David Lynch was born on January 20, 1946. He spent his childhood in a small town in Montana. David's father is a scientist, worked in the Department of Agriculture. The son did not follow in his footsteps. From childhood, Lynch was attracted by everything unknown and mystical, especially the carcasses of dead animals, which he carefully packed in boxes and examined for a long time. One of his hobbies was composing compositions from dead flies. Otherwise, David Lynch was a normal child – obedient, quiet, he did well at school.<\/p>\n

Growing up, Lynch did not get rid of his hobby. On the contrary, he often visited the local morgue, where he watched with interest how pathologists dissect corpses. He even photographed decaying organs. His second passion was stories about the afterlife. By the way, he believes in its existence even now.<\/p>\n
David Lynch dreamed of becoming an artist, so in 1963 he entered the School of Art in Washington, and after 3 years he transferred to the Academy of Fine Arts in Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n
David acquired his first cinematic experience at the academy. In 1967, he directed the cartoon “6 vomiting figures” – it lasted only 1 minute. In the same year, there was another experiment – the avant-garde film “Alphabet”.<\/p>\n
Lynch began working on his first full-length film in 1972. It was the Eraser Head project. Filming lasted 5 years, but after the premiere, David Lynch became a cult director. He was noticed and offered to cooperate by Mel Brooks. In 1980, Brooks' studio released the film “The Elephant Man”, which was nominated for an Oscar, and won the Grand Prix at the Fantastic Film Festival.<\/p>\n
In 1984, the movie “Dune”, a screen version of the novel of the same name by Frank Herbert, was released. Despite the famous source and the abundance of stars in the cast, the picture flopped at the box office. In 1986, the director's new creation was released – the detective thriller Blue Velvet. The film about a mysterious investigation in a small town won a number of prestigious awards, but Lynch's next film overshadowed the success of this film.<\/p>\n
The directorial triumph for David Lynch was the detective-mystical series “Twin Peaks”, which was released in 1990. The series tells about the investigation of the shocking murder of a high school student, which is gradually overgrown with details that indicate interference in the case of otherworldly forces. After two seasons, the unfinished series was abandoned for more than 25 years. This fact made Twin Peaks even more popular, and the unfinished plot was overgrown with an incredible number of theories explaining what is happening in the picture.<\/p>\n
In the same year, his drama Wild at Heart won the main prize at the Cannes Film Festival. In 1994, viewers saw Lynch's most mysterious film, Lost Highway. A complex plot, perfect editing, mystical music – all the elements acted magically on the audience.<\/p>\n
After the Highway to Nowhere project, Lynch directed A Simple Story, in which there is no mysticism, the plot is simple and somewhat naive. This is a story about an elderly man who travels thousands of kilometers to his brother's home on a small lawn mower. With this work, the director proved that he is capable of not only surreal projects. Alas, society reacted coolly to his experiment – they expected something different from the master.<\/p>\n
Soon David Lynch returned to his favorite style. In 2000, Mulholland Drive was released. This film received two awards for directing – in Toronto and Cannes. The film was originally filmed as a pilot for a new series, but the material was rejected. Lynch completed the missing parts and released Mulholland Drive as a full-length feature film that was warmly received by fans.<\/p>\n

In particular, he uses the technique of mutual correspondence of the content of a frame to a musical line in his short audiovisual works (most often in the industrial style). In the recent film Ant's Head, ants crawl over a head of cheese in the shape of a distorted human face against the backdrop of an urban landscape accompanied by noise jazz. The new short film works with electronic music, to which monochrome little people move monotonously, already in the title it postulates the interpenetration of sound and visual, and the short films, “Head with a Hammer”<\/a> and “Pig Walking”<\/a> give birth to such surreal and baseless images that their origins can be found only in music as in the purest of the arts (Arthur Schopenhauer adhered to this opinion about music), without the admixture of specifics and reality.<\/p>\n Lynch's transition from painting to cinema is due to his curiosity about what kind of pictures moving to sound can be. The director created his first film entirely by hand. There was no narrative in it, but on the other hand, there were characters vomiting colorfully to the sounds of a siren, which no worse holds the viewer's attention than the rich action and plot climaxes. All in all, Lynch's painting is one big plot climax.<\/p>\n The next short film was based on the dream of David's wife's niece. From now on, many of his paintings will directly or indirectly refer to dreams (,, and others), which is why he will often be brought closer to the surrealist direction in cinema and art.<\/p>\n The next early short film fits into this paradigm due to psychoanalytic motives, but also differs from previous works, since it has a full-fledged narrative script. The main character here is a boy who grows up independently of his parents from the earth, which is why he suffers constant humiliation and violence from his father. It occurs to the boy to create a grandmother so that she will protect him from this cruelty. According to the plot, she is born from a nut (this image will still surface in Lynch's “Eraser-Head” in the form of a nut-like planet). However, in the end it turns out that the grandmother is just a figment of the child's imagination, which at some point gets out of control. The boy decides to tell his parents about everything, but in response he hears only ridicule. Ultimately, he just can't stand it and dies.<\/p>\n The noisy soundtrack, characteristic of many of Lynch's subsequent works, appears for the first time, and the deathly pale faces and strange zoomorphic images contain something really surreal or even necro-aesthetic.<\/p>\n Short film “Grandma”<\/p>\n But this film does not exhaust the surreal elements of his short works either. Insects (,,,) appear in many – a symbol of blood, decay, decay, decadence, ephemeral life. Although the action in most of them takes place at night, the light of reason and the “golden glow of the sun” still seeps everywhere. The latter sometimes even plays the role of a central conceptual character – as in.<\/p>\n It is consistent with this that Lynch, by his own admission in the video interview “Do you have a question for David?”, Does not keep a dream diary. This is transcendence<\/a>, a rare property, the ability to go beyond and face what is, in principle, inaccessible to knowledge through experience. It sounds hazy and somewhat trite, but Lynch has a rather slender system and half a century of experience in these dives. He practices transcendental meditation, although this is not entirely about it: it simply allowed him to curb a rather painful innate trait – the talent-curse to instantly find himself on the other side. Any part of the outside world can act as a trigger: ants crawling along the bark of a tree, rotten fruit, paternity, or a naked, beaten woman walking past the Lynch family's lawn.<\/p>\n During his life in Philadelphia, David Lynch once again faced a strange situation in his life. There was a madwoman not far from him, and one day he witnessed how she ran out into the yard on all fours, clucking and shouting “I am a chicken, I am a chicken!” On another occasion, she approached Lynch, pinching her breasts in a frenzy with the words: “My nipples are burning!” She clearly wanted David to help her cope with this, but after such an experience, he already needed help.<\/p>\n Another traumatic experience led directly to the creation of Twin Peaks. David, as usual, drank incredibly sweet coffee in a small cafe. While Lynch was watching the street from the window, the car hit a motorcyclist to death. The police who arrived at the scene packed the body in a plastic bag, just like Laura Palmer. The spectacle of death became a powerful impetus for his imagination and launched a series of fantastic images that developed into what we now know as “Twin Peaks”.<\/p>\n Likewise, the experience of fatherhood, which became painful for David, spawned “Eraser Head.” Lynch, with his characteristic outlook on life, experienced a serious shock from the realization that some part of him had become a separate, alien, but at the same time causing disturbing tenderness, an object that requires responsibility and is able to die at any moment.<\/p>\n But the main advantage of the director is that he is able to convey this traumatic experience extremely convincingly on the screen, whether it is the birth of a freak, as in Eraser Head, or the appearance of a naked and insane woman with a bloody face, as in Blue Velvet. At the first screening of “Eraser”, the potential investor was so imbued with the atmosphere of the film that in primal horror, clutching his head, he fled from the session in the middle of the film, leaving the production without funding.<\/p>\n But traumatic experience, even together with unconditional talent, would not have been enough for Lynch to become thus a completely unique and unlike any director. In addition, there are two more elements in his work: incredible and even painful sensitivity and meditations, which both spur and allow you to control it.<\/p>\n Among Lynch's fans, it is customary to say that he has never used drugs or even drinks or smokes since 1978. In fact, this is not the case. By the age of 70, he had taken up nicotine again and now smoked cigarettes one after another, and in his youth he actively used marijuana. However, he soon had to give up with her, as he turned out to be too sensitive for outside psychoactive influence. Even sober, he was too easily carried away into the darkness of the subconscious or the gloomy world of deliciously creepy fantasies. With cannabis, this trait was only exaggerated.<\/p>\n Therefore, for Lynch, the discovery of transcendental meditation was an extremely important moment in his biography. Now he is promoting it with the help of his foundation and has even managed to introduce meditation courses in many schools in America. To those who know Lynch only from films, it always seems extremely surprising that he himself works only in a state of complete pacification and even euphoria. David, no matter how dark, painful and creepy his worlds may seem, creates only being happy and believes that this is the key to his success.<\/p>\n Isabella Rossellini is the daughter of Ingrid Bergman and director Roberto Rossellini, with whom Lynch had an affair.<\/p>\n In his book Catching a Big Fish,<\/a> Lynch writes about his concept of creativity. Ideas, in his opinion, are peculiar creatures living in the depths of our consciousness, and it is not so easy to catch them. Moreover, the more valuable and larger the idea, the deeper you will have to dive after it and take longer to tinker in order to pull it out. A frustrated and joyless person, concentrated on his misfortunes, will not be able to do this by definition – the “fish” will get off the hook and go deeper and deeper. In this sense, Lynch himself is a gambler, and this is another key to understanding his work.<\/p>\n David Lynch was born into a reference middle-class family in Montana. His father was from a farming family, but managed to become a scientist, and his mother taught English. Both were religious, but without fanaticism, Presbyterians and in David's memory they never quarreled in their entire lives. Childhood promised to be cloudless and happy – parents did everything so that their three children lived in a small paradise of their family comfort. But the idyll behind which lies the world of unknowable otherworldly horror is not in vain one of the main themes of his work.<\/p>\n Once, when little Lynch was walking with his friends and younger brother near the house, they saw a strange sight, a nightmare that somehow managed to break into the reality of a prosperous town. An absolutely naked woman with snow-white skin walked across the lawn towards the children. She was clearly insane, her mouth was covered in blood, and this picture was incredibly traumatic for David.<\/p>\n This picture remained in the subconscious of Lynch.<\/p>\n The family constantly moved – his father often received a referral to a new place of work, and the Lynches roamed the tiny American towns. So, from childhood, he was imbued with the atmosphere of what will then awaken in his imagination the world of Twin Peaks. The more idyllic and picturesque the town, in which everyone knows each other from childhood, the closer to this place will live Lovecraft's “Deep Ones” or worse creatures – like Bob, who was hunted by Agent Cooper.<\/p>\n As if the incident with a naked woman was not enough, little David was prepared for another shock, another traumatic experience that was associated precisely with the move. The day before leaving from one provincial town to another, the Lynches met for the last time with neighbors and friends, and many guests came. The Smith family, who lived in the nearest house, also came to say goodbye.
