What is ASMR and why do many people like it so much?

What it is

ASMR (autonomous sensory meridian response) is a neologism that defines and describes the sensations of tightening and pleasant tingling of the scalp, back and limbs caused by sound, visual, cognitive and other stimuli.

This is what Wikipedia says, and this is echoed by all of the Why I Whisper Into the Microphone video explanations from the ASMR experts on YouTube. They also say that there are many triggers that induce ASMR responses (whispering and low speech, crunching and fingering of objects, wet mouth sounds and breathing, personal attention, and so on), and that many adults have experienced ASMR as a child.

There is no scientific confirmation of the ASMR phenomenon yet, and I would write off ASMR as another anti-scientific rubbish, if not for one thing: I immediately understood what kind of feeling we were talking about. I experienced it while watching that video, and yes, I did experience it as a child during the banal games of girls like daughter-mother. That relaxing scalp tightening is it.

What is it eaten with

ASMR has a huge YouTube community. Not as big as gamers or beauty vloggers, but the top channels have between 200,000 and 500,000 subscribers, and the top videos have millions of views.

You ask: what do all these people find in this?

ASMR helps you relax and fall asleep. The videos are very popular among those who have chronic sleep problems, cannot let go of daytime stress and switch to rest. They often watch videos in bed. Many write that they wake up with headphones in their ears, literally not noticing how they fell asleep.

ASMR is fun. Some people just like to feel tingles – the same tingling sensations on the skin that trigger ASMR videos. It's like taking a light free massage or meditating. And yes, there is ASMR erotica too.

ASMR is a placebo for loneliness. Videos help people who have communication difficulties get a surrogate for communication, and people who feel they are not needed by anyone – a surrogate for attention. Most ASMR video format creates the feeling that the person “on TV” is talking to you, helping you, taking care of you. Many people like this, and this is not only about chronic social anxiety. Suddenly you have a bad day, you are sad or lonely, and calling someone in the middle of the night is somehow not in your hands. That's when ASMR video can come in handy.

What's on the menu

All ASMR videos can be roughly divided into two broad categories: trigger videos and role-playing videos.

Trigger videos are videos filled with clean triggers. For example, a video where the presenter or presenter whispers something inarticulate into the microphone for 20 minutes, or fingering grains with their fingers, or driving their nails along the velvet, or performing any of hundreds of manipulations that cause an ASMR response. Many popular ASMR bloggers have a Find Your Trigger video where they mix the most common triggers so the viewer can find the right ones.

Role-playing videos are similar to what I showed above. There are triggers here too, but they are part of the story. Favorite subjects: a visit to a beauty salon (for a haircut, a beautician), a visit to a store, a visit to a doctor. You are almost always rendered some kind of service, they take care of you, surround you with attention.

Many such videos will seem silly and ridiculous, and in order to enjoy them, you need to include so-called faith in the proposed circumstances (from the English suspension of disbelief, literally “postponing disbelief”). This is when, sitting in a movie, you accept as a fact that a scientist can make a flying suit out of scrap metal in a week. When you believe in what is happening, even if it is illogical, to get the buzz you came for.

Not all role-playing videos are created equal. Some authors offer stories and circumstances that are simply ridiculous, like a video about making a deposit at a bank at 40% per annum (I'm not kidding). Some depict a visit to a beauty salon, although it is obvious that this is happening in their dark, untidy bedroom. In general, the enjoyment of role-playing videos is a two-way job. The viewer's task is to believe, the author's task is to make it believe. Personally, I have my favorite role-playing videos, and triggers work better in them than in their pure form.

Life Hacks and Tips for Better ASMR

Headphones. Literate ASMR professionals use binaural microphones. This is especially noticeable in role-playing videos, when, say, the “hairdresser” walks around you (actually around the microphone, of course) and speaks – it seems as if the voice is really floating around your head, which in itself works as a trigger. Therefore – only headphones. With columns, the effect is not at all the same.

If your goal is to fall asleep, watching an ASMR video can work to its detriment: the light of the screen excites the nervous system and interrupts the production of melatonin. An alternative is to sacrifice the video sequence, extract sound from your favorite ASMR videos (here, for example) and listen to them before bed.

Many people do not experience the characteristic tingling sensation when watching ASMR videos, but they still watch them for the calming effect. Perhaps you are one of those.

Most of the quality ASMR content is in English, but don't let that confuse you, even if you don't know the language. Firstly, in a trigger video it doesn't matter at all, they don't speak there. And the plot of role-playing videos is so simple that sounds and visuals alone may be enough for you. In addition, many ASMR lovers say that it is even easier for them to get the desired effect when they do not fully understand the speaker's speech or it is speech with a noticeable accent (see Maria GentleWhispering above and below, American fans also love her for her accent).

What is ASMR video?

The huge amount of ASMR content on social networks has generated interest in this phenomenon. The videos are designed for a wide audience, they use a variety of audiovisual stimuli – each one has something different, and what causes one person to be blissful may leave another indifferent.

The most common reaction is a whisper. Some react to crunching or rustling, soft slow movements, or role-playing games in which the author of the video, for example, depicts giving the viewer a head massage.

Craig Richard, professor at the Department of Biopharmaceuticals at Shenandoah University, USA, wrote the book Tingling in the Head, which has become a kind of guide to ASMR.

The professor recalls that he himself first experienced these sensations in childhood, watching the TV show “The Joy of Painting” with Bob Ross. “When I listened to the presenter, my brain seemed to be clouded – it was a very pleasant feeling of relaxation,” Richard recalls. Many connoisseurs of ASMR say that Ross's soft voice and the sound of the artist's brush moving across the canvas gave them similar sensations.

Nitin Akhuja, a gastroenterologist and assistant professor of clinical medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, is exploring a new subgenre of ASMR – videos that play doctors with viewers. They depict a wide variety of examinations – from eye examinations by an ophthalmologist to unconventional treatments such as Reiki. “A reasonable question arises – can imitation of care or medical assistance bring real health benefits?” – Akhuja asks.

ASMR: truth or fiction?

It is still unknown what percentage of the population is susceptible to ASMR, because large studies of this phenomenon have not yet been carried out. Scientists also failed to create a “portrait” of the average connoisseur of ASMR. “The study of it as a phenomenon is still in its infancy: only 10 studies have been published,” explains Craig Richard.

The first professional study of the effects of ASMR on psyche and mood was published in 2018. Scientists found that watching such videos did cause a pleasant feeling for the subjects, but only for those who themselves declared their susceptibility to such stimuli. In this group, watching the corresponding videos reduced the heart rate by an average of three beats per minute, in the control group this effect was not found.

Craig Richard and his colleagues conducted another experiment: they scanned the brains of subjects while watching a video. It turned out that when a tingling sensation occurs in the head, the same areas of the brain are activated, which are “turned on” when we are cared for or when we communicate with a loved one.

What causes ASMR sensations?

Why do these unusual and pleasant sensations arise, and why are only some of us receptive to them? Perhaps the brain produces “hormones of joy”? Or are some ancient reactions of pleasure, “stitched” in our nervous system, included?

“Research has not yet provided any physiological explanation for ASMR. But many people do experience pleasant sensations – it means that there is something in it. At worst, it's just a placebo effect. Why not try watching some videos and see how you will react? ” – Nitin Akhuja offers.

What Science Says

There is no scientific consensus on ASMR. Scientists still do not know what exactly triggers this response to stimuli, and why some people feel it and others do not. It is believed that the perception of this phenomenon among specialists is similar to the attitude to migraine. In both cases, the phenomenon is recognized not because the causal relationships necessary to prove it have been found, but because a large number of people independently described it in detail. But comparative studies of the brains of people with different responses to ASMR-stimuli are already underway in the hope of uncovering the secret of this phenomenon.
So far, we can only talk about some of the facts that the scientific community has already learned about this phenomenon. Many people compare the process of watching ASMR videos to animal grooming. Individuals of some species help each other with hygiene not in order to become cleaner, but in order to develop trusting relationships. In this context, the act of smoothing the hair helps to induce a sense of a safe environment and is subsequently associated in animals with a sense of calmness. fMRI analysis of the brains of people experiencing the ASMR effect has shown that during the reaction, zones are activated that may be associated with grooming and similar behaviors.
The similarities between ASMR and synesthesia and frisson, the pleasant shudder caused by audiovisual stimuli, are also noticed. ASMR resembles a type of synesthesia that allows subjects to register tactile sensations when listening to certain sounds. Frisson is most often experienced when listening to music. Sometimes the pleasure of listening to music is so great that the hairs on the arms “stand on end” and tremors go through the body. This is also comparable to the sensations described by ASMR-sensitive people.

Photo by Tim Foster / Unsplash
Experts say that the main component of ASMR is the formation of an intimate sound environment. Research even shows that ASMR content helps patients suffering from depression and chronic pain. It slows down the heartbeat and people feel relaxed.

Why are ASMR videos so popular?

Modern man is an extremely nervous and tense creature. This is especially true for men living in large cities (by the way, this is the reason why the overwhelming majority of ASMR workers are young girls). In the daily cycle of affairs with constantly accumulating stress, it is difficult even to just relax to gain new strength. This leads to the abuse of alcohol, drugs, sleep disturbances, constant irritability, aggravated in March and November, inability to control emotions and other unpleasant consequences.

Videos of this format are the fastest and cheapest way to relax without visiting chiropractors or psychologists. Aside from the chronic shifts in the psyche, all that most stressful people need is to simply relax and enjoy the pleasant sensations.

Given the popularity of such bloggers, the problem is acute. Of course, they will not solve serious psychological problems, but they can help many in need. This is much more useful than, for example, an e-sportsman demonstrating incredible skills in some kind of online shooter.

Audience of ASMR channels

Both men and women watch ASMR videos. As statistics show, the main target audience is people under the age of twenty-five. It is necessary to focus on their needs when developing a content plan.

So, if you are betting on young men, it makes sense to shoot videos about computer equipment and gadgets. It can be a banal unpacking of a purchase, or a full video review. Having achieved a large number of views, you can make money on YouTube affiliate programs and online stores. It will also be possible to search for direct advertisers, offering them the shooting of ASMR reviews of new products in the assortment.

You can also stream in ASMR format.

What else do men like? Tapping (this is when the author of the video taps his fingers on any surface) on the skin. It makes sense to shoot a video about leather goods (bags, phone cases, handmade shoes), at the same time advertising the manufacturer. Men also like role-playing games about massage parlors, fashionable haircuts, shaving a beard.

Girls are delighted with everything that is associated with beauty: makeup, manicure, pedicure, going to the hairdresser, unpacking perfume boxes, reviews of orders from cosmetics stores. You can shoot both role-playing games and visual triggers. Here, too, there are huge opportunities for making money on the channel: from affiliate programs to outright advertising of products. By the way, no matter how intrusive she is, the ASMR effect smooths her presence. Therefore, everything that you tell in the video will not be perceived as negatively as, for example, advertising on television.

Of course, you should not limit yourself to the above. Maybe it's you who will be able to come up with something new, something that will hook every subscriber of your channel. Therefore, try yourself in different directions, connect your friends to the filming and analyze the responses of the audience.

ASMR video creation

The duration of the majority of ASMR videos does not exceed thirty minutes. But if you think that this is how much time you will spend on creating a masterpiece, then you are deeply mistaken.

On average, it takes at least three days to shoot one video. The author of ASMR records about twelve hours of video for each new video. This leaves thirty to sixty minutes at the end. Everything else is cut out due to the presence of extraneous sounds, broken speech, poor recording quality due to improperly selected effects on the microphone.

In order for the video to be interesting, you need to write a script. This also takes a lot of time and effort. If you tell what comes to your mind, the video is doomed to fail. So take the time to write a speech, learn it, and practice without a camera.

When it comes to visual triggers and role-playing games, you should think over your costume, accessories, makeup (for girls), background, correctly calculate the distance from the microphone to the sound source (for this you will have to try dozens of placement options).

You will not be able to record an ASMR video using a conventional microphone, which is suitable for most standard videos. Only an oversensitive technique that costs a lot will do. By the way, you will have to work on the recordings at night, since during the day there are always extraneous noises in the background.

What are ASMR videos?

Pleasant communication, personal stories, good night wishes – such things bring the blogger closer to the audience, and watching ASMR videos for someone turns into a ritual before bedtime. According to Maria, she keeps in touch with her subscribers online. Viewers send her videos and tell her stories from life.

The YouTube channel has replaced the girl's job. Shooting one video takes from six to twenty hours: you need to test the sounds that will be used in the video, write a script. If in the first videos the presenter used a smartphone to record sounds, over time the collection of her instruments was replenished with professional models of cameras.

To record video, ASMR bloggers use surround-sound microphones to enhance the illusion of presence.

In the US, ASMR has become a part of popular culture, and the variety of content has led to the emergence of new genres. There are no voice, food videos with breaded onion rings tasting, or entertaining. In one of these, a tattooed transvestite whispers messages from haters and fans, crunches chips and bangs on a microphone with golden grills – fake dental plates popular in hip-hop culture.

An equally curious format is a role-playing game. In such videos, bloggers act out scenes from life, for example, an appointment with a doctor, a visit to a makeup artist, or interrogation by an investigator. The presenter may ask you to measure the temperature, get a stethoscope or a whip.It all depends on the blogger's imagination, limited only by his moral boundaries and YouTube rules.

How does science explain the ASMR phenomenon?

Official science towards ASMR is still skeptical, but the authors of the first scientific study on this phenomenon found that among the viewers of ASMR videos there are many people who such content helps to calm down, relax or fall asleep.

There is little research in the field of ASMR yet, but scientists, for example, have already tried to find out how the brain of a person experiencing the ASMR effect works. Comparing brain activity in a calm state and while listening to sounds, the researchers found that in both cases, different parts of the brain were activated.

Also, the researchers note that viewers are not watching ASMR videos for sexual arousal. According to the survey, just five percent of respondents think they are turned on by ASMR video. In fact, it all depends on the blogger and the individual motives of the viewer. Let's say some presenters use their appearance to attract the audience, dress provocatively, or imitate the sounds of physical contact.

There is an opinion that the sensations called ASMR have been known to humans for a long time and lie in the field of individual characteristics of the organism. Science does not yet explain why monotonous sounds cause pleasant tingling sensations in some people and do not affect others in any way. ASMR research also complicates uncomfortable conditions: it is difficult for a person to relax with sensors attached to him and the MRI scanner makes a distracting noise.

ASMR triggers: whisper, personal attention and hugs on the other side of the screen

If you've never heard of autonomous sensory meridional response, it doesn't mean you haven't experienced it. Remember how a light breath of breeze, a hairdresser's touch of your hair, a feather stroking your skin or a gentle song evoked positive emotions and a pleasant physical feeling of “goosebumps” on your neck, back and limbs. This response of the body to tactile, visual or auditory triggers (short stimuli) is ASMR.

By the way, “goose bumps” appear when “hair is on end” – scientifically, this reflex is called piloerection. It is needed to keep warm or to give the silhouette more volume, for example, to frighten the enemy or attract the female. But for a person, this reaction has already lost its meaning – the hairline has become very rare and short, therefore piloerection is considered a rudimentary reflex, an echo from distant ancestors.

However, lovers of the autonomous sensory meridional reaction will not agree that for a person the feeling of “goosebumps” is a useless relic of the past, because they have found use for it … As mentioned above, videos for stimulating ASMR have taken a significant place in relaxation and anti-stress culture as an antidepressant, a remedy for insomnia, anxiety, boredom and loneliness. Video bloggers create videos in which different triggers are “tickled”:

Auditory

Whispering, chomping, crunching and other sounds from the mouth;

Rustling, tapping, crackling and other sounds made by hands or auxiliary objects.

Visual

Smooth hand movements, often imitate hugs, stroking the viewer on the head, face;

Monotonous action that attracts attention – drawing, massage, pouring sand, crushing plasticine or anti-stress toys, foaming soap, etc.

Personal attention

The so-called “chatters”, “talkers”. Emphasis is placed on the “conversation” with the viewer, the manifestation of a keen interest in him, which is expressed in words, intonations, lisping, a keen understanding look “in the eyes”, and the same “hugs” at the camera;

Artists play the role (doctor, make-up artist, hairdresser) and build a “dialogue” with the viewer in a quiet, flowing tone so that he feels that he is being given maximum attention and care.

Mixed

They pet and scratch animals, eat, crush soap on the camera, open packages and do massage (high-sensitivity microphones are attached to the wrists).

Why do video bloggers cut soap, crunch and whisper into the microphone

To create an attractive picture, you need a high-quality camera, competent lighting, themed decorations, professional makeup, video processing programs and a number of other tools. However, in the ASMR video genre, as a rule, the image is secondary, the main emphasis is on sounds. This means that the shooting equipment needs to be replenished with special microphones and headphones, to ensure sound insulation during recording.

A number of requirements for the ASMR artist (presenter of the video) – pleasant appearance and voice, a sense of tact, taste and aesthetics, inner charisma, mastery of facial expressions and gestures, artistry, the ability to sincerely express empathy, care, playfulness … ideas, thinking through the plot, writing a script and, in fact, the very process of shooting and editing.

Thus, on closer inspection, the creation of high-quality “goosebumps” brayngasm videos is a laborious and expensive task. For what? It's simple: 1) for fun, like any other hobby; 2) for monetization, that is, it gives the main or additional income.

In an interview, many YouTube bloggers admit: they initially started creating anti-stress videos simply because they liked the process itself – trendy, unusual, creative, exciting and even meditative … with ASMR content. After all, this gives not only pleasure, but also income – from advertising and voluntary contributions from subscribers.

In addition to the moral and financial side, ASMR artists have a number of pleasant bonuses:

Self-realization as an actor, screenwriter, editor, decorator, psychologist;

Realization of the internal need to take care of someone, take care of, make another pleasant, help, become a friend;

New friends, like-minded people and even business proposals appear (some are invited to work as presenters or advertise brands);

Self-promotion, fame, popularity, satisfaction of self-importance.

Sources used and useful links on the topic: https://Lifehacker.ru/asmr/ https://www.psychologies.ru/articles/chto-takoe-asmr-i-pochemu-mnogim-eto-tak-nravitsya/ https: //habr.com/ru/company/audiomania/blog/462845/ https://HowYoutube.ru/help/chto-takoe-asmr-na-jutube https://www.vasyaznaet.ru/zarabotok/asmr-video -novoe-napravlenie-v-youtube https://informburo.kz/stati/asmr-chto-eto-takoe-i-pri-chyom-tut-orgazm-mozga.html https://kolesogizni.com/tendentsii/chto -takoe-asmr-video

Post source: lastici.ru

ASMR is not only weird but useful.
