in the 80s

After watching documentaries or films based on the history of Apple in English with translation, you can find out that Steve Jobs left the company in 1983 amid personal crisis and problems. He left the firm for various reasons, including because he could not find a common language with CEO Scully. And speaking to Stanford students in 2005, Jobs announced that he was fired. The reason is that the Macintosh not only did not cause delight, but became a failure. According to one version, Jobs did not leave, but simply took a vacation, remaining the chairman of the board of directors.

Crisis of Ideas and Failure of Leadership

The history of Apple found its place in presentations, movies, books. The beginning of the crisis dates back to 1980, when the Apple III project failed. A year later, Steve Wozniak gets into a car accident, leaves his job for a while, sales drop and Jobs fires 40 employees. Further events develop rapidly:

1983 – Wozniak invites John Scully to the position of CEO;

Scully and Jobs do not find common ground at work;

1984 – Launch of the 32-bit Macintosh computer.

Since 1985, the situation has improved, sales are growing. Ronald Reagan awarded Wozniak and Jobs with medals for the development of technological progress.

The resounding success of gadgets and computers in the 2000s

This period can be safely called the “golden age of the company”, including in the biography of Steve Jobs. In 2001, the iPod players were presented, which became very popular, and after 2 years the iTunes Store online supermarket was opened, and already in 2007 the iPhones saw the world. The iPad was also rapidly gaining popularity. Wozniak was seized with the idea of creating a revolutionary computing device, while Jobs had a commercial housing. It could only be purchased in the form of a designer, the price tag of which reached $ 3 thousand. Entrepreneurs were able to reduce the cost of the device by reducing the number of chips.

Apple I was presented in 1976. Its body looked like a wooden box without a monitor, the processor was MOS 6502 with a frequency of 1 MHz. The RAM was 4 KB. After a successful presentation, the engineers entered into an agreement with the computer store Byte Shop for the supply of 50 pieces of Apple I.

<img decoding="async" class="SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp" src="https://inform.com.de/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/post-227769-607cc4ca292d9.jpg" alt="The history of Apple from the beginning to the present day. Wozniak later explained that this was due to his craving for repeating numbers. By the way, in 2014 one of those 50 Apple I sold was put up for auction. The computer was acquired by the Henry Ford Museum for a large sum – about $ 1 million.

The reason for the demand was not only the price of the device, which was several times cheaper than similar offers. Apple Computer Inc supplied a pre-built computer, unlike its rivals who sell sets of parts.

Big Investors and First Success: Apple II Launched

The development of the next version required a large sum. Colleagues managed to attract a major investor – Mark Markkulu. He invests his own $ 90,000 in the business and provides a $ 250,000 loan from Bank of America. On January 3, 1977, Apple Computer becomes a public company.

During the West Coast Computer Faire, the first personalized computer, the Apple II, is unveiled. The novelty blocked all participants thanks to:

ability to reproduce color picture and sound;

built-in programming language;

connectivity to a color TV;

data entry using a magnetic tape cassette.

<img decoding="async" class="SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp" src="https://inform.com.de/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/post-227769-607cc4cb0ff01.jpg" alt="The history of Apple from the beginning to the present day. For 3 years of release of Apple II, the turnover of the enterprise rose to $ 10 million. The model itself was produced until 1990.

1978 saw the introduction of the 5.25-inch Apple Disk II. Unlike competitors' offers, it was advanced and much cheaper.

Failed development: Apple III and Apple Lisa

In 1980, the company enters the world market, and the staff grows to several thousand people. Together with this, a series of failures ensues.

In May 1980, the Apple III computer was presented, which went on sale in November this year. Depending on the modification, its cost was $ 4500-7800. The price did not meet expectations: the developers did not solve the problem of the case overheating.

Apple III was modernized within 3 years, but it was not possible to repeat the success of the previous model. Its release was suspended at the end of 1983.

For comparison, Apple III was released only 75 thousand copies, Apple II – 1.3 million.

<img decoding="async" class="SDStudio-light-box-enable SDStudio-editor-tools-md-imp" src="https://inform.com.de/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/post-227769-607cc4cc1404c.jpg" alt="The history of Apple from the beginning to the present day. It was powerful, with 1MB of RAM. For the first time, the company began to use a hard disk drive in series, a new Twiggy drive for floppy disks with a capacity of 871 KB and a mouse-type manipulator appeared. At the same time, it did not turn out to be budgetary. Although an IBM personal computer cost an order of magnitude higher: $ 5 thousand versus $ 2.5 thousand for a Macintosh.

In the fall of 1985, Steve Jobs leaves the post of chairman of the board of directors.
